OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a predatory species native to Cuauhtlah that are analogous to large jungle cats.
  • Canon: N/A
  • Links: Nexu
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Nexulatl
  • Designation: Non-Sentient
  • Origins: Cuauhtlah
  • Average Lifespan: 12-15 GSY
  • Estimated Population: Planetary
  • Description: The nexulatl are a slightly smaller cousin to the more well-known nexu felines of Cholganna. They are more adapted to the tropical jungles of Cuauhtlah. They possess a different pattern of fur, sport a tawny-gold with black splotches across it. They have also become a revered part of the native culture.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type I
  • Average Height of Adults: 0.63 Meters at the shoulder (average)
  • Average Length of Adults: 1.49 Meters (snout to base of tail), with the tail becoming as long as an additonal 0.61 Meters on average.
  • Skin color: A typical specimen will have blackish flesh on its lips, and a pinkish, fleshy, hairless tail.
  • Hair color: Nexulatl have a fur pattern that is a golden-tawny on the dorsal side of the body, whitish on the ventral areas, and covered in blotchy black spots. On occasion, there individuals born with recessive traits that cause full-on black fur.
  • Distinctions: There are only a few traits that differentiate them from their nexu forebears. Firstly, instead of four eyes, nexulatl only have two eyes, which come in a range of greenish-yellow to golden instead of red. Their fur pattern, as detailed above, differs greatly from the striped white fur of baseline nexus. Additionally, instead of the forked tail typical of their ancestors, nexulatl have a straight tail. Lastly, they are much smaller than their kin.
  • Races: None
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-Sensitive
Strengths:
  • The Walking Cutlery: Like their nexu cousins, nexulatl are a walking set of sharp and pointy appendages. Be it their rows upon rows of sharp teeth, or ripping claws, they will easily wound and maim unsuspecting prey who come unarmored.
  • Camouflage: The fur pattern of a nexulatl grants a degree of camouflage in the dense flora and shadows of the jungle. It would take a trained eye to notice one hiding in plain sight.
Weaknesses:
  • Easily Dead: Nexulatl are not any more armored or shielded than base line nexu. Blaster fire and even basic sharp weapons are going to wound one. Anyone with any basic survival or hunting skills could defend themselves from a nexulatl.
  • Easily Tired: One thing that nexulatl share with baseline nexu is that they prefer to end any confrontation as quickly as possible. They succumb to exhaustion quickly if prey are able to out maneuver them. This will likely either result in the nexulatl passing out from exhaustion, or simply retreat, as something so bothersome would not be worth wasting more energy.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivorous
  • Communication: Growls, snarls, hisses, trilling....typical wild feline communication
  • Technology level: Nexulatl are animals - they have no technological achievement.
  • Religion/Beliefs: No religious beliefs. Again, they're animals.
  • General behavior: Nexulatl are solitary hunters, preferring to stalk down prey and kill it, but are not above scavenging either. For the most part, they keep to themselves, patrolling a territory that is marked as their own, usually near a tree that allows them to observe for prey or challengers to their territorial claims. The only true time nexulatl are not solitary is during mating season. Once a pair has mated, the female will drive the mate away, leaving her to rear cubs alone. A typical litter is two cubs, but three or four are not unheard of. As the cubs are growing, females will not tolerate the presence of males, as male nexulatl are known to dispose of cubs that are not genetically his in order to make sure his genes are passed on. Once the cubs are grown, they will leave their mother to establish territories of their own.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The genesis of the nexulatl species is simple enough. A criminal ship carrying a shipment of nexu for gladitorial and criminal guard beasts had landed upon the surface of Cuauhtlah to evade the authorities, who had feared going into the Unknown Regions because of the lack of knowledgeable star charts at the time. However, the smugglers were not prepared to face the dangers of the jungle. The smugglers soon succumbed to the harshness of the wild, eventually having to face a tribe of hostile Tlaltecs. During the tussle, the nexu got loose into the jungle.

While initially an invasive species, the nexulatl forebears were backed into an evolutionary corner when having to compete with the native humans and prey that was much smaller than the typical nexu fare. Some died out, but those who did not eventually evolved into the nexulatl and integrated into the native food chain. Their visciousness and cunning was adopted as a symbol for the native Tlaltecs, who named the most elite of their warriors as the Nexulatl Guard.

Regarding events such as the Gulag Plague and the Netherworld, the nexulatl were not phased by it. Yes, their populations were affected, but seeing as they were not a societal or event sentient, no psychological impact has occurred. They thinmed out the population that has since bounced back.
