- Crushing Strength: The strength of the snake rests in its constricting ability. Its powerful constriction can crush bones quickly as it suffocates its prey. Once caught in its coil, there is no escape.
- Razor Teeth: The mouth consists of top and lower rows of razor-sharp teeth. The teeth serve two purposes, with the first being for defense, where it's bite can rip and tear through flesh. The second purpose is to hold its prey after it catches it, keeping it in place as it begins to coil around it.
- Speed: For its size, the snake has unbelievable speed for a species that requires slithering for movement.
- Sun Sickness: The snake is not entirely nocturnal, choosing to stay in areas where it is dark. Its decision to hunt at night and in dark areas is a result of a sickness from exposure to sun gamma rays. Though it will not kill it, it will cause it to become lethargic and other hampers, making it susceptible to other predators.
- Fast Metabolism: The metabolism of the snake forces it to feed more often than those of other snake species. As such, it is almost driven to eat.
- Poor Eyesight: The snake's red eyes are misleading. It was believed they could see in the dark, but in fact they are nearly blind. Thus, they rely on other senses and the vibrations on the ground from moving prey to hunt.

- General behavior: There is no family life among the species. They procreate, separate, the male leaves, and the female lays her eggs. After the hatchlings are born, the mother will nurse them for about three months before abandoning them. Because of their high metabolism, they are advent hunters; one of the best on Dathomir. Because of their sun sickness, they tend to hunt more at night, but they are not nocturnal by nature.
The Ossothious is a species of snake inhabiting the planet of Dathomir, which can be found in caves, cliffs, and canyons. It's considered a constrictor by the method it kills and consumes its prey. The Ossothious have been on the planet since the discovery of Dathomir, and is considered the apex predator of the snake classification on Dathomir. The snakes tend to live a solitary life, for the exception for mating, and are occasionally seen, mostly at night or in dark secluded caves, cliffs with small dark pockets, and canyons where the sun rarely touches. They prey on small mammals, lizards, and birds which consists of their main diet, but will consume other prey outside their normal diet.
Considering the speed they possess, they are ambush hunters, striking quickly to obtain their prey. The snake's size can be seen as a threat, especially with those teeth in their maw, but in fact are shy and docile. They are known to only strike out at much bigger prey, ones they cannot consume, when they are cornered and threatened. Some snakes have been raised as pets by the Nightsisters, and are in fact make excellent companions.
