Private Outside the Ring

The sound of bodies striking the padded floor carried easily over the conversations surrounding the fighting ring. Sitha Nor Yunet stood among the spectators, her mismatched eyes following the movements of the two combatants as they circled one another. The crowd was several people deep in places, filled with spectators offering encouragement, criticism, and the occasional unsolicited advice. Some appeared to have credits riding on the outcome, judging by their increasingly enthusiastic reactions whenever one fighter gained an advantage. Sitha had no such investment. She had come for the fighting itself, and so far, she had found the experience worth her attention.

Her travels had exposed her to several unfamiliar martial traditions, although watching them practiced was considerably different from facing them herself. The monastery had taught her to recognize the relationship between balance, momentum, and intent, but there were countless ways to apply those principles. One combatant favored powerful, committed strikes intended to overwhelm an opponent's defenses, while the other relied upon smaller movements and careful positioning. Neither approach was inherently superior, although Sitha could already identify several opportunities both had failed to exploit. She resisted the temptation to offer advice. They were here to test one another, not entertain the observations of an opinionated Farghul standing somewhere beyond the boundary.

A particularly forceful exchange brought an appreciative murmur from the audience. Sitha tilted her head slightly, the ornaments woven into her sandy-brown braids shifting against her shoulders as she watched one fighter recover from an awkward landing. Her tail curled thoughtfully behind her, its tip moving in a slow rhythm that betrayed more interest than her otherwise composed expression suggested. She had seen enough contests to know that strength alone rarely determined the outcome, but she also understood that technique was considerably easier to appreciate when someone else's bones were absorbing the punishment.

"Too much weight on the leading foot," she murmured, mostly to herself. "That's going to hurt eventually."

The observation was nearly lost beneath another swell of conversation as the fighters resumed their exchange. Someone behind her shouted encouragement, while a nearby spectator complained loudly about a questionable maneuver. Sitha's tufted ears turned instinctively toward the commotion before returning their attention to the ring. She found the atmosphere rather enjoyable despite the noise. There was something refreshingly uncomplicated about a contest in which two individuals could measure their abilities against one another without necessarily becoming enemies.

She shifted her position to allow another spectator a clearer view, taking care not to catch anyone with her tail. At six feet tall, Sitha could see reasonably well over parts of the crowd, though there were enough taller species present to make an unobstructed view a luxury. The air carried the mingled scents of perspiration, food, and too many bodies gathered in one place, none of which particularly appealed to her fastidious nature. Nevertheless, she had endured considerably worse during her training, and a little discomfort was hardly sufficient reason to abandon an interesting spectacle.

Another exchange drew her attention fully back to the ring. This time, the smaller movement proved more effective, allowing one combatant to redirect an incoming strike and briefly compromise the other's balance. A pleased smile tugged at the corners of Sitha's muzzle. She folded her arms loosely across her chest, her claws remaining comfortably retracted as she settled in to watch what came next.

"Now that," she commented with quiet approval, "was considerably better."

For the moment, she was perfectly content to remain among the spectators. There was no telling what else the afternoon might offer, and Sitha had learned that some of the galaxy's more interesting experiences began when she had no particular plans at all.
