Obsidian Blues

Mission: Enos is a popular mining world within the borders of The Confederacy. For years it has helped ship necessary metals through out Confederate Space. Recently one of the mining operations ceased all communications with the outside world. Planetary authorities have been dispatched, yet all investigative parties have ended up missing. The factory under question appears to be functional, as thick plumes of smoke can be seen bellowing out to the skies above. the Enossian Mining Authority has requested the Knight's Obsidian investigate these strange disappearances.

Slinging his bag over his shoulder, Aries made his way through the Enossian spaceport without a second thought. The armor he wore had a faint hue to it, though it was not in combat mode so the myriad of tiny hexagons were dimly lit for the time being. He preferred it that way, the armor was flashy but it ddin't due for him to stand out that much. At least not now while he was trying to keep a low profile.

He could feel the banging headaches he'd been fighting off return and he paused to rub the side of his temple. After making a disgruntled noise he cleared his throat and made his way for the main entrance. The headaches had been appearing ever since he was displaced in time. It felt as if The Force was objecting to his presence in the current time period, but he couldn't be sure. Maybe it was just a side effect of the travel that would fade over time, but he was not so sure. Either way, worrying about it now wouldn't do much good.

It had taken him weeks to enlist himself with the Knight's Obsidian. There was a small bit of tampering done to ensure he would pass the background check, but luckily his father had already thought of that.

Aries pulled a small datapad from his pocket, glancing down at the device with an interested gaze. It had everything he needed. Security codes, access numbers, and even a credit line that he could access without being noticed, for a time at least. His father was an extremely methodical man, so it made since he would keep records of the things that could be used in the future....or in this case, in the past. Aries tucked the datapad back into his pocket before finding his way out of the spaceport. If there was one word Aries could use for Enos, it would be bright. The moment he stepped outside he had to shield his eyes from the suns that burned over the planet's surface. "No wonder this dust ball is so hot." He muttered.

The settlement that the spaceport sat in was fairly small. Aside from the spaceport itself there were only a few more hard structures. Everything else was just a bunch of huts and tents, mostly occupied by merchants trying to sell salvage or the latest shiny rock. Aries glanced around, wondering where his latest "partner" was. It was not quite time for them to meet yet, so he shouldn't expect him just yet.

Tracking down a bit of ore.

Well, a little more than that, but still not Kalporra's definition of fun. She should have been used to it by now, doing the Knights' dull bidding. Maybe tasks were handpicked to be especially so to keep her firmly under their thumb. In control. Still, here's to holding onto hope, but what was she expecting? That they would loosen her leash and let her go dabble in non-state-sanctioned murder again? The Confederacy would have to peter out on the map as their holdings and influence was first for that to happen.

So fat chance.

With a defeatist sigh, Kal uncrossed her legs and kicked them down from the durasteel cafe table. If she had been a very different woman, she might have taken the initiative to seek out the interview the Mining Authority, local police, or both, but she was in the Knights Obsidian for her freedom, not a promotion. There was no hope of living down this plea bargain deal that felt much more like another prison sentence, but should she remain a warden squire forever, that would be just fine by her. So instead, upon arriving at the spaceport ahead of her 'handholder' as she preferred, she had tucked herself away for a nap. It didn't afford her much sleep at all, however.

Wandering outside, hood drawn up as soon as she stepped into the blinding sun, she immediately broke into a sweat. It was hot. Detracted by a figure not too far on in Obsidian strike armor, she dragged her feet to her target. As she neared, she cleared her throat. "I think we have a common interest," she began. "Should we see to it?"

When Kalporra strode up towards Aries, the man did not bother to say anything. The small ripples in the Force that she left as she moved about were enough to tell him that she was who he was looking for. Well, it didn't so much tell him as it hinted towards it vaguely. While Aries senses were naturally not so attuned, his displacement did not seem to be doing him any favors. For the time being he'd prefer to rely on his skill with a lightsaber instead of The Force. He glanced over to the woman, offering a bit of a chuckle when she came forward with such a rigid attitude. She seemed like she wasn't enjoying herself so much, of course who would on this blazing inferno?

"Sure thing." He said, before stepping down the spaceport's steps.

