A little more bulk in the "neck" due to addition of protective pylons. Sorry, Can't photoshop very well.)

Fast, Manoeuverable, and well armed.

Larger and marginally stronger than its predecessor

Weaknesses:

If shields are compromised, the long, thinnish "neck" of the ship is a tempting target, potentially bisecting the ship.

Expense.

Description: The Nova-Class Battle Cruiser was a successful design, although its size and function made it more of a frigate than a true cruiser class warship. It was known to be fast, well-armed, and routinely used for border security patrols during Hapan isolation. In wartime, it was commonly used to support the fearsome Battle Dragon. Overall, little has changed with the next generation of this venerable design apart from addressing known issues and adding to the original concept.

The changes that were implemented were superfluous, for the most part, and allowed for the addition of weapon emplacements as well as the rearrangement of existing hardpoints. Further, the retractable bridge armour concept was retained and extended to the known vulnerability of the long, skinny "neck" of the ship which connected fore and aft. Even with redundant shield layering, the risk of rather easily crippling one of these frigates was recognised. Using the concept of retractable bridge armour, a set of retractable pylons was built into the length of the vessel upon which were mounted the defensive point-defense lasers. When extended, these "battle blades", as they are called, add an extra layer of protection to the most vulnerable point of the ship against fighter assaults while also widening the PDLs' area of coverage. Despite this effort, however, the additional coverage isn't perfect and it is known that, while less likely to occur, the point at which the "neck" meets the bridge can still be severely damaged with a well-placed direct turbolaser blast or a high-end concussion missile. Paragon noted this, but ultimately the design passed scrutiny by the Ministry of Defense as an acceptable risk, the odds considered.

Another superfluous, but noticeable change was the extension of the distinctive "wing" structures unique to the Nova-Class design. Classically, the Nova had an inverted "V" shaped structure at the rear where the power core, main shield generator, hangar bay, and engines were. The new Supernova had what appears to be an additional "V" shape added on top of it, albeit right-side up to ultimately form a beveled "X" shape. The existing weapons as well as those added onto it were allocated onto the re-imagined structure to effectively spread out the more potent firepower. The addition of missile tubes on these structures positioned between the Ion cannons, with the intention of both weapon types being used in concert in a brutal frontal assault, made the Supernova statistically more formidable than it's predecessor.

Speed and manoeuverablility were priorities to the Paragon designers, in the interest of keeping the tradition of a swift support vessel the Nova originally embodied. An improved powerplant was used to allow for this and with the ships increased size, the hangar bay could once again carry two fighter squadrons. However, with these changes, so, too, did the price tag increase. The bid to phase out the venerable Nova with the new Supernova has proven to be a much slower process than that of replacing Battle Dragons with Wyverns. As a result, existing Novas are still fielded with plans for total retirement pushed back to the next decade.

Development Thread: If Deemed Necessary

Intent: To improve and modernise the Nova-Class Battle Cruiser known from Canon. It's 800 years in the future of known Star Wars canon, so naturally, new and improved designs of existing ship would have turned up at some point.
