Faction Paths Forward (P2I3) - [New Jedi Praxeum]

MIuetyz.png

Morning light spilled through the windows of Katarine Ryiah's office at the New Jedi Praxeum on Chalacta. Beyond the open door, the school was beginning to stir. Footsteps passed in the corridor, accompanied by quiet conversation and the occasional hurried apology from someone already running late.

Katarine glanced at the schedule on her datapad and took a deliberate sip of tea.

It was going to be a long day.

She had set aside time to meet with every member of the Praxeum, from its newest arrivals to those who helped keep the school running. There were lessons to arrange and responsibilities to discuss, certainly, but she hoped their conversations would go further than that. She wanted to know what had brought each of them here, what they hoped to learn, and where they imagined their paths might lead.

Some would have some answers ready; others she would have to find, but she wanted to help each member today. Katarine had spent enough years following her own uncertain path to have patience for both types of questions. She set the datapad aside before she could begin rearranging the appointments again. On the desk sat a fresh pot of tea and a small plate of pastries she had brought up from the kitchens. She moved the plate closer to the chair opposite hers, then regarded it for a moment before taking one herself. At least the first meeting would not begin before she managed to forget breakfast.

For all her preparations, she knew there would be things no schedule could account for. Someone might need encouragement. Someone else might have a concern they had been reluctant to raise. If she wanted them to speak freely, she would have to give them room, and listen when their answers differed from what she expected.

At the sound of someone approaching, Katarine looked up. A welcoming smile softened her expression, and she gestured toward the empty chair.

"Come in. Help yourself to some tea, if you'd like."

She settled back, giving her visitor a moment to get comfortable.

"I'd like to hear how things have been going for you. Then perhaps we can talk about what you're hoping comes next, and how the Praxeum can help you get there."

LIFE BEGINS ANEW

OBJECTIVE: RETURNING TO WHAT IS KNOWN

The Republic, the one that once was, has fallen and a new Republic has emerged, the New Republic, the one that we now live in, and the one that we, Jedi, swore to protect and serve. The Jedi Order, the one that once was, has fallen and a new Order has emerged, the New Jedi Order, the one that we now live in, and the one that we, Jedi, swore to protect and serve. The Jedi Temple, the one that once was, has fallen and a new Temple has emerged, the New Jedi Temple, the one that we now live and serve in, and the one that we, Jedi, swore to protect and serve. Such is the life of a Jedi, never quite able to rest on his laurels, never quite able to rest on his accomplishments, never quite able to rest at all.

Such is the life of service.

"Pardon me, Padawan. Where are the Temple guards?"

The child did not know what a "guard" was, but he knew that a "padawan" was a Jedi, and that a "Jedi" was, that was a start. "Where may I go to acclimate myself to this?"

The child pointed me in the right direction. Such a lackadaisical lifestyle. This is not the Republic I once knew, not the life I knew, but by the Force, it is the life I choose to live, the life I have sworn to protect and serve. Such is the life of a Jedi,

Such is the life of service.

Tessari Keln had arrived seven minutes early. That had been deliberate. Arriving late would have been disrespectful, but arriving too early might have inconvenienced Master Ryiah. Seven minutes seemed like a reasonable compromise, although Tessari had spent four of them standing outside the office wondering whether she ought to announce herself. She had also spent a considerable amount of time preparing for this meeting.

Her robes were freshly cleaned, her gloves properly fitted, and the nearly invisible apparatus surrounding her head had been inspected twice before she left her quarters. She had considered wearing her full isolation suit, but ultimately decided against it. This was supposed to be a conversation with a Jedi Master, not an excursion into an unfamiliar environment. Surely she could manage something as ordinary as sitting in an office. Probably.

When the appointed time finally arrived, Tessari gently pressed the door chime. "Master Ryiah? It's Tessari Keln. I have an appointment?" The final word came out sounding more like a question than she had intended.

Upon being welcomed inside, the young Kuranu stepped through the doorway with a polite smile. Her pale blue eyes took in the room almost immediately. Not in search of anything particularly interesting, unfortunately, but rather in the habitual assessment of her surroundings that had become second nature over eighteen years. The furniture appeared clean. The office seemed well maintained. There were refreshments, which was thoughtful, although the pastries were sitting out in the open. She tried not to think about that last part.

"Thank you for seeing me, Master Ryiah." Her gaze briefly returned to the refreshments. "And for the hospitality. That was very kind of you." She offered another small smile, hoping that adequately conveyed her appreciation without obligating her to actually eat anything.

Tessari approached the indicated chair and hesitated for the briefest moment before sitting. She carefully arranged her robes beneath her, keeping her gloved hands folded together in her lap. The entire process was probably more deliberate than necessary, but she was trying very hard to make a good impression. It wasn't that she expected to be in trouble. At least, she didn't think she was in trouble. The invitation had sounded perfectly friendly.