"Didn't think you'd be here already." He said, pulling his datapad from his pocket and glancing down at the screen. "My name's Aries, by the way. Anyway, the log says we should check in with the Port Committee or the Mining Authority to receive an escort and get a statement." He swiped along the screen, contorting his face a bit as he looked over the mission document. "But that sounds like a huge ass waste of time. So how about we just get straight to the factory?" He could not see too much of Kalporra since her hood was drawn over her face, but he had an idea of what the woman's features may be like.

"Come on, we should have a speeder waiting nearby."

Aries led the way deeper into the settlement, however it was only a few moments before they found themselves staring at the massive sea of sand and rock that laid before them. They were able to find the speeder that the Knightly Order had procured for them easily enough. Aries tossed his bag into the back before hopping into the driver's seat. He activated the speeder and in short order they were flying through the dessert. The sands twisted and shot up around them, a mess of it flowing into Aries hair and causing him to screw his face up with agitation. With a press of a button he pulled the canopy over his head and immediately began to swipe the sand from his tawny hair. "So how long have you been with the Knights?" He asked, keeping his eyes on the dessert before them, but allowing her some attention. She didn't seem like she'd necessarily want to chat but sitting in silence was distracting as hell.

The man had a noticeable accent, yet it seemed to be rather muted for the time being. However, with the way words rolled off his tongue it was rather obvious that he was not from one of the more common worlds.

"But that sounds like a huge ass waste of time."

A very audible sigh, a noise that she did not even try to mask, emanated from the squire's lips. Thank the Force Aries was cut from the same cloth as Kal. And that the speeder was built as a two-seater, unlike the last knight's she was assigned to. Altogether it was a much safe contraption, but still she leaned slightly into Aries.

The same burst of rushing air that embedded sand to his hair pushed back Kal's hood. She, though, didn't seem all to bothered about it. She sat back a little once the canopy extended and replied "'Ve lost track." Nothing of the sort, in reality, but she simply didn't care for - not just the number - but the act of recounting it. She wasn't a fan of what it stood for: The time since she had been compelled to trade time in one prison for that in another. A longer, more intense sentence, this one was, but one that didn't necessarily end with the promise of death.

If she was good, that is. The Knights had never sugarcoated that much, so neither did she.

As they sped towards their destination, Aries could tell that his newest partner wasn't much of a talker. Which kind of sucked, because he liked to talk. He didn't say anything for the rest of the ride towards the factory, however when they finally got there the man was relieved to see that there was some presence there. Even for being out in the middle of the barrens, the Factory was actually set in the center of a small settlement. The settlement was made up mostly of housing units and perhaps a small cantina. Although, there were not many people walking around, there were a few people lingering on the outside of the factory.

"Guess we know where to start." He said, climbing out of the speeder. He looked to the people outside of the Factory's electric fence. They were all young and seemed malnourished, still he could not shake the feeling that something else was going on here. He looked up to the Factory and clicked his tongue before making his way to the fence. There were two large Zabrack men standing before the electric fence, they seemed to be security of some kind.

"Hey, stop there." One of the Zabrack called out, stepping forward. The scarlet red alien had a noticeable grimace on his face. Was it because there were obviously two members of the Confederacy's Knight's Obsidian here, or something more?

"What's going on here?" Aries asked, however in the next moment the Force would wash over Aries and Kalporra. It warned them, screaming loudly until the hairs on the back of Aries' neck stood erect.

Danger.

Out of instinct, Aries stepped back, his hand reaching for his lightsaber. The crimson blade came to life as he drew it, lashing out at the Zabrack guard that stood before him. The guard had been reaching for his blaster, hoping to kill Aries before things got too out of hand. Instead, because of Aries' senses, he found his head parted from his body. The other guard yelled out, "Kill them, now!"

Then, the young men and women who had been loitering around the gate, all turned their eyes to the two Knight's. In an instant, all of them drew their blasters, aiming for the two with deadly intent.

Then, the blaster fire started.

She, on the contrary, was more than comfortable with the ensuing silence. The last time she had tried to make conversation with someone, it had not gone her way. He had not been a Knight either, so, as Aries was one, Kal could only imagine her efforts at manipulation and presenting half truths as whole would not blow over half as well - which was still pretty bad. "Ahh...poor kids," she muttered as she walked up behind her partner after getting off the vehicle too. She might have been a killer on Christophsis before her squirehood, but her heart wasn't entirely black. And she had morals, just not the high ground by a long shot.

