Official Committee Statements

Not open for further replies.
Mark Crassis stepped up tot he podium and cleared his throat, before him in his datapad he had the official statements from the Committee. It was important that it be transparent to the remainder of the Senate to review the transcripts themselves and, therefore, have a better understanding of the circumstances in which Alyesa Organa choose to leave the Republic and the Senate.

"My fellow Senators." Crassis said fixing his glasses with a wrinkling of his nose, "The committee investigation into the actions of Alyesa Organa and Genevieve Lasedri has now concluded."

"Both transcripts for Organa's and Lasedri's hearings have been sent to each of you."

"The committee, upon reviewing the evidence of 'genocide' and 'regicide' against the Prime Minister, found little evidence of such actions and when pressed for further information, Alyesa Organa choose to cut the meeting short and attempt to remove Ranklinge from the Galactic Republic."

"Therefore the committee has dismissed the charges against Prime Minister Genevieve Lasedri, as little evidence was presented pointing to the validity of the charges. We invite the Prime Minister to step forward and discuss her relationship with the Rebel Alliance. As for Alyesa Organa, it is the judgement of the committee that there is not enough evidence for a conviction of treason. However, her attempt at pulling Ranklinge from the Galactic Republic has resulted in her being stripped of her position and barred from the Senate. Ranklinge is encourage to put forward a new Senator at their earliest convenience."

"We also recommend, that under no circumstances, is Incom Coporation to be trusted as a supplier of the Republic again, should the opportunity arise. This recommendation has been relayed to [member="Kayleigh Tyven"] the Supreme Commander of the Military."

"At this point, we invite any comments or statements from the Senatorial body."

The eye stalks of the Gung surveyed the room.

It would not be his preference to speak first, but he would be heard. Standing, the Gung approached the podium. "Weesa believes dat much knowledge and experience of a veteran politician has been lost to our Republic dis day," the man began. That [member="Alyesa Organa"] had considerable knowledge and experience, both with the Republic government and the corporate sector, was an indisputable fact. The loss of that experience was regrettable, no matter the circumstances.

"However, Cyrillia can not dispute da findings or da recommendations of dis-ah committee," the Gung went on to add, hanging his head slightly as he did. "Da transcripts are clear, da inquiries logical, and da discussion enlightening as to da reasoning behind da findings an' da recommendations."

At the point that planetary separation was brought into the debate, all political capital had been lost. Especially as a relatively new planet in the Republic, the Gungan senator could not support any decision which might lend itself to some separatist agenda being created within the Republic. To do so invited weakness in the face of a war so real that an invasion of the Republic was taking place even now.

"In as much as da choices made sadden us, Cyrillia supports dis decision," the Gung stated finally. "Weesa express our gratitude to da Honored Members of dis committee for der service to Cyrillia and da Republic."

And, with that, the Gungan returned to his seat.

Aurelia navigated her pod into the arena and leaned over the podium. "Mister Speaker, I rise to echo the comments of my honorable friend the member for Cyrillia. Truly it is a loss to the Republic itself for a statesman once held in esteem to now be absent from this body. However, I cannot let this occasion pass without rising in opposition to certain implications we are all no doubt gathering from this transcript, and others in the record for this body."

The Senator tugged at the hem of her sleeve nervously. Politics seemed to be a bloodsport these days, and at the moment Aurelia was feeling particularly unarmed. She was new to this body, her planet relatively new to the Republic. And yet she had certain principles, principles which she had to have faith that her people understood and shared. After muting her microphone to clear her throat, she inclined her head to address the Senate once more.

"Mister Speaker, I find the notion troubling that the presiding member of this body should, during a heated political debate and for reasons that are, from my reading of the official record, clearly political, seek to create a policy of nationalizing industries existing and operating in Republic space, not through any legal means, nor deliberative measures, nor legislative methods, but through decree. To level charges of treason for the sole reason that the corporation elects no longer to do business with the Republic is, to be charitable, highly troubling. And let us not mistake that this is what has been done. Do you imagine, Senators, that there are many corporations currently operating in the Republic who are now willing to take the chance? Though no law is on the book, nor a judicial or legislative action to nationalize any industry, that is what has been done in a de facto sense with the threatening of our former colleague." The Senator paused and surveyed her colleagues.

