Private Perfume of Red Sand

“The Gilded Ghost”

Sinya felt herself unraveling beneath the Princess’s attention. Every lingering look. Every measured touch. Every subtle display of authority wrapped in silk and perfume.

The original purpose of the visit—routes, influence, profit, expansion (no matter how faked on Sinya’s part)—was becoming increasingly difficult to hold onto beneath the intoxicating weight of Irulan’s presence. Logic kept trying to surface only to dissolve again beneath warmth and desire and that maddeningly controlled voice.

When Irulan stepped close again, Sinya inhaled softly, almost greedily now. The hand beneath her chin held her with deceptive gentleness, and she found herself leaning into it before she could stop herself. Then came the question.

I think you would follow just more than my recommendations yes? Stars. Sinya wanted to say yes immediately. Completely. The answer burned at the back of her throat with humiliating eagerness. Instead she managed only a faint smile and a small nod at first, buying herself precious seconds to regain enough composure to form actual words. Which became significantly harder once Irulan’s thumb pressed against her lips.

Sinya’s breath caught. The slow slide into her mouth made her eyes flutter briefly, and at first she tasted cautiously, almost shyly despite herself. Then instinct overtook hesitation. Her lips closed more fully around the offered thumb, sucking lightly while her gaze remained fixed helplessly on the Princess.

The perfume still lingered around them, sweet and euphoric, dulling resistance and making every second of contact feel warmer than it should have. Irulan’s whisper against her ear nearly shattered what little restraint remained. Perhaps you have found something more desirable than just business.

Sinya let out a shaky breath. “Yes…” she admitted softly at last. The word came quieter than expected. Honest.

Her eyes lifted to Irulan again, desire visible there now beneath the polished composure. “I don’t want to be thought of as a servant.” There was vulnerability in that confession. Rare. Uncomfortable. Real. “I would rather be a partner.”

A small pause. Then her voice lowered further. “But I want far more than business from you, Princess.” The admission sent heat rushing through her chest even as she continued. “And right now…” another soft inhale, “I think I would follow nearly anything you told me to.”

The words had barely left her before Irulan pulled away again. Another almost pained sound escaped Sinya’s throat at the loss of contact. Cruel woman.

She watched the Princess go with open hunger now, eyes following every sway of movement while trying—and failing—to remember why she had intended to maintain any emotional distance at all.

Then Irulan disappeared through the guarded doorway. Sinya slowed as she approached the hall, finally noticing the Royal Guards more directly now that they framed the entrance like living statues. Armed. Alert. Dangerous. The sort of soldiers who would likely kill first and apologize never.

Her gaze shifted toward the slightly open door. Left ajar. Not forgotten. An invitation. Sinya’s pulse quickened. There was still enough sense left in her to recognize that crossing this threshold meant stepping into a far more personal game than trade negotiations. The smarter choice would have been caution.

Instead she moved forward anyway. Close enough now that intervention from the guards was a very real possibility if they judged her unwelcome. But she trusted the invitation. Or perhaps she simply trusted Irulan. Which was somehow even more dangerous. Without another word, Sinya slipped through the partially opened doorway after the Princess.