Kal took a single step back as the Force's warning washed over her. Suddenly, she felt as if she had been knocked off balance, and reached out for Aries' shoulder to break her hallucination of a fall. It was enough to dispel the feeling, a sinking in her stomach, and just in time to witness the unfolding situation before the two. The mounting danger registered almost immediately. To it, Kal responded by twirling behind Aries' back and brandishing her lightwhip there. She found blocking blaster bolts with it quite the challenge, but hopefully Aries had much more accuracy with the task.

The searing hiss of plasma through flesh vibrated through the air. Kal didn't have to look to see what Aries had just done. And then the guard's order came, followed by the clicking of leveled blasters. Great. Kal preferred victims that didn't have time to fight back, but this would have to do to tide over her murderous urges.

"On your left," Kal announced loudly over the blaster fire before inching out of cover to the left and cracking her whip at the remaining guard. The crimson-glowing rope lashed over the alien's torso, instantly carving a meandering squiggle into his body. The charred red burns were almost camouflaged by his dark red skin, but sent him crumpling to the ground nonetheless.

As she whipped her weapon back, it deactivated and Kal discarded in at her feet in favor of drawing the energy bow at her back. She was quick to take aim at one of the young ones, but hesitated to see what Aries would do: Kill them all or keep some alive.

The moment the zabrack's head was parted from his body, they both fell to the dust with a loud thump. As the blaster fire descended upon them, Aries began to retreat from the group that stood before him. They were intending to surround the duo and he could not allow that to happen. His lightsaber came up in fast, erratic movements, keeping the blaster fire from slamming into his body. He kept close to Kalporra as she drew her lightwhip. For a few moments, he kept her safe from the blaster fire, until her own weapon lashed out. That was when he made his move.

While Kalporra struck out, Aries did the same. He quickly closed the distance between himself and one of the younger men. These stand-ins had been tactically placed to kill anyone who came to this area.

But why? He mused, unsure of just what was going on.

Child or not, he did not hesitate to sever the boy's head from his shoulders. There was another who charged Aries with a vibroknife, but Aries quickly allowed his lightsaber to slice across the young girl's wrist. His left hand flew forward, the Force exploded out from him and her body was sent flying into the side of the electric fence that protected the facility. Her screams yelled out and the longer he held her there the more her body seemed to cook against the electric relays. When he finally released her, she fell back down to the ground, a charred husk.

Aries kept his blade close to his chest, however his eyes scanned all that surrounded him. "Well....warm welcome." He muttered, before finally deactivating the blade in his hand. As the crimson blade extinguished itself back into the emitter, Aries turned his eyes back to the complex before them. It seemed as if there were no others around, yet there was something off about this place. He kept his lightsaber in his hand and made his way towards the massive factory-like building. He looked back to Kalporra, gesturing to the bow and light whip she used. "Never seen those in action before. At least they're unconventional." He said, before running a hand through his hair.

When they made it to the main door, Aries' chocolate eyes swept over the flat surface with an arched brow. "Half expected more security to come out." He pressed his hand to the door, closing his eyes slightly while focusing on the shifting nether of the Force. The Dark Side flowed freely from this place, and yet it still brought him some manner of clarity. He could see all of the tiny lines that made up all that was before him. There were so many thousands, so many millions that sweat bled from his brow just by focusing on it. "Knock....knock...."

The door began to break away, as if it had been a piece of glass. Every piece of the durasteel frame crumbled onto the ground beneath them. Aries let out a deep exhale, his eyes showing a small bit of exhaustion from using the shatterpoint ability that his father had taught him as a young boy.

"Come on." He led the way into a hall bathed in darkness. It was so devoid of light that even the sun that swept in from the entrance could do nothing to show the path before them. This set Aries on ease, but there was one thing that brought him some closure.

As the snap-hiss of his lightsaber erupted, the long, winding hall, coated in durasteel revealed itself. And there was something exceptionally disturbing about it.

From the beginning of the hall to the end, was coated in blood. "Not....not what I was hoping for." Aries muttered.

. . .