"I would suggest to my fellow members of this body that it is the Republic's opportunities that make it great -- it is our protection of individual and group rights that sets us apart from others seeking influence in this galaxy. I would earnestly ask my colleagues to remember with pride that which makes the Republic exceptional: our commitment to freedom, to justice, to democracy. Neither freedom, nor justice, nor democracy has been served by the current diversion. I can only hope that now that this shameful affair is concluded, this body can return to these basic principles." The Senator began guiding her pod back towards its slot.

"Mister Speaker, I yield back to the chair and reserve the balance of my time."

The Venan Senator shook his head and signaled that he wished to take the floor. Once he was approved, he moved his pod into the center, where speakers hovered their pods during speeches.

"It is my fervent hope, as well, that these matters are settled. There are important matters of state that require our attention." He paused for a second, looking around at the various Senators and observers all around him in the Senate chambers. "However, I am certainly not saddened by the loss of a Senator like Former Senator Organa. Yes, she brought a wealth of business and state craft to these chambers, but anyone who would jeopardize this Republic with the actions she took need not be allowed in these chambers. There is a war going on, and while it may be an academic thing for a great many of you, there are some among us, myself included, who have witnessed and survived the ravages of war to bring our experience to you. Yes, a private company has every right to withdraw their holdings from Republic space. Yes, a company can refuse to continue transactions with the Republic at their whim. However, it is an entirely other issue for a company to renege on previous transactions and remove property that is no longer theirs from Republic service. Those fighters had been purchased fairly, then they were removed illegally. Such a person who would order such is not a person to be missed in these chambers."

Arthur smiled softly and again shook his head. "I fear that my words may have started another wild fire of opinions, but I do implore you, my fellow Senators, to return to the state craft that our nations have voted us here to perform. The Republic needs us to do our job." He turned and bowed his head slightly to the Committee Speaker. "I return the floor, Mister Speaker."

With that, Arthur returned his pod to the Venan anchor point and sat in his chair. He pulled over a data slate, attached to the arm of the chair, and pulled up the reports from recent military actions. Once a soldier, always a soldier. He just hoped that he could do something more for the soldiers out fighting with his new position.

Aurelia listened to the response of her colleague. He raised valid points, to be sure, and his record (what little Aurelia knew of it, anyway) was much to be commended. That didn't make him any less wrong when it came down to it, in her mind. She signaled her intention again and rose to her feet, standing over the podium where she activated her microphone. "Mister Speaker, I thank the honorable gentleman for his measured response to this series of events and both commend and echo his urging that we have been sent here to perform specific the function of state. What troubles me is that the people once represented by our former colleague have been deprived of their right to representation -- something which may have been necessary under the circumstances, but which in the opinion of myself and the people of New Holstice ought not to be done hastily nor without the full approval of this body. Mister Speaker, I know not from which statute or constitutional justification this closed committee draws its authority to cast out elected representatives without so much as a roll call vote in the Senate, but I do intend to find out. Today it was Senator Organa, whose actions perhaps warranted it. Tomorrow..." She spread her hands as if to include all of her colleagues. "Well. I will leave each member to draw his own conclusions as to the slippery slopes we find ourselves in when placing power in the hands of the few."

Senator Volcata paused and took a drink of water from the crystal glass near her podium. Democracy was thirsty work. "Before I yield my time back to the chair, Mister Speaker, if you will indulge me just a moment more. Something that the honorable gentleman said has struck a chord with me," she indicated [member="Arthur d'Angele"] with an airy hand. "Certainly our former colleague's actions are in-advised. Certainly, they shock the conscience. But, as I do not need to remind my colleagues, the word treason and the legal charge it brings are quite, quite serious. More serious, I believe, than is justified by the Senator's actions. Each time the word 'treason' is bandied about for brazen political purposes, it makes the word and its accompanying charge less and less powerful. But treason against the Republican ought not to be considered lightly, nor suggested lightly. I would hope that members of this body will in future recall this and offer restraint."

