Model: Netherbane Cube
Modularity: No.
Production: Semi-Unique
Material: Materials: Alchemised durasteel, charged Force focusing crystals and attuned focusing lense, infused alchemised aurodium engraved with magic runes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Can ensnare and trap ghosts, spirits and similar noncorporeal entities.
  • Alchemised.
  • Multiple devices can amplify their range and power when active together.
STRENGTHS
  • The device has one job: trapping ghosts, spirits and such for the purpose of containment, interrogation and experimentation. Or simply to clear out a localised ghost infestation. It does that job well. To this end the box pulls spirits into it. It is like draining a sink of water, but with transparent ghosts. If successful, they are sucked into the whirlpool like vortex and trapped. The runes and wards keep them from escaping. Multiple devices can amplify their range and power when active together.
  • The alchemisation process and the wards involved make it very resilient to damage, even from lightsabres and high grade explosives.
WEAKNESSES
  • While the device is better at trapping and containing chaff than very powerful spirits. The Force Ghost of say a Jedi Master is very unlikely to be contained by it.
  • Similarly, the device was designed with ghosts in mind because those are the spirits Sibylla is familiar with and most likely to encounter. Unconventional spirit beings such as Shadows, who are literally made from the Nether, are far more resilient. Shades, being lesser Shadows, are still vulnerable though due to being less advanced.
  • While the inventor of the device is clearly evil, the device itself can theoretically be used for non-evil purposes, such as clearing out malevolent spirits who are haunting and tormenting innocent people. However, the design process included Sith alchemy and as such strong blasts of Force Light can damage or disrupt it.
  • Force null zones. Being in a Ysalamiri field will prevent the device from activating though not automatically release the spirits since they too are rendered inert. Voidstone does not prevent activation or use of the device, but dampens range and efficacy, with the effect being dependent on proximity. Of course, it will also affect any ghosts.
DESCRIPTION

In their bid to subjugate all of Tephrike under the boot of 'glorious mankind', the Disciples of the Vader and the 'Greater Sith Imperium' ruled by them have committed all manners of atrocities. Non-human civilian populations are their primary victims. Entire settlements and cities have been wiped, millions have been deported and murdered in camps. Slaves are worked to death in forced labour camps, plantations and on grandiose construction projects. The bodies of the dead are burnt in crematoria or carelessly dumped into pits of bone. The Vaderites build settlements for 'worthy humans' on top the ruins of alien cities as well as dismantled concentration camps. They call this civilisation.

But the dead do not rest easily. Such barbaric acts have consequences, birthing nexi fuelled by the anger of those who were murdered...and they strike back. Hauntings are a pervasive problem, especially on Chios, whose alien population was subjected to a barbaric genocide. Sentinel's Rest, a town built upon the ruins of a Togruta town and a dismantled death camp, has been hit by a series of...psychic incidents. Human settlers turned catatonic, their faces contorted into expressions of agony; perpepetrators of the genocide committing suicide; settlers suddenly disappearing into the haunted forest, never to be seen again. Because this doesn't fit the narrative, Vaderites are inclined to downplay the problem or brutally lash out. Often by blaming vile xenos sorcery and rounding up the usual suspects for murder.

Sibylla Laskaris, apprentice of the Butcher of Chios, sees things differently. Life to her is an intellectual thought experiment. The Vaderites' Humanist ideology is illogical, and the way the Imperium treats its xenos forced labourers is...wasteful. Wasteful, not evil. Morality doesn't factor in her thought processes. The xenos represent a solution for the Imperium's labour crisis, but they must be harnessed through the machine, not commanded through the whip. Their life force, bound through the Force, can power machines.

Besides, someone needs to do something productive about these hauntings. Nicknamed the box, the Netherbane Cube is just a prototype, but represents an initial proof-of-concept for her project. Its immediate purpose is to trap ghosts in order to facilitate containment, and experimentation. To this end the box pulls spirits into it. It is like draining a sink of water, but with transparent ghosts. If successful, they are sucked into the whirlpool like vortex and trapped. The runes and wards keep them from escaping. It can clear out a localised ghost infestation, say in a building, but lacks the range and power to deal with a full-scale nexus or a city-wide outbreak. The device was first utilised in a hotel in Sentinel's Rest that was being assailed by the vengeful spirits of the dead.