Not even a moment after she realized they were taking no prisoners, she loosed her arrow. It plunged just above a young man's heart, felling his instantly as he ran at the freed convict. With that, the clash concluded. Kal rose a hand, making the energized arrow's purple light flicker out, dislodge itself, and fly into her glove. After returning it back into her quiver, she stooped to rewind her whip and hook in again to her belt. She shrugged. "I like unconventional," she said, moving to step over the boy's body. That much was entirely true. By choosing to wield weapons most Knights did not, Kalporra was able to rebel against the order in her own, however quiet, way.

Rocking the boat without capsizing it.

"I'm Kal," she offered simply as she walked past him up to the factory's entrance as if she had just met him, or just nonchalant that she had gone this long without making an introduction. "Yeah, I did too." Quietly, she waited as Aries preformed shatterpoint, arms crossed, watching on half the time and scanning around them for more trouble the other. Only when she was beckoned to did she move.

Once in the hall, Kal took to walking slightly behind the knighted Warden. A bit of the light of his saber ignited as a torch lit up one side of her face. The scene around them equal parts unsettled and resettled her. Something had evidently happened here, horrific and dark, in this hall of evil. She welcomed the weight of the obvious, a massacre of some kind, but simultaneously recoiled from the suggestion. Someone else had done this. She had just entered a killer's den that wasn't her own.

Call it her competitive side, but the disgust overtook her.

"Not good," she replied, sidestepping to avoid a dripping glop of blood. "I'm assuming the workers'?" It wasn't really a question, but still inflected like one. It certainly wasn't the ores'. Closing her eyes, she reached out ahead of them. Even in her mind's eye, she couldn't find the stamina to search much further in the maze of halls than they currently had. But, in that short distance, she felt no life, just the proof of its snuffing on the walls.

Once things had settled down, Aries looked to Kalporra with a nod. "Unconventional is the best way to operate." He agreed. He did, even as one of the Illyrian Knights he did not find conventional methods conducive to completing his tasks. Somethings were best fixed by throwing all you had at it as well you could, not-

So her name was Kal.

Even Aries couldn't help but smile at that. "Good to meet you." He wondered if she would ever tell him her name. Quite honestly by now he was leaning towards the no side of things. The two moved down the bloody hall and Aries couldn't help but turn his nose up at the display. He allowed a gloved hand to run over the gooey liquid, muttering just loud enough for Kal to hear him. "Yea...Look's pretty fresh too..." He muttered. He glanced down the hall and bit the bottom of his lip while he tried to piece it together. There wasn't enough to go off of, not just yet.

"Most buildings like this have some type of a security room or something. Let's see if we can find one, it might have-"

A loud banging sound erupted down the hall, causing the Knight's eyes to rise to meet the darkness. Again and again the banging came from down the hall and each time it sounded louder than the last time. Aries held his blade up, leveling it into the darkness as the sound grew closer and closer.

"Kal..." He said, knowing that she had to have been hearing the same thing he was.

Kal hummed her assent to both of Aries’ assertations – the blood and the security room – the last cut off as the sudden banging startled her a step backward. She was quick to recover, though, and even quicker to train her eyes on the sound’s source. Either she missed a sign of life during Force Sense or whatever was causing the disturbance was not organic.

At this point, either were reasonable options. She had learned to commune much better with the Force since a stay of execution, but by no stretch of her own imagination was she a Master of even the simplest techniques. So she nudged her way past Aries, drawing an arrow when clear of him. From here, she could tell what was being banged on was a door. “Open it from here,” she said lowly, closing one eye, stilling her breath, and focusing her aim. “Slow.

A golden, misshaped droid stood on its hind legs. It looked like a CIS CDF chameleon droid, a mine layer, but that didn’t belong here…unless the model had been refurbished into a spelunker of some kind. With a twist of the rounded fletching, electricity erupted down the shaft. As she shot it into the venerable neck area, Kal backpedaled. The droid had dropped back to four legs and was already meters down the hall, making startlingly fast progress, before it began to spasm. Crackles danced across its body and down its limbs, though it continued down its predetermined path. Finally, the eyes dimmed, then died completely, but the thing’s momentum allowed in to travel just a bit more before its legs collapsed underneath it.

Kal was halfway through nocking again. She couldn’t help but yelp, relived more than terrified anymore. “Force be still; what the feth!” Again, she retrieved her spent arrow. Strange, they had been reasonably effective in training against droids before. “We gotta get out of this murder box.” It was much funnier an experience when one was in the droid’s shoes.