"Mister Speaker, I yield back to the chair and reserve the remainder of my time."

While Arthur held some of the soldier's belief that politics was the game of misinformation, he didn't truly believe that the Senator of New Holstice truly meant to make it seem as if Arthur had indeed bandied the word traitor about. To be sure, however, he slid the military reports into a minimized state on his dataslate and pulled up the active recording and transcription of the current proceedings. He scrolled back to his own words and reviewed them for a moment before indicating he wished to speak again.

It wouldn't do any good for his political career, nor for his constituents, to be seen as a loose lipped Senator who threw accusations without provocation. He shortly received the signal to speak, and he once again maneuvered his pod into the open air.

"One small item, then I assure you I will return the floor to the committee's speaker, thank you Senator Crassis." He offered a nod to Mark Crassis, then turned to the gathering at large. "As I know that re-reading of the whole transcript of proceedings such as these will become far to tedious, even for our aides, I would like to point out one small discrepancy." He offered a small smile and nod to his colleague from New Holstice before he continued. "Never once did I condemn anyone for treason as of yet. All my remark stated, as the record shows, is that the act of recalling fighters that were sold into Republic service was, itself, an illegal act. I am not calling for an inquiry, I am not demanding that the former Senator be brought here for another inquiry."

True to his word, Arthur nodded once again to Mark and returned to the Venan anchor. He took a deep breath and brought up the military reports. He was still waiting for after action reports from Telti, that would truly be telling as to the military readiness of Republic forces.

Crassis listened to each senator present their points and was happy to see this spurning debate, regardless of which side of the debate he himself might sit on. Anything that got the blood pumping in the Senate was a good thing in Crassis's mind.

"Senator Volcata," Crassis said rising to his feet and clearing his voice. "One point of interest I should point out is that the committee was far from finding Senator Organa at fault for removing Incom from the Republic. I'm sure Senators Balor and Notechis will agree with me when I say that the burden of proof was far from met in either case and would likely both have ended in no sanctions against either party." Crassis said, speaking of his own evaluation of the evidence that had been presenting, but believing that the other two committee members would agree with him.

"As for your issue with her being removed from the Senate, that was her own doing." Crassis said shrugging. "Had Senator Organa giving the proceedings the time and effort to run their course, she'd be here today speaking with us. But her choice to attempt to remove her planet from the Republic forced our hand."

"It was agreed by both parties, the Prime Minister and the Senator, that they would abide by the ruling of the Committee. When Senator Organa attempted to remove her planet from the Republic, she made it clear that she was no longer acting in the best interest of her planet and was therefore no longer a suitable representative for Ranklinge."

"If your fellow Senators believe we overstepped our charge, I'd like to hear it." Crassis said, being honest. "So that in the future we might establish the authority the Senate wishes its committees to have."

"But make no mistake, Senator Organa will not serve the Republic again." Crassis said shaking his head. "Her actions threatened the very stability of the Republic. Senators can not use their planets as a political ploy. Let that be understood by us all. Our planets association with the Republic are not bargaining chips!"

Ater Notechis

Same agenda, different place...
Ater simply nodded. Senator Crassis spoke the truth but as was always the case in these matters, people made their own minds up - often irrespective of the facts.

But both hearings were heading to inconclusive outcomes despite the rumours and hearsay, because it was only proof that mattered when decisions were to be made.

Yet despite this fact, or maybe because they were coming close to a truth - Senator Organa jumped when there was no likelihood she was going to be pushed.

And the wake of evidence she left behind surely meant her political career was behind her. And some Senators would miss her - which was their prerogative. Would Ater speak? Was their any point? No on both counts.

