"I got the usual corporate stuff in my holiday gift basket... cheap datapad, holocube with my name in it, and a favor droid. That thing chattered at me all day, 'til I pulled its battery out."
_Unknown office worker.
Favor droids. Known the Galaxy over as party favors, cheap gifts and symbols of corporate culture, countless models of these pint-sized mechanicals are manufactured by any number of toy, office supply and nick-knack companies, and can be found in gift baskets, souvenir shops and discount stores on countless worlds. Though materials and features vary depending on the manufacturer, favor droids are almost universally small and cheaply constructed, and usually cost only a few credits or to purchase. Due to their diminutive size, favor droids are constantly underfoot of organics and other mechanicals. Some variations, especially those found in gift shops, often have a gimmick in addition to their standard features; a common one is a built-in spot-on locator, coupled with guide programming to direct tourists to popular attractions and local businesses. The life-span of these droids - especially on heavily urbanized worlds - can typically be measured in minutes, due to the hazards faced by these tiny machines in large crowds. Theft and trampling are common ends.
Favor droid are notorious as a throwaway gift; they are often handed out to new employees at large corporations, or given away as party favors. Flimsy and forgettable, they are known for accumulating, acquired and then forgotten by their owners like free styluses or other nick-knacks.
This utter innocuousness has attracted some attention, however.
Because favor droids are so common and easily overlooked, they have become useful tools for spies, slicers, bounty hunters, assassins and even smugglers. Modified to carry extra equipment or perform certain tasks, favor droids are ignored by all but the most stringent security, and can get into places most organics or even some other droids would not be able to go without arousing suspicion. Some outlaw techs even specialize in the alteration of these droids, augmenting them with abilities usually found only in more sophisticated mechanicals, albeit with more versatility.
Cheap and easy to acquire, favor droids can be found almost anywhere, though they are seldom noticed.
"Stepped on the new guy's favor droid... he was using it to run messages in the hall. Stupid."
_Unknown office worker.
The OMS series is a common, slightly higher end model of favor droid, manufactured as a lucrative side business by Serv-O-Droid's small products division. Standing about 20 centimeters tall, its injection-molded plasto casing roughly resembles a half-cylinder with a flared base. It travels on a single micro-repulsor, which is of low quality, only capable of raising the lightweight mechanical a few centimeters off the ground. The droid has two miniature manipulator arms protruding from its front, each tipped with a small, pincer-style claw.
Aimed primarily at the corporate market, the OMS has a number of features meant to endear it to office workers. It is equipped with a cheap microphone, able to record a few minutes of low-fidelity audio for later playback, as well as an integrated talking chronometer and calendar/day planner, though this feature is notorious for being difficult to access and program. The droid can also speak a single pre-programmed language, though its cheap, buzzing vocoder can make this feature more of an annoyance than a help.
OMS droids can in theory be used to run messages and carry small objects, though in practice this is fairly dangerous. As tiny as they are, these machines are easy to step on, despite the inclusion of a motion sensor to help them detect and avoid unwary footfalls.
OMS droids are also equipped with a standard datacard slot. This can be used to feed new information and programming into the droid, or simply used to store the card while the OMS carries it somewhere.
Overall, the most useful feature included as standard in the OMS is a small vacuum cleaner. Though not especially powerful, it is most often used to clean crumbs and dust from desktops, as well as the floor inside cubicle spaces.
Though only equipped with a basic personality matrix, the OMS is notable for the kind of skills and behaviors they can develop, though given the average longevity of such machines these seldom have a chance to manifest. Nevertheless, there are rumors of a colony of small droids living in the Coruscant undercity, originally founded by a shipment of OMS units which fell off a speeder truck, adapting to their new environment and carving out a place among the underlevel predators.
