Description:

During the Republic’s restructuring of the Navy and Army, the need for more powerful weapons was realized. Taking the initiative, the Republic commissioned a new weapon to be designed for the larger ships in the Republic’s navy for use against enemy ships in the field.

The culmination of this work was the P2-CA1 Weapon System. Mounted on a starship, the weapon quickly showed it was a very powerful and very lethal weapon. The P2-CA1 uses an electromagnetic field to accelerate and direct charged particles through electrostatic “lenses” to focus the particles into a cohesive beam. Once fired, these particles impact the target causing tremendous, catastrophic, and almost instantaneous superheating of the surface target. The P2-CA1 was determined too heavy and costly to field in batteries both for its size and power levels to fire. Instead, it was placed on a turret mount with the ability to swivel while firing.

The P2-CA1 fires a single beam at the target that lasts for roughly five seconds, though the cool down rate is, on average, thirty seconds in between shots. This beam, as all other beam weapons, requires the weapon to remain on target to maximize damage potential. This means that care must be taken to maintain target acquisition for the weapon, especially once fired and during its five second beam projection. Maximum damage is possible when the weapon is kept on the same location the entire five seconds, however it is possible to spread the damage by “raking” the beam along the side of the target to create less damage but over more area.

The weapon system is not without its faults, however. The P2-CA1 is somewhat vulnerable to ion weapons as the weapon requires electromagnets to fire the charged particles. Severe ion damage will require capacitor repairs and replacements done externally outside the ship. Moderate or less damage takes about five to ten minutes for the weapon system to reset the capacitors and begin firing once more. While the weapon is powerful, it requires target acquisition management to maximize damage. Raking the target is possible, but in doing so the weapon may go off target and miss, negating any further damage. Finally, this weapon requires a significant power draw, meaning fewer guns can be fielded on the ships mounting the P2-CA1 Weapon System.
