Obliterator Class Bombardment Corvette

Designed in some ways as a replacement or crossgrade of the old Fulminatus Corvette, the Obliterator was designed to give Firemane a good ground bombardment option. During Firemane’s campaign on Tephrike they found they lacked very good options for orbitally bombarding enemy positions with precision. Turbolasers and even individual bombers lacked the co-ordinated accuracy required to minimise civilian or undesirable target destruction.
There for using the Deathstrike missiles usually employed on bombers, the Obliterator has the equivalent of 2 Judgement Class squadrons worth of launchers. These can direct accurate, devastating and long ranged fire from the atmosphere to the ground. However, in a space battle it can also prove useful by firing volleys of missiles at enemy capital ships in a way which is hard to block. This, especially if the corvette can use its speed to get into a blind or weak spot allows it to do potentially massive damage to the enemy ship very quickly.
The key weakness is the same as its strength. The missiles, 128 in all, are stored in the ship itself. Despite precautions to keep them safe a single accurate penetrating shot in the right place can spark a chain reaction which can shatter the corvette like a firecracker. This is especially true as the ship needs to ‘rear up’ and show its belly mounted launchers to an enemy ship it is firing upon. Further, with only limited defence guns the Obliterator needs to be protected and escorted to prevent enemy bombers or escorts attacking it.

- Bombardment. The Obliterator is a terror against ground targets. Anything not beneath a secure orbital shield will quite likely be turned to rubble by the massed targeted missiles of the corvette.
- Onslaught. The Obliterator can also turn its missiles against enemy capital ships by rearing up and launching volleys into the target. This has the firepower of 2 squadrons of bombers, so cannot be underestimated!
- Combustible. With so many very explosive missiles on board in such a narrow space, the ship needs to avoid heavy enemy fire. One misplaced explosion will turn the ship into a giant firecracker.
- Defences. Despite being armed like a bomber the Obliterator ironically needs to fear enemy bombers and fighters as it has limited defence guns. Escorts and support are vitally important.