Well – Kal cast a fleeting glance back at the smoking heap as she followed wherever Aries thought to lead – maybe not quite…

The fast walk, almost-jog, through the facility’s lobby thankfully did not involve any more provocation. Likewise, the place had an effective labeling and direction system, even if it was more often than not under thick plasm. Kal’s gloves were soaked with the bodily liquid by the end of the venture from whipping down various plaques. Just to find the one door they actually wanted had been unautomated manually. With an annoyed sigh, she dropped her arms she had been waving to wake up the sensors located in the frame above and rolled her eyes to Aries. “Can you do the…” she waved a hand again, trying to insinuate shatterpoint, “thing again?

Like Kalporra, Aries was uncertain of just what it was that was making that sound. He could not sense anything coming from the hall, however he knew what he was hearing was real and could not be an illusion. Even the red hue that came from Aries' lightsaber was unable to pierce through the darkness, so his eyes had no chance. Once they could see the door, Kalporra gave the hint to open the door. Aries glanced over to her, uncertainly before he raised his hand towards the door. Once it snapped open, Aries could not help but curse softly underneath his breath. Kal fired one of her arrows through the darkness and it slammed into the droid's neck. The large metallic creature seized before slamming into the ground below. Hard and final, the loud bang seemed to reverberate through out the entire complex.

They moved through the halls and down the lobby, keeping their eyes locked on what laid before them. The winding halls of the complex were labeled, and though they had to part the blood and gore from the words, it came in handy. When they finally found themselves at another of the sealed door's, Aries exhaled once more. "I don't get why an old mining droid is running around killing people....not that anything else here is making sense." He huffed.

Kal asked if he could use his shatterpoint once again, though she mentioned it in a peculiar way. "Shatterpoint, yea I should be able to." He told her, before deactivating his lightsaber and making his way towards the door. He pushed both of his hands onto the door, closing his eyes as he let out a deep exhale.

"Search for the faults....the faults that the Force did not fill." He muttered to himself, recalling how to utilize the technique.

"Then....push." Aries pushed out with the Force and once again, the door fell to pieces just like the first one did. The metallic door pieces fell to the ground, each one adding to the small pile of rubble underneath. However, it was what laid behind the door that caused the blood to flee from his face.

"Run...." He muttered before pushing back on Kal. "Run!"

The metallic machines burst from the doorway, each one larger than the one they had seen before. Aries growled angrily as he tried to move down the halls, gathering the Force within him. "What the hell are these things!?" He yelled out, before turning on a heel and letting the Force explode from him once again. Long crystal blue streaks of lightning flew from his fingertips, slamming into the droid's bodies and causing them to seize against the power of his Force Lightning. "I can't hold them for long!" He yelled out over the lashing streaks of lightning.

. . .

Persistent little buggers.

What could have happened to them? A question for a calmer moment. For now? Run.

Kal didn’t have to be told twice. She started back off in the way they had come, sure not leave Aries too far behind. So when he stopped to zap the metal herd, Kal didn’t hesitate to as well. She barely kept the annoyed question of what he expected her to do on her tongue, laid flat behind her clenched teeth. Instead, she took to scanning over the environment. Not doors she might be able to close, nothing to otherwise block their way, and nowhere to hide nearby. She was about to admit defeat when her eyes met the ceiling directly above the droids. Vent grates. The opening didn’t look big enough for one humanoid, let alone two, but that was alright by her. That was so cliché-action-holovid, anyway.

But, could the chameleons climb? The wonder hadn’t even passed through Kalporra’s mind in entirety before she dismissed the notion. It was no use to stand here curious, useless. Unwinding the steel whip from her belt, careful not to activate it, she wound back and threw. The end wrapped around one of the rungs. She let go of the handle, looping the rope loosely around her hand and choking up with the other. “Cut it out,” she told him. Her tact needed a lot of work even though not wanting to get shocked by an ally was an understandable request.

There wasn’t much room for a run up, but the space would have to do. Less than a meter away from first droid, the squire leaped and tugged on the light whip. A boost from the Force and Kal took to wall running a ways until the grate gave way with an echoing bang. She slipped in a swipe of red and was sent tumbling onto the ground. She landed on her side, just missing the last of the droids. The impact was jarring, but adrenaline coaxed her to ignore it just in time to roll out of the way of two pointed legs coming down where she had been seconds before.