"Mister Speaker," Aurelia spoke pleasantly into her microphone as her pod orbited the chamber. "I would kindly ask my honorable friend, the member for Vena, to review his transcripts again and indicate where I suggest he did any of the things he has listed? I will save this chamber's time by answering the question: I did not. I simply said that what you said struck a chord with me. By listing the parade of horribles committed by our former colleague Senator Organa and in the manner that he did, the honorable gentleman, the member for Vena simply gave me food for thought. As I said, certainly Senator Organa's actions were ill-advised and certainly not to the Republic's best interests and certainly some of the actions were illegal. However, such actions do not, in my humble opinion, rise to the level of treason. My admonition is not for the honorable gentleman, the member for Vena, but for those who are quick to make such charges for political expediency. Out of respect for parliamentary dignity, I will refrain from naming names, but I assure you that far from taking issue with the member for Vena's words, I was provoked to think on them. My honorable friend certainly has my apologies if I did not communicate this adequately."

As New Holstice's pod rotated serenely around the chamber, Aurelia glanced down at her notes, scribbled quickly as she was listening to Senator Crassis' remarks. "I crave your indulgence, Mister Speaker, for I confess I am now somewhat perplexed by the comments of my honorable friend, the member for Shulstine V. He tells us, in the opening of this session, that Senator Organa has been stripped of her position and barred from the Senate. He has instructed the people who elected the Senator, rightly or wrongly, instructions for their next choice. Mister Speaker, I would posit that it is for the people of Ranklinge, and of New Holstice, and of Shulstine V, and of Bal'demnic to determine who best represents their interests. I would suggest that it is an over-reach on the part of any committee or Prime Minister in this body to negate the will of a people when expressed through free and fair elections. Not from one committee hearing. Mister Speaker, our constituents send us to this body not to join a monolithic body of unbending support for the political status quo, but to represent their interests. Certainly I don't feel comfortable speaking to the interests of Shulstine V or Bal'demnic or Ranklinge, nor would I feel comfortable with the honorable members from Shulstine V, Bal'demnic, and Ranklinge deciding what the interest sof the people of New Holstice are."

She paused and inclined her head. "Mister Speaker, I feel I have entered this body in a time of transition. The authorities granted to branches and committees and offices is, I must confess, rather nebulous to me at this time. But I am very pleased to hear that my honorable friend, the member for Shulstine V, is open to taking a look at these questions and resolving them. I hope he will stand with me in resolving them in favor of the freedom of the governed. One question his comments leads me to question is this: under what circumstances can a Senator, elected to his post by a vast majority of voters of a planet on a platform of secession from the Republic, bring the will of his people to this body. It seems that my honorable friend, the member for Shulstine V, sees the planets and systems that make up this Republic as property of the Republic, rather than willing participants. I would pose a point of information to the honorable gentleman to allow him a chance to clarify his remarks in this regard, if he should choose. Failing that, Mister Speaker, I yield back to the chair and reserve the remainder of my time."

Crassis listened as Senator Volcata pushed further with the issue. He agreed, as had the committee given time, that treason was a far stretch with the evidence presented to them in relation to Incom Corporations pullout, but it was not necessary a waste of time. Much of the argument hinged on a single piece of evidence. Had the Senator still been actively considered representing her planet at the time of the move, it may have swayed the committee to a condemnation of her actions.

Regardless, this wasn't the issue being presented at this time, but rather the rights of the committee to make the choice they made. Crassis, being a rather curmudgeon of a man, had to bite back a question as to when the two of them had become "friends." Crassis was not personally familiar with the Senator nor would he consider her a friend....but Crassis considered very, very few people to be his friend. It was an occupational hazard.

"And if the people of Ranklinge wished to secede from the Galactic Republic they would have expressed such an opinion. The Intelligence Committee has received no words of discontent upon the world.....no word of building disillusionment. No delegations have been sent before us decree their unhappiness or their wish to secede from the Republic." Crassis said shaking his head.

"Senator Organa's actions were not actions sanctioned by the people of Ranklinge, they were the actions of someone who wished to play her planet as a trump card in the hopes of harming her perceived adversaries in the Republic." Crassis said, a little bit of bile taste in his mouth. Her actions had offended him in a deep way. To use the people of your planet as a means to an end was despicable and would not be tolerated.

"As for your question, a valid one for sure, regarding the rights of the planets." Crassis said leaning forward on his cane. "That is a question that this body can discuss at some length. But understand, the Republic is not some loose conglomeration of planets. You can not secede from the Republic just because you are unhappy with how the Senate votes, or how an election goes. If a planet is truly unhappy, it is their responsibility to make it known to the Republic through their representatives and it is our duty to do what we can to appease them.....but that doesn't mean that if they aren't satisfied they get to leave."

