The microscope never hurried. I had always appreciated that about it. Politics demanded immediate answers. Governments rewarded confidence even when certainty was absent. But a microscope asked for only one thing: patience. It did not care who held office, who commanded fleets, or whose banners flew above a city. It simply revealed whatever had always been there, provided the observer was willing to look closely enough.
I adjusted the focus wheel ever so slightly. The thin slice of soil beneath the lens resolved into remarkable clarity. Tiny mineral structures emerged first, followed by dormant microbial colonies that had survived conditions harsher than most civilizations ever would. Scar World samples continued to surprise me. Even after catastrophic ecological collapse, life had found ways to persist. It was quieter. Slower. But not gone.
A small smile found it's way onto my face. "You're far more resilient than anyone gave you credit for," I murmured, making another notation on the datapad resting beside the microscope.
The laboratory around me remained comfortably familiar. Shelves lined with carefully labeled specimen containers stretched along one wall, while environmental monitors quietly tracked temperature, humidity, and atmospheric composition with the sort of diligence only machines truly enjoyed. The faint scent of sterilizing solution lingered in the filtered air, accompanied by the gentle hum of refrigeration units preserving hundreds of samples collected from worlds scattered across the galaxy. Some represented healthy ecosystems. Others had been taken from places most people had long since abandoned.
To me, they were all chapters of the same story. Life adapting. Life enduring. Life waiting for someone to understand it.
Near the far side of the laboratory sat a glass terrarium no larger than a travel case. Inside, my little biomass companion had become thoroughly occupied with it's own experiment. A handful of insects had been introduced earlier that morning, and it had spent the better part of an hour observing them before deciding that observation alone was insufficient. Now it was consuming them.
Each successful hunt was followed by another curious transformation. Small chitinous ridges briefly appeared along it's shoulders before fading again. Tiny hooked claws emerged for several moments as it climbed across a smooth branch with considerably greater confidence than before. Even it's large, curious eyes seemed to adjust ever so slightly as it examined it's surroundings.
I rested my chin lightly against one hand while watching it for a moment. "You know," I said thoughtfully, "your enclosure is becoming rather too small for this sort of research."
The little creature paused mid-climb before looking back toward me. It chirped once.
I smiled. "I know. I'll build you a larger one."
The promise seemed satisfactory enough. It resumed investigating the insects with renewed enthusiasm.
Returning my attention to the microscope, I carefully transferred another minute portion of soil onto a fresh slide. My latest work had become increasingly focused on understanding how biomolecules interacted with damaged ecosystems at the microbial level. Most people imagined terraforming as forests appearing where deserts once stood. They rarely considered that the first step toward restoring a world often began with organisms too small to see.
Outside these laboratory walls, the galaxy continued arguing over borders, governments, and wars. While inside, none of that seemed particularly important. Here, the only questions worth asking were whether dead soil could be taught to live again, and what it might take to convince a broken world that it still deserved to.