Nevertheless, being summoned to speak privately with one of the Praxeum's senior Jedi had prompted Tessari to spend much of the previous evening reviewing her recent experiences. There had been the training exercises, her interactions with other students, and a few situations she suspected she might have handled better. Particularly the ones involving things other people had touched.

"I've been enjoying my time here," she volunteered, perhaps a little too quickly. "Everyone has been very welcoming. And the facilities are wonderful. There are quite a few things I'm still getting used to, of course, but I suppose that's normal when you're somewhere new." Her fingers shifted against one another. "I've never lived anywhere quite like this before."

That was certainly an understatement. The station where she had grown up had been orderly, predictable, and designed around precautions that nobody had ever thought to question. The Praxeum was something else entirely. People wandered freely between rooms, gathered in groups, shared equipment, and occasionally touched one another without any apparent concern. It was fascinating. And horrifying. Sometimes both at once.

Still, Tessari had come here because she wanted to learn. She wanted to become a Jedi, and she understood that becoming one would involve more than studying ancient teachings or practicing with a lightsaber in carefully controlled surroundings. She simply hadn't anticipated how many challenges would arise before she even reached the difficult parts.

The young Padawan glanced up at Katarine, a slightly sheepish smile crossing her features. "I did try to think of what I should say today. I even made a few notes, but then I thought perhaps bringing a list of everything I've been doing would make this feel more like an examination." A quiet, nervous laugh escaped her. "And I don't think that's what you intended, is it, Master?"

She settled back a fraction, waiting for Katarine's response. There were certainly things she wanted to discuss, and perhaps a few she needed to discuss, but Tessari wasn't quite ready to begin listing all her difficulties to someone she was still getting to know. For now, she was simply relieved that she had managed to make it into the office and sit down without embarrassing herself. A perfectly respectable beginning, all things considered.

Katarine was in her office, waiting for anybody to approach who wanted to discuss things. Perhaps a formation of a temple guard? She would be glad to help guide and form this new avenue if it was brought to her attention.

"Master Ryiah? It's Tessari Keln. I have an appointment?"

Katarine smiled as the young woman entered her office. "Welcome Tessari. You are right on time." She could hear the nervousness in the woman's voice so she tried to put on a gentle and relaxing smile as the girl settled herself and explained that she was enjoying life as the Praxeum. Katarine was happy to hear that.

Katarine chuckled. "No, there are no examinations today. I simply want to meet with you and get to know you. I want to know what type of Jedi you want to become so I know how I can help you reach those dreams. We can discuss whatever you want during this meeting."

Apparently there is no “Grandmaster”, which is odd to me, but I don’t have time to dwell on it right now. The most important thing is that I am here, back in Chalacta, and that I have returned to the Praxeum, my home … from my time. There is a need for me to be here, and I feel it in my bones, in my heart, in every fiber of my being. These Padawans, many of the younglings, they need protection to be who they are, need guidance from someone who has been through what they are going through. I need to be here for them. A youngling asked me if I wanted to meet “Master Ryiah” her door was open and she was speaking to another.

"I will wait my turn and not interrupt."

The young one looked up to me with surprise in her eyes. Are there that many children here? Is my time truly gone? "Fear not young one."

The life of a Jedi is not an easy one, but it is a life worth living and one that is worth protecting for the future of the galaxy. I am not sure what the future will bring, but I know that I have a role to play in it, and I will do my best to fulfill that role to the best of my abilities.

She knows my name? This is the first thing that goes through my mind as I walk through the door of the Jedi Praxeum into the woman’s office. This is concerning. If there is that level of lax security in the Praxeum, I need to bring it to the attention of my superiors as soon as possible, but I will wait until we are done with this interview to do so. I stand by the chair in front of her desk and wait for her to acknowledge me further.

"My mind is closed, my arrival, unannounced, yet you know my name. Curious."

Standing a little more rigid. "Apologies as I do not know yours."

There is a need for security in the Praxeum again. If the young ones are to be safe then there needs to be a watch again. I will be a part of that watch.

Tessari visibly relaxed when Katarine confirmed that there would be no examinations. That was reassuring, although the question of what sort of Jedi she wanted to become was considerably more difficult than anything she might have encountered on a written test.

"Oh, good. I mean, not that I would mind an examination. I've always done rather well with those." She offered a sheepish smile before considering the Master's question. Her gloved fingers fidgeted together in her lap. "I suppose I haven't really thought about what type of Jedi I want to become. I've always been interested in learning about the Force, and I want to help people. That's what Jedi are supposed to do, isn't it?"

She paused, realizing that was probably an overly simplistic answer. "I enjoy studying, and I'm quite good with technology. I thought perhaps those skills might be useful. But I don't want to spend my entire life sitting behind a desk, either." Her pale blue eyes drifted briefly toward the protective gloves covering her hands. "Although I suppose there are some things I need to get better at before I'm ready to go out into the galaxy and help anyone."

She looked back at Katarine, her expression somewhere between embarrassment and determination. "Did you always know what sort of Jedi you wanted to be, Master Ryiah? Or is that something you figured out along the way?"
