• Modularity: No

 • Production: Limited

 • Material: electronics, shield emitters, L.K. ONN, Ultrachrome
SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Point of Impact shielding design can be activated

 • Layered shields

 • Automated Systems

 • The ability to redirect energy to reinforce the shields at the point of impact of enemy weapons fire.

 • An assortment of small overlapping shield generator’s spread across the surface of the ship rather than a few large shield generators allowing for a setup that is able to shift and adjust to the circumstances the ship finds itself under.
Strengths:

 • Ultrachrome Power Cables: In order to enable the point of impact shielding to react in a fast effective manner the engineers at Locke and Key constructed the power cables feeding the varied shield emitters spread across the surface of the ship. The superconductive capability of the ultrachrome lets the system shunt energy around the ship’s shield emitters as needed at a moment’s notice.

 • LK ONN: The problem with the original Phalanx Shield System was the time between sensors detecting an attack and the ability of the system to respond. The LK O.N.N. was the answer to this, an optical neural network it was a distributed processor that allowed the system to react faster. Rather than feeding information back to a processor before being analyzed the processing can start immediately as the sensors pick up an attack, reducing the time required to react and generate shield.

 • Point of impact if needed: Thanks to spread sensors and the decentralized processing of the LK O.N.N. allows the Phalanx Testudo to activate a point of impact shielding system. The system is able to detect and generate shields to cover an impact allowing for a more efficient use of energy and the shielding system. However, if needed the shield system is capable of creating a complete shield around the ship if the situation calls for it.

 • Directable Shields: Able to redistribute shield energy around a ship.
Weaknesses:

 • Neural Network: With much of the processing offloaded to the neural network the system is highly automated. The neural network can be damaged which will force an increase in the time required by the system to respond.

 • Vulnerable to damage: Because the shield emitters are scattered across the hull of the ship they are more vulnerable to suffering major damage when the hull takes any damage. Rather than the standard system where a hit on the shield emitters is needed to take down the shields hull damage now is likely to hit one or more of the small emitters, creating weaknesses in the shield system until the ship can be repaired and new emitters can be installed.

 • Size: The Phalanx System is most effective on a larger ship, and cannot be used on fighters or any ship smaller than 100m in length. The larger the ship, the more effective the system.
DESCRIPTION

The Phalanx Testudo was the evolution of Locke and Key Mechanics Phalanx shield system. The original Phalanx was designed as a means of diverting shield energy around a ship quickly and efficiently to reinforce shields under attack by drawing power from other shields, it was through an innovative system of miniaturised shield emitters that the shield was able to achieve this effect.

The Testudo was the ultimate evolution of this concept, taking the miniaturised shield emitter concept to it’s final form. IF you could create a shield from these miniaturised emitters, why not make several shields using this concept? Once they had asked this question the answer was obvious to the engineers who set about their task with gusto.

The concept they created was similar to laminate armour, to use a composite of specialised shields to counter specific attacks rather than using one generic shield to cover all possibilities.

The most common shield, and therefore the primary form of attack the Testudo had to guard against was energy weapons, ranging from Turbolasers to Ion weapons, all the way up to the solar ionization cannon. These were the weapons that primarily decorated the battlefield. There was only ever one choice as a primary counter to these energy weapons that decorated the heavens, the Molecular Shield. Able to absorb energy attacks, even those that could commonly penetrate standard deflector shields.

While the Molecular shields provided the primary defence against the common energy weapons, Locke and Key mechanics didn’t want to create a shield system which was only capable of handling energy weapons. To prevent this they included their Duban Shield behind the Molecular shield, providing protection against both charged particle, plasma and kinetic weapons. The Testudo was also able to alleviate the Duben’s largest weakness, it’s effect as a Faraday cage. Where a full Duban shield made external communications very difficult, the point of impact system meant there would never need to be a shield deployed around the ship or station using the shield, but rather the shield could be activated when and as needed.

While the Molecular Shield and the Duben shields provided a specialist means to counter threats sometimes they’re not enough for the job, sometimes they can be taken down, and when that happens the Phalanx Testudo comes equipped with redundant deflector shields, both Ray and Particle shields which can be deployed in the event they’re needed. Aside from combat shields the system also contains the basic shields needed for interplanetary travel, magnetogravitic shields and relativistic shields.
