Private Of Kings and Heretics

Malachor was not the sort of world most people offered as an invitation. Seren was well aware of that.

The planet had earned its reputation long before she had ever set foot upon it, and nothing about the blackened landscape surrounding her home did much to soften the impression. Ancient stone disappeared beneath stretches of dark earth, broken formations rose against a perpetually unforgiving sky, and the weight of history remained embedded so deeply within the world that the Force itself sometimes seemed reluctant to forget. There were places on Malachor where the past whispered loudly enough to become dangerous. Seren had learned which paths to avoid, which ruins were better left undisturbed, and which shadows were merely shadows. Somewhere along the way, the place others regarded as a graveyard had simply become home.

It had been some time since Alvaria when the message from Darth Malum had reached her through the means of contact she had provided him after the gathering. Their first meeting had hardly afforded either of them much opportunity to actually speak. There had been too many others answering his summons, too many histories converging upon one wounded world, and Seren had been content to remain near the edges and listen. Apparently Malum had been interested enough in their brief acquaintance to ask for another meeting. She had considered neutral ground for all of several minutes before deciding there was little point. If he wanted to meet Seren Gwyn rather than simply the woman who had once introduced herself as Darth Eryndis, he might as well come somewhere that belonged to her.

So she had sent him coordinates.

Her home stood tucked into the mountainside, incorporated into a natural cave system that had been expanded and made comfortable over time without entirely erasing what had originally been there. Warm light spilled from recessed fixtures across stone walls, softening an interior that might otherwise have seemed austere. Shelves held books, datapads, fragments of old research, and the occasional artifact that Seren had determined was safe enough to keep nearby. There were comfortable furnishings rather than the severe trappings of some Sith sanctum, and farther within the cave system lay the garden she had painstakingly nurtured beneath carefully arranged lighting. At its heart rested the Floralite, alive and growing despite the scars that remained along its crystalline petals.

Seren had made no elaborate preparations for her guest. The sitting room had been straightened, a pot of tea waited alongside a second option considerably stronger than tea, and she had moved a few pieces of research from the table so they would actually have somewhere to sit. That seemed sufficient. Malum had asked to meet her, not inspect a royal court, and she had absolutely no intention of pretending her home was anything other than what it was simply because the King of Alvaria was coming to visit.

She had dressed with much the same philosophy. Black trousers disappeared into comfortable boots, accompanied by a dark blue-gray tunic with long sleeves pushed casually to her forearms. Her dark blue-black hair had been left loose, and Voidstar rested nearby rather than at her hip. She knew precisely who was coming. Leaving the weapon within reach was sensible. Wearing it around her own home as though she expected Malum to attack her would have made the invitation rather meaningless.

The notification from the perimeter eventually interrupted the quiet.

Seren glanced toward the small display and saw that a vessel had entered the coordinates she had provided. A faint smile touched her lips. Malum had apparently decided that accepting an invitation to Malachor was a perfectly reasonable way to spend part of his day.

"Well then."

She left the warmth of the sitting room behind and made her way through the passages toward the exterior entrance. The temperature dropped gradually as she approached it, the comfortable warmth of her home surrendering to Malachor's colder air. Seren stepped outside and folded her arms loosely against herself, amber eyes turning toward the distant approach.

Their first meeting had taken place upon the ruins of someone else's history, surrounded by Sith answering a summons and wondering what Darth Malum's return meant for them. This time there would be no audience, no declarations, and no need for either of them to become anything more than two people who had decided they were curious enough to speak again.

Seren found that she preferred it already.

She waited near the entrance to her home, allowing him the courtesy of making his own arrival rather than walking out to meet a ship that had not yet settled. When he eventually reached her, he would find none of the old ceremony awaiting him. No Darth Eryndis. No formal reception for the Lord of House Marr.

Just Seren. And, once he was close enough to hear her, the smallest hint of amusement entered her expression.

"Welcome to Malachor."

The armoured hulk stepped forth from the starfighter. Black steel boots rose higher towards the greaves of similar make, fading into the dark cloth that both covered his legs, along with the free-flowing material that concealed ever so much along his centre. It concealed the plate beneath, as well as providing a form that, bedecked in armour, seemed ever manoeuvrable. A higher gaze would highlight the black plate, set with red rubies that seemed to almost glow in the dark. Broad and heavy, it befitted the man who wore it; flowing along his shoulders and arms were the prominent pauldrons, rerebrace, vambrace and gauntlet. Armoured in different makes, even veritably glowing, in the midst of darkness, he faded from perception.

All leading to the cloak around his shoulders, the hood over his head, a peacock extended its form to show its beauty, for the figure who strode forward.

It was his shadow that was extended - and it was his shadow that he melted into.

For all of it framed that which separated his face from the cool air of Malachor. The mask, a mask that was as ancient as it was recognisable. At least, amongst the Sith.

The face of Darth Marr wore upon the face of his descendant stepped out from the starfighter, descended upon the ruined soil of Malachor, and with steps that were as pronounced as they were deliberate. A masked gaze tilted as it regarded the landscape before him. Wide open plains cast a wide net as far as the nearest horizons, dotted in particularities that drew attention. If only for the lack of anything else. Black soil gave way to rolling hills, to ruins of civilisations long since withered away, echoes that whispered for recipients long since gone. It was the home before him that held the most particularity in this moment, a cave, one which promised much beneath its aegis. Red eyes were hidden beneath the mask, along with all the tales that eyes could tell.