Kal pushed herself up on a knee and twirled around, anticipating the next blow, to see that the droid’s head had pivoted on its torso. Oh, Void. She rolled to the side, out of range at again the last moment, then stood and stumbled back. Giving her dominant hand a few flicks to get off the whip, she activated it once on the floor, and let it lick across some of their aggressors.

And like that, the second wave was finished. Kal gave a roll of her shoulders to loosen them. “Your guess is as good as mine.” An offhand shrug followed and then a pained grimace as she rubbed her side. She really had to learn to absorb landing shock if she was going to do that regularly.

Although Aries had studied the Force since he was a young child, the Dark Side was still mostly a mystery to him. He could gather it and force it to explode out from his rage, but it was not yet an endless well that he could draw from. He hesitated as Kal told him to end his Force Lightning. Truth be told, he didn't have much longer that he could keep the skill up without really causing some problems. So he did as she bid and broke the connection, throwing himself back from the droids as Kal maneuvered around them. Though her landing was faulty, her plan seemed to work without too much cause for concern. Once the last droid's were sent to the ground, lifelessly, Aries exhaled a bit. His head was swimming from his overexertion in the Force and it felt as if he would pass out if he was not careful.

Once the uproar had settle down, Aries finally started towards Kal once again. He passed one of the droids, some faint glint catching his eyes as he did. He barely noticed it, however it had been oddly out of place. Most of the droid's appendages seemed abused and overused. They were in bad need of maintenance, most of their metallic frames were rusted and dented. all except for the tips of their main appendages, those tips were still shining bright as if they had barely been used.

Aries gazed at the tips, bending down and running a hand over the appendage. "Beskar...." He muttered. He looked back up to the droids, taking note of the mandible-like torches attached to the metallic beasts. "These are mining droids." Originally Aries had thought these droids had been sicked on the complex, perhaps to destroy the industry here, however now it was appearing that they had not been sent to this place, instead they came from it. He recognized the droids, as they were low-tier versions of the type of droids his family used to mine the Phrik deposits on Illyria.

There was still no explanation as to why these droids seemed intent on murdering everything in their path, however they had at least reached the inner workings of the complex. "Come on, the security room has to be around here somewhere. Once we find out what happened, maybe we can figure out why it happened."

// Tag: [member="Aries Creed"] \\
. . .

Kal squatted down to join Aries when he did. Mining droids? Maybe her assessment was somewhat backwards: maybe he's guess was worth more than her's. She cast a symbolic glance around before focusing back on him and the droids. This was a factory after all. "Sure," she offered hollowly. She wasn't certain if she was upset she hadn't come to the conclusion first or just speaking up to offer some meaningless agreement. "Occam's razor 'n all."

She got up first, offering help if it was needed. A small portion of the floor was now about as slick as the walls thanks to Kalporra's flail. This way, she seemed to say with a slight jerk of her head behind her. They had gotten a little turned around by the entertainment, but she remembered this being the way.

The inside of the security room, minutes before a sardine can filled with the wrong kind of murder, the kind in which the murderess was threatened, the mess found throughout the floor continued. The droids might have been left in a heap through the labyrinth somewhere, but evidence of their once being here was aplenty. Blood was smeared on the walls by both hands and those beskar skewers that scraped into the metal as well. The corpse of a security officer sat sagged in the corner opposite the shattered door and furthest away from the console setup. Kal first went to the body, soon finding that she had to pull her hood's attached face mask over her nose and hold it there, for the material was too sheer to block out the smell. But still, her hand could not do that. The guard had been impaled twice, wounds that had long since stopped weeping but were still reasonably fresh of decay though livor mortis had clearly set in. A quick glance around confirmed that the room had been effectively sealed off.

Without maggots, a body still smelled pretty bad - maybe not worse, but pretty bad, and this was precisely why she had always been quick to clean up after herself. "Gah...!" Hopefully, more would be gleaned from what left of the logs, not to mention the air was just a little fresher over there - excepting the ever-present metallic taint - but first... "Please tell me that computer's unlocked."

Evidently not.

Inching closer to the guard before she squatted and reached over, his holographic ID card came off his belt with a soft click. She stood, wiped the blood off on her sleeve, and tossed it over with a, "'Heads," muttered in warning.
