GENERAL INFORMATION
Name: The Nesmite, “demon” tree
Origins: Somov Rit
Other Locations: This type of tree can be found on a lot of planets that have a swampy, marsh covered ecosystem.
Classification: Tree
Average Growth Cycle: It takes 15-20 years for one of these Nesmite trees to fully mature. The way these trees start to grow is extremely interesting to observe. The fruit, which become seed pods once they die and harden, will explode once they are struck or drop to the ground. Inside, their hard, flat seeds can be shot out in a circular radius of 40 or more meters. Those seeds that land on the ground can then take root, and with a large amount of water and sunlight, begin to grow deep roots and sprout.
Viability: This type of tree needs an extreme amount of water to survive, along with a large amount of sunlight. This is why you really only see these trees in swamp or marsh ecosystems, where they can be provided with the 20 to 30 inches of rain or water a month that they need. They also need days worth of sunlight to grow, and without both of these things, the fruit that eventually become seed pods will not grow, not allowing the tree to reproduce.
Description: The “demon” tree has earned that name for a reason. All up and down is light brown bark are tiny, hooked spikes that are plenty enough to cause bleeding to a normal sentient being. The tree evolved with this defense to discourage any herabavors from climbing it and eating the fruit before they turn into the seed pods. The fruit look like tiny, greenish yellow pumpkins, then turn a deep brown with black spots when they’ve matured into the seed pod stage. Nesmite’s also don’t have any sort of leaves, with the only things hanging on the branches being the fruit/seed pods.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Average Height: 50m-55m tall
Average Length: 2m-3m wide
Color: The tree trunk is a light brown, while the spikes that run up and down it’s truck are a deeper brown, almost black, color. The seed pods are a light green to yellow, and once they turn into seed pods, deeper brown with black spots.
Nutritional Value: None.
Toxicity: The sap of this tree is moderately poisonous. If it comes into contact with bare skin, it can cause nasty rashes and blisters, one’s that can pop and bleed if scratched at enough. The sap can also cause temporary blindness if applied to the eyes.
Other Effects: As dangerous as this tree is, there are one or two healing properties to this tree. If the sap is collected safely, it can then be boiled, and then used as a drink to cure an upset stomach. The seeds, once collected from an exploded seed pod, may also be ground up and chewed on in the mouth to cure a toothache.
Distinctions: It is not hard to distinguish the Nesmite, “demon” tree from any other types of trees around. One would probably hear the Nesmite, or, more so, it’s exploding seed pods, much sooner than it would actually see the tree itself. The seed pods are extremely sensitive to being struck, whether that be being hit or them falling and hitting the ground/water that the tree is rooted in. The hooked barbs that run up and down the tree trunk also give the Nesmite tree a very distinctive look.

Strengths:
Some healthy qualities: Despite how harmful, and sometimes, deadly, this tree can be, there are some decently healthy products it can produce. Whether or not they’re worth braving the dangers this tree provides is up to the collector.
Warning sounds: These trees really aren’t that hard to avoid. They have a very distinctive look, and the sounds of exploding seed pods can be easily heard from quite a distance away.

Weaknesses:
Stay far away: It is good practice to stay at least 60 feet away from this tree at all times. If a seed pod was to be struck or fall to the ground, seeds can be propelled at 160 kmh in all directions, causing pretty serious damage to animals or people they hit.
Poisonous touch: While the tree bark itself isn’t poisonous, only a few seconds of exposure to the Nesmite’s sap can lead to some really nasty rashes, and possibly blindness if it one touches their eyes with the sap still on them.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The native humans to Somov Rit called the Nesmite the “Demon” tree in their native language. And with how dangerous and even in some cases, deadly, this tree can be, it’s certainly earned that namesake. Not only that, but the Nesmite can be called an invasive species of tree as well. If one was to grow in the right conditions on a planet, there is little that can be done to stop the spread of it’s seeds as the seed pods explode and grow. Shamira Kaurto brought numerous pods to Caer Badru to study, in a safe manner, and to determine the secrets of these exploding pods. The pods don’t seem to take to Ryloth’s soil, however just one of the seeds from the pod can be used to grow an entirely new seed pod with it’s own collection of seeds.
