During the modern era, the fleet strategy of the Confederacy of Independent Systems has revolved around the deployment of starfighter swarms onto the field of battle. Through this, the plan is generally to overwhelm the enemy forces with the sheer volume of fighters; but with any strategy there are shortcomings with this plan of action. In fact, one of the greatest threats to the starfighter swarms was that of swift-moving vessels armed to the teeth with anti-fighter cannons. As such, the design teams of Druckenwell Shipyards began formulating new ways of facing down these vessels whilst simultaneously allowing the starfighters to initiate attack runs against the enemy. The results of these brainstorming sessions manifested in the form of the Onaconda-class Shield Frigate: a durable vessel named after the Rodian member of the ancient, Separatist council.
To begin, the vessel's composition matched what has become standard for products of Druckenwell Shipyards. Its hull plating and frame were both composed of a combination of metals; each known for their impressive durability. Durasteel, Turadium, and Quadranium were each reinforced and employed in the construction of the vessel, thereby allowing the Onaconda-class to withstand an impressive sum of punishment in the event of shield droppage. Aesthetically, the vessel was deliberately shaped in a manner which differed from the typical capital ship; consisting of four "wings". The plan here is to allow the starfighters to group behind the wings whilst approaching enemy capital ships, thereby shielding them from the enemy offensive and defensive armaments. Then, upon reaching bombing range, the starfighters will break away in order to initiate attack runs.
In order to make this a possibility, the engineering teams incorporated a Sublight Acceleration Motor into the vessel's design. Once activated, power is diverted from half of the defensive emplacements and is then contributed to temporarily augmenting the vessel's sublight speed. Once active, the Onaconda-class is capable of moving at a pace akin to the average bomber. In order to accommodate this motor, space that would typically be set aside for a starfighter complement was dedicated. As a whole, the Onaconda-class Shield Frigate is poised to be a capable and durable answer to the anti-starfighter armaments employed by the various, Galactic powers.