"We all know how well the Clone Wars went for the Republic." Crassis said, and while he was no historian, he was at least aware of this and several other key events in Republic history. "I for one do not wish to see a repeat of those days, especially at the whim of a single person."

"You may feel the committee overstepped its charge, but I disagree." Crassis said, settling back down to hear from others what they thought.

Lasedri had no less than expected a question of her judgment in calling Organa for treason, and she sighed as the back-and-forth commenced with worries on what was appropriate or not. So now there was a debate over a debate over a trial--quite unnecessary, but undeniably inevitable.

As there approached a moment of silence, the Galactic Republic Prime Minister took her stand, back in her usual position signifying oversight instead of some sort of defendant's chair. "I suppose it is time for a bit of clarification, is it not? I'm sure the curiosity of the masses is sensational at the moment."

Geneviève paused to look about the Senate, no datapad or prompter of any kind before her with some preordained speech to read off. She was going to present herself as she was. "I understand the concerns raised about over-utilizing the charge of 'treason'. Perhaps I was in the wrong; perhaps not. As the people of the Republic have likely gathered, I believed that the sabotage of our military in such ways as former Senator Organa demonstrated was perverse and criminal in every possible way.

"I know some of you may consider me an idealist. In truth, we all are in our own ways. Otherwise, I can guarantee that none of you would be here for whatever 'just cause' it is that put you into this office. My viewpoint is that in a time of such fear; anxiety that the people of this Republic must feel (I most certainly share their many worries.), the blatant, express act of destroying one of the most vital assets to our military is both scandalous and mortally threatening. How many have died because we had not the sufficient armaments for our fighter pilots?"

She bit her lip and glanced down for a brief period, knowing her opinion was not the most popular in this arena, however much support she might have from the general populace. As Organa had made clear, politicians are not necessarily inclined to consult the billions they represent before taking rash action. Sure, that may also apply to Lasedri herself, but she doubted anyone would miss the seven-day senator of Ranklinge. "I know many of you may not be inclined to agree with me. And that is your right. I am not a perfect individual by any means. I simply do what I believe is best and most important to the people. Right now, that means doing whatever I can to keep the Sith out of our territory. That means defending our own freedom fighters in the Defense Forces and further abroad. That means expressing indignation and seeking reprimands for destroying starfighters that could have been used to protect our worlds from the Sith's iron fist.

"Thus, I concluded that either Senator Organa cares little about this Republic and its safety, or that she cares everything about it in the sense that she would so willingly collude with our enemies to cripple the Starfighter Corps and allow them evade one of the most powerful elements of our Navy. You do realize that our Starfighter Corps is indisputably the most powerful in the galaxy?" The cameras--they had to be zooming in on her; encircling her in this moment; taking every fleck in her skin and presenting it before the trillions. Her hands began to tremble as she visited this realization, and she grasped the fore of her booth to stiffen them and prevent anyone from noticing her psychological 'disease'. "Thus I thought it was right to press charges against such a bold and corrupt senator. The charge of treason may seem overkill to many, but the logical possibility of collusion with our ruthless enemies warranted such action on my end. Organa was innocent until proven guilty. Senator Crassis has justly operated our trials."

Now to the 'issue' that had brought her to the stand in the first place. "About my sins: It is entirely true that I was a member of the Rebel Alliance. I have made no effort to deny it. In fact, I was listed in a bounty posted by the Red Raven criminal syndicate for my involvement in a failed capture attempt of their leader at the time, Cryax Bane. It's no secret.

"Also, in the wake of the One Sith's treacherous takeover of Coruscant--so many years ago--I was the one who founded the Coruscanti Resistancehttp://starwarsrp.net/topic/57465-coruscanti-resistance/, with every intention of reestablishing this Republic's presence on our storied capital world. If you have the guts to go there and ask those brave soldiers who still war on even after all trace of the Galactic Republic has been stomped on and incinerated, they will tell you it was me. That is the Rebel Alliance. That is who your friends are.