As they locked onto the figure that had provided the invitation.

Pausing a moment in reply to the words she provided, even as the masked gaze angled, in consideration of whom was standing before him. Locking onto the amused expression upon her features.

"It is different from what I remembered." The masked Sith Lord offered.

Seren watched Malum descend from the starfighter without moving to meet him halfway, allowing him the time to take in the world around him. There was something almost appropriate about seeing the ancient mask of Darth Marr against Malachor's bleak horizon, though she suspected the thought would have sounded far too dramatic if spoken aloud. Instead, a faint smile remained upon her lips as he approached, her hands resting loosely at her sides. She had dressed simply for his visit, foregoing anything that might have suggested ceremony in favor of the dark, practical clothing she normally wore at home. This was not an audience between Sith Lords, nor had she invited him here to impress him. It was simply a meeting between two people who had crossed paths under unusual circumstances and decided there might be some value in actually speaking without a crowd surrounding them.

His observation caused Seren's smile to deepen slightly, and she glanced toward the landscape before looking back at that expressionless mask. "Different?" There was genuine curiosity in the question rather than offense. Malachor had been her home long enough that its desolation had become familiar, and she could easily forget how the world appeared through another person's eyes. "Now that is an interesting way to begin. How exactly do you remember it?" She gave him a moment to answer before turning toward the cave entrance behind her, the apparently primitive opening giving little indication of the home concealed farther within.

"Come inside. You came all this way at my invitation, so the least I can do is offer you something more comfortable than standing in Malachor's wind." Seren gestured for him to accompany her, taking the first few steps toward the entrance before glancing back over her shoulder. There was none of the rigid formality she might once have adopted when welcoming a Sith of his standing, nor did she address him by title. He had come to her home because he had asked to meet with her, and she was far more interested in discovering the man behind the mask than exchanging the usual pleasantries between Sith. "Welcome to my home, Malum of House Marr. I promise it becomes considerably less bleak once we're underground."

He paused a moment at her two questions, a silence that lingered over the air, filled only with the wind that blew its haunting melody. He tilted his head towards the woman before him.

"...No different than now, I suppose..." The masked Sith Lord offered with a voice that was as plain in intention as it was in emotion, "...It has been this way for a long while..." He continued, breaking his masked gaze from her to once more look towards the environs surrounding them. Nothing had changed; still as ever, the plains readied out to rolling hills. The soil was as ever black, cracked and twisted, covered with the jagged cliffs the world was known for.

As far above, the storms sailed forth, thunder and lightning echoed in distant rumbles.

Answered by the raucous roar of the Storm Beasts that were this world's only life.

The gaze ceased its motion, seeming to snap into place, towards something far off.

"...Yet, I remember it was different once." He finally let out a breath that resembled a sigh, a weight visibly lifting from his shoulders.

She turned her head, at his answer, an invitation to proceed with her into her abode. He inclined his head,
"...I thank you for your hospitality." He spoke with a hint of warmth passing between concealed thin lips, as he took once more measured steps, following after his host, leaving past the skyline that was thunderous in its wake, to the caverns that held a surprising warmth.

A masked gaze found itself looking into amber depths as she turned to glance back towards him.

"I have no doubt it will." He answered with the same hint of warmth.

Seren caught the small change in him when he spoke of remembering Malachor as something different. It was little more than the release of a breath and the easing of his shoulders, but it drew her attention all the same. She did not press him immediately. Whatever memories he carried belonged to a time well beyond anything she had personally known of the world.

Her amber gaze briefly returned toward the cavern entrance behind them, where distant flashes of lightning still illuminated portions of the blackened landscape. Malachor had looked much the same for as long as Seren had known it. The storms, the cracked earth, the jagged cliffs and the creatures that somehow endured among them were simply part of the world she had chosen to call home.

"I've only ever known it like this." There was curiosity in her voice as she looked back toward him. "Whatever Malachor you remember must have been a very long time ago."

She continued farther into the caverns, allowing the warmth within to gradually replace the chill of the wind outside. Seren had done what she could to make the place comfortable over time. It was still unmistakably a dwelling carved into Malachor, with dark stone surrounding them and the distant rumble of the storms occasionally finding its way through the passages, but there were signs of habitation everywhere. Lights cast a softer glow across the stone, and the furnishings she had accumulated made the chambers feel far less severe than the world beyond them.

His thanks earned a slight shake of her head. "You don't need to thank me. I invited you." There was an easy warmth in her voice as she looked back at him. "Besides, I don't receive many visitors. It would be a rather poor reflection on me if the first thing I did was leave one standing outside with the Storm Beasts."

There was enough humor in the words to make it clear she was teasing him, although the distant roar from somewhere beyond the cavern made the observation somewhat less ridiculous than it otherwise might have been. Seren's smile lingered as she led him farther inside, eventually reaching the portion of the cavern she had made into her main living space.

"Make yourself comfortable." She motioned toward the available seating before moving farther into the room. For all the mystery surrounding the masked man, Seren found herself increasingly curious about the glimpse he had given her outside. He had been here long enough to remember another Malachor, which raised considerably more questions than it answered.

She hesitated only briefly before looking back toward him. "You said you remember when it was different." Her tone remained gentle rather than demanding. "What was it like?"
