STANDARD FEATURES
Being a civilian vessel, the Pakuuni-type utilizes specialized sensors for detecting ores and minerals, but is otherwise well below what would be considered military standard. Its powerful mining lasers and heavy tractor beams are used for moving and tearing apart large asteroids.

ADVANCED SYSTEMS
Hyperdrive Systems
Strengths:
  • Durability: The Pakuuni-type is designed to travel to the edges of meteor showers and asteroid fields, and thus, while only boasting civilian-grade shields it is fitted with thick heavy plating of molecularly bonded armor capable of withstanding collisions and meteor strikes.
  • Automation: The deep space mining operation is primarily automated, with only a handful of engineers, miners, and command staff needed to operate the vessel.
Weaknesses:
  • Civilian Ship: The ship, despite its massive size and heavy armor, is hardly armed with anything more than some defensive weaponry, just enough to ward off fast moving pirate ships.
DESCRIPTION
The Pakuuni-type Deep Space Mining Barge is designed for independent operation in uninhabited systems, tearing off massive pieces of asteroids, planetoids, and comets for raw materials to be processed, condensed, and shipped back to civilization. Most Pakuuni-type barges were loosely based on the Outbound Flight Project, designed to spend most of their lifespans away from civilization gathering materials, and for this it was equipped with water recycling plants, a biome to be used as a greenhouse for a food source, and a small factorium within its holds to produce replacement parts when necessary.

When gathering material the Pakuuni-type lowers four large mining crawlers onto the largest objects it prospects where they strip mine the object with brutal efficiency, using mining lasers, seismic pulses, and other heavy tools to tear them into smaller pieces while extracting the precious resources and sending them to the ship’s holds through the tethers.

Other, smaller pieces are captured using the ship’s tractor beams and drawn within the Ship’s “wings” on the dorsal surface of the vessel where they are assaulted by gravitic pulses and smashed into dust held within a tractor field until they are able to be filtered of waste material and the contents valuable ores brought into its cavernous storage holds.

Once the two primary holds are full and can contain no more of the raw materials, they are compressed using a high powered gravitational field disruptorhttps://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Gravitational_field_disruptor. Once in this form, the cargo is fitted with a navigation module and lowered into the transit tube where energy tethers connect the four pieces. The Navigation module is programmed with the proper course through hyperspace, then the cargo is loaded into the Hyperspace Cannon along the spine of the vessel and fired into Hyperspace where it will eventually reach its destination. Sometimes smaller shipments are packaged and sent, such as when they encounter precious metals in relatively small quantities.

The class's size is immense, with many cavernous holds and long corridors. Several large lifts for moving mining equipment and cargo are found within the four towers that form the ship’s superstructure and a pair of tram-rails run the length of the ship, parallel to the Hyperspace Cannon emplaced along its spine. Along its spine are compartmentalized holds, usually used for equipment but capable of being repurposed into barracks or engineering bays if necessary and are easily modifiable, making no two of the vessel’s interior identical. The only constants are the communication center located on the ventral surface between the aft pylons, the bridge nestled between the four towers that make up the ship’s superstructure, and the hangar bays set to either side of the Hyperspace Cannon on the prow.

Though largely automated, the Pakuuni is woefully outdated, having first been laid down decades prior to the end of the Four Hundred Year Darkness and first used by planets as a means to mine nearby uninhabited systems and conserve fuel resources normally used in shipping materials. By the time the Four Hundred Year Darkness came to an end, they were already obsolete, primarily used by ExGal Society Mining Corphttps://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Extragalactic_Society or dry-leased to mining operations taking place outside charted systems.
