Dobb was yelling for them to stop even as Aver watched her opponent sway on the spot with a thousand-yard stare.
Well, they were stopped, alright. Sam’s brain looked to be bouncing around the inside of her skull, still. At least her guard was up at last. Small victories.
The return to earth was a slow process: narrowed pupils, even breaths, muscle tension. Aver let it happen; felt the shlick of a slipped joint sinking back home reverberate up the arm she held in her grasp.
Soon as it was done, she let go and made a throat cutting motion at the bookie. Bout over, whining crowd be damned.
“I’m hungry,” Aver announced, more to Dobb than Sam. Unlikely the latter was listening. “Know a great hot dog place up the block. My treat.”
