Maneuverability Rating: 2

Speed Rating: 2

Hyperdrive Class: 1, Back-up: 8

Strengths:

It is fast and manoeuvreable.

Superior situational awareness

Limited stealth

Weaknesses:

Despite attempts at passive stealth, which is by no means perfect as later detailed, its Pulse Detonation Ion Engines (PDIEs) are notoriously loud with a distinctive staccato in atmospheric flight.

If the opaque canopy is sufficiently damaged, the pilot can be blinded due to the tiny holocams no longer transmitting to the cockpit interior. This was accounted for in its design, but it is still a risk.

It is notably expensive and thus is produced conservatively.

The SLAM afterburners are fuel inefficient and sustained or excessive use can greatly limit its operational range. In a heated fight, using the afterburners excessively can create a potential tactical disadvantage when fighters need to refuel/rearm too often.

Description: Paragon Enterprises saw the need to develop a new, competitive Starfighter to replace aging and obsolete designs, so they gathered data on historical starfighters and developed a new concept. Working under the top secret codename “Project Switchblade”, the Munitions Department of Paragon Enterprises designed what is now known as the Type M-808 Terminus. Much of the content of Project Switchblade is still highly classified to this day.

Several concepts went into the new design, among them S-foils. Many historical designs researched had some form of variable geometry to their wings for a variety of purposes. The Terminus would make use of S-foils in a way that effectively gave the project its’ name. The wings swing in and out like a switchblade knife, going from Forward-swept to a tight, needle-like delta configuration. The whole overarching idea was to ensure the craft could perform admirably in both space and in an atmosphere, thus the aerodynamics of the s-foil design was a critical part of the development. With shields up, the wings folded in, and the afterburners activated, the ship could reach speeds nearing Mach 6 in an atmosphere temporarily.

The SLAM system was an old Imperial design that burned more fuel in a shorter amount of time resulting in a powerful, albeit temporary, burst of sustained speed. This concept wasn’t new to the Hapes Consortium, as the design had been stolen centuries ago as technological spoils of conflict when the Empire made their futile incursions into Hapan Space during the Galactic Civil War and saw use in certain modified versions of the dated Miy’til design. Now used as an afterburner system, SLAM makes a comeback in the Terminus.

The ion engines were completely redesigned, taking cues from old Imperial TIE concepts and Incom designs from yesteryear. The two were married in the form of a resurrection of the ancient pulse-detonation concept, although modernised. Used alone, the PDIEs tended to save on fuel costs in the long term while providing the potential for supersonic flight even in an atmosphere, sans modern shielding. With shielding in play, however, the Terminus would be able to cruise at hypersonic speeds. With the volatile afterburner system activated, the ship could break the Mach 5 threshold. Stealth became a topic of concern during production such that it was decided to have the PDIEs shaped to fit flush with the profile of the ship with a better efflux neutralising capability to reduce visibility to ordinance that tracked ion emissions. For atmospheric flight, four narrow intakes were mounted on the ship dorsal and ventral sides to make room for the internal weapon bays and the Astromech droid socket.

The general profile of the ship was to be sleek and pleasing to the eye, as would be expected of Hapan designers. However, the idea to reduce the cross-section of the craft to existing sensor technology prompted the addition of sharp angles at certain parts of the fuselage. Stygium was extremely expensive, prohibitively so, and the ability to make effective use of it as a de facto cloaking device required a power-plant equivalent to that of a Corvette at least. Therefore, lacking the ability to employ such a device, older concepts like craft profile geometry yielded a modest reduction of the ship’s cross-section against some forms of actively scanning sensors, although the infrared signature remains an unmitigated problem due to costs and power constraints. Existing heatsink technologies help deal with the heat from the deflector shield’s ordinance absorption but only in the standard ranges. Gun ports for the dual link-fire laser cannon system and the ion cannons were given serrated nozzles while the revolver cylinders that mounted the fighter’s payload of concussion missiles were mounted in internal weapon bays on the underside of the ship’s fuselage.

Finally, the cockpit was designed with an opaque armoured design, fitting flush with the rest of the ship’s profile and opening and closing by the forward partition sliding back and forth. The outer skin was pitted with small hexagonal transparisteel lenses that housed small holocams. Inside the cockpit, the pilot was able to see everything around him or her without as much obstruction as a traditional bubble canopy. Further, the targeting computer was integrated with the internal projection display as well as tactical data. The pilot also wore a visor that allowed the pilot’s line of sight to influence the data displayed, including which target to track. This freed up the droid co-pilot to focus on ship’s maintenance and integrity while in flight. The concept was given the tongue-in-cheek description of “fly by visual”. While the concern existed that if the holocams were rendered inoperable, the pilot would be flying blind, the advantageous potential was judged to outweigh the risk. The entire cockpit unit can separate from the fuselage in the event of ejection, which sets an automatic ten-second self-destruction protocol in the rest of the ship. This was meant to prevent the craft from being salvaged by enemy forces and reverse engineered. Paragon takes keeping its proprietary trade secrets and keeping classified information classified very seriously.

The Terminus can make use of several kinds of ordinance, although it was designed primarily as an aerospace supremacy interceptor. As a result, it is commonly outfitted with weapons designed to destroy other ships/aircraft. However, air-to-ground missiles can be used for tactical strikes. It was not designed for de facto bombing runs, however.

Looks pretty good so far. I realize that Paragon Enterprises is getting resurrected, but we can get this worked out in the meantime while it's being resubmitted.

Any sort of stealth technology inclusion generally requires a minimum of a 10 post development thread. The more powerful the stealth features are, the longer the development thread. This seems to be on the low end of the stealth spectrum, meaning that 10 posts would be fine.

K! I'm working on a dev thread for Heirlark Base and it will include the use of these ships.... the thread will feature both subjects prominently, so I hope this will work. :3

considering Star wars tech, real life forms of stealth tech we are familiar with would have limited usefulness here... at best, jsut having the things shaped reminicient of an F-22 or other 5th gen fighter jet with a low radar profile would serve to make it harder for ballistic missiles and targetting computers to get a lock unless you're right on top of the thing. otherwise, it's no better than any other ship in terms of detectability on sensors, since true cloaking would be impossible to do with a fighter and anti-sensor sprays would be more expensive...

[member="Relina Zhan"], like Draco mentioned earlier, as long as it is a ten separate posts specifically set aside for that purpose (bringing the thread up to 30 posts if I'm tracking right), that should be fine.

There is canon precedent set with certain shapes being easier to hide with sensors not unlike modern technology (the Loronar Skyblind comes to mind), so I think that your idea of geometry playing a role in stealth is not unreasonable by any means. I wouldn't have any problem with suggesting in the description that the Terminus was stealthy at long ranges, though not so much at shorter ranges.