"If you want to question my integrity; my loyalty to this Republic, I recommend you serve on the frontlines sometime and see what hell it is. I took initiative to give the enslaved people hope; the understanding that someone was still with them even while the Republic was absent. I understand war. I regret nothing.

"So, if I am to be charged with the crime of serving the people of the galaxy and unwaveringly fighting against the Republic's enemies, then I guess I am guilty." She sat back down upon the conclusion of her words and held her head high.

Faith had been listening to this over and over about how corrupt her sister was, what a terrible senator her sister was but none of them not one knew the heart of her sister like she did.

Yes dammit Alyesa made bad decisions in the heat of the moment and unfortunately those moments gave her the reputation that was now swirling about the Republic Senate, taking the Organa name and any credibility that Alyesa had shredding it to mean very little. Only those who knew her would understand, and those who did would stay in the Senate seats to listen. Faith wished that Alyesa had waited, had remembered patience in the process.

Had her sister not listened when they were in school, or when they were being taught privately. There were ways to do things always. Patience was key to success in politics. Faith had not heard from her mother yet either on all of this, it would not be a conversation that they would enjoy. She was sure.

[member="Mark Crassis"] made every attempt at answering for the committee and their practices. She appreciated his position and at times some of his words.

Senator [member="Aurelia Volcata"] had her attention with her line of questions as well as keeping her calm always seeking until she got an answer.

Senator [member="Ater Notechis"] was quiet, but they had all spoken enough together Faith felt she knew her thoughts.

The Gungan [member="Jon Jon Nemo"] seemed quite pleased with the outcome, having faith in the abilities of those that served.

Senator [member="Arthur d'Angele"] had an eye for detail as he had scanned the report on the proceedings, he she would remember was a seeker of truth, and justice.

The Prime Minister [member="Geneviève Lasedri"] stood up and just as Faith expected added fuel the fire against her sister, and began to rebuild her image to the Republic since the announcement of investigation into her activities. Faith reached for the glass of water at hand she steeled her emotions cutting them down to give her courage to lift the glass without a tremble. She wasn't angry at the moment she was hurt for her family.

They had to rebuild.

Arthur sadly shook his head at the tirade the Prime Minister gave concerning Alyessa Organa. It was in poor taste, particularly seeing as Alyessa's sister was still a valued Senator. Lasedri had won, it did her no value politically, and actually painted her in a poor, petty light as far as Arthur was concerned.

Arthur was off the opinion that the Prime Minister should have only gone with the second part of her speech. However, Arthur was well aware that being up in front of the Senators could be taxing, and it didn't seem that the remarks were prepared.

He shrugged and took a sip of his water. Far in the recesses of his mind, he wished it were whiskey. Corellian, aged twenty years in Wroshyr casks, with a single ice cube. Two years sober, it was tough when every drink would be better with alcohol.

He forced his attention back to the proceedings, focusing on the matter at hand.

This whole ordeal was deeply troubling. Incom being able to take back their products. It was top tier incompetence on every level of the government and military. It was also an act of treason; no matter what this committee had to say on it. Hopefully justice will be levied against her. Sooner rather than latter.

Macharius rose to position as the silence had held in the chamber for a short time. One that wasn't meant to hold. Both arms raised up, with hands cupped and at the ready. The Senator clapped a dozen times or so. The echo carried around quietly, but the source was easily located back to the black suited man. "Prime Minister Geneviève Lasedri". Solaire paused a moment to collect his next words. Rushing in wasn't going to win minds here. "You have fought against tyranny for the cause of freedom in the name of others, and for this Republic. Few causes are more noble to take on your shoulders. A weight you have shown able to bear well. The committee has dropped the charges against you. And I am proud to say first, out of all the Senators here in this building. I still have full confidence in your leadership! Though we are far from deserving to have you. Now more than ever; as the Sith once again come against us. We need you Lasedri. And I hope you will stay on so I may stand shoulder to shoulder with you, in victory or defeat. In the hope that The Republic can again know what it means to live in freedom".
