No Plan Survives Contact (Calina)

"Miss Djo?"

The door closed gently behind Will. Out through the panoramic windows of [member="Calina Djo"] 's suite, another Sith warship rose from underneath the city. Skyscrapers sloughed off like sand. Somehow, during the era of the One Sith, warships had been constructed in the foundations of the planet-wide city, in anticipation of a day like today. Maurice hissed nervously and twined around Will's arm rather than sticking to his role as a stylish cane.

"Miss Djo, are you here? I brought you another taozin amulet. The Sith are on the planet, and we need to talk about options. Miss Djo...?"

The lights had gone out shortly after the first warship had emerged, plunging her suite into semi darkness, illuminated now only by the flashes of the battle outside her window and the fading light of the planet. She emerged from the edge of the room, silver cylinder vanishing back up her sleeve once she was certain it was Willard and no one else who had entered.

"I'm here." she tried to exude the confidence that came with the persona she'd mastered so well, but in the face of her ally and with the enemy quite literally on her doorstep, she failed, her wavering voice barely above a whisper. She cleared her throat, shook herself and approached with a hand extended for the amulet.

"What do we know?" she asked, her voice clearer. Better, she thought.

"Relatively little. Fog of war and so forth. I suspect, though, that we're looking at a raid writ large rather than an invasion."

He crossed the suite in the gloom and offered her the taozin amulet.

"I suspect that because the Sith have a huge, entrenched territory elsewhere, and they wouldn't want to project their power this far afield permanently. This is opportunism lined up with the Alliance's current state of unrest. And, of course, I've seen no real evidence of the Sith landing armies, though it's a big planet. No, they seem to be here to spread fear and destroy what they can. I'm told the Alliance's new supercommand ship has just exploded in orbit. Given the Sith Empire's history, it's unlikely but very possible that they'll commence wholesale orbital bombardment and burn the planet. I'm here to escort you offworld in case that possibility becomes reality."

Calina blinked, taking the amulet in her hand and closing her hand around it briefly. "Wonderful." she replied sarcastically, before slipping the amulet around her neck and striding across the room to collect her coat. The fact that she was not being looked for gave them the advantage, but they still had chaos to contend with to reach a ship.

And if they were fortunate to get off the ground without too much of a problem, then whatever was in space would, no doubt take up opportunity to spread further fear attacking a civilian vessel. Suddenly her fear was lower priority. Survive first, then she could cry into her pillow later about how terrified she actually was.

"We can discuss destination, relocation and whatever else you have in -" the floor trembled beneath them, fingers seized Willard's upper arm.

The floor tilted abruptly. Windows shattered. Willard snagged the nearest grabbable thing, which turned out to be the post of Calina's bed, and held his balance with effort. "Agreed," he said. He whistled just so, and Maurice slithered up his arm to form a rigid staff with a hooked end. Willard let go of the bedpost, reached out, and snared the door. He did his level best not to think of the multi-hundred-metre fall that the building might take sooner rather than later.

A section of wall crumbled away, revealing a small chrome ship. "You recall I said I would provide you with a Santhe Challenger. I apologize for the delay."

The little ship's canopy opened, and a pilot droid pulled it alongside, within easy jumping distance for a Sith. Less so for a Yuuzhan Vong, but he could make do. Probably.

"After you, Miss Djo."

Calina let out a nervous laugh. "Apology accepted, Mr Jamaaane." She didn't hesitate, releasing her grip on Willard's arm she stumbled slightly before delicate applications of the force enhanced her balance and she leapt from the steadily tilting floor, feet landing lightly on the canopies edge, turning on her toes to face back towards the yuuzhan vong.

Out of the corner of her eye, three building along were beginning to domino, the noise of shattering glass, grinding metal and crumbling 'crete audible over the ship engines.

"Quickly!"

The floor crumbled under Will's final running step, and his heart lurched in his throat. He swung Maurice high, and the seven-foot amphistaff hooked the edge of the Challenger's cockpit. Will hung there under the chrome ship, dangling above a cityscape on the verge of collapse. Crossbreeze made him sway as he pulled himself hand-over-hand up Maurice's body. The snake had no idea what was going on, but kept doing what Will asked him to do. "Good boy," Will murmured, dragging himself up into the cockpit. "Good boy, Maurice."

Maurice the amphistaff coiled up in his lap and hissed contentedly. It barely budged when he activated the force-field restraint belt. Only then did Will let out a shaky breath and pat the pilot droid on the shoulder. "We're away, Beetee."

The cockpit sealed shut, insulating Will and Calina from the staggering noise and the wind. The Challenger zipped away, heading for the sky. A ship this small and fast had a decent chance of making it past the battle; orbit was a very large place. Even so...

"If you're up to it, Miss Djo, perhaps some kind of supernatural concealment is in order."
