Intent: To develop a brand new stealth technology using Adegan crystals for Aurora Industries to use
Development Thread:
http://starwarsrp.net/topic/100044-phantom-of-the-past/
Manufacturer: Aurora Industries
Model: Nebulous Adegan Cloaking Device
Affiliation: Aurora Industries and select partners

Modularity: None
Production: Limited

Material: Turadium, Adegan crystals

Strengths:
+ Creates a cloaking field on par with a stygium cloak
+ Can be linked together, much like a bank of power cells, to form a larger cloaking field for use by larger ships
+ Cheaper to produce due to using mephite Adegan crystals
+ Able to not be detected by most types of scanners and sensors
+ Has an anti-tampering device built in to prevent reverse engineering

Weaknesses:
+ Cloaking field deactivates upon a ship’s weapons firing (for larger ships the cloaking field will go down around a ship’s gun emplacements not the full ship)
+ Requires a great deal of power, especially when linked together, so the cloak is not instantaneous (for larger ships, the cloaking field will start at where the devices are located and then spread over the rest of the ship)
+ For smaller ships, communications are disabled while the cloak is in place
+ For smaller ships, the cloaking field won’t be able to maintain coherence at high speeds and will disappear and reappear sporadically
+ Crystal field grav traps and magnetic sensors will still be able to detect a cloaked ship
+ Lesser versions of Adegan crystals cannot be used to fuel the device, and pontite will overload the circuits and destroy it

Description:

For many years, cloaking technology had been centered around the use of stygium, and to a lesser extent hibridrium, which presented a problem. Stygium was becoming rarer in the galaxy at large, so Taeli and Aurora Industries began exploring new options to develop cloaking technology that didn’t use the aforementioned ores. Following on a story Taeli had read during her time with the One Sith, her engineers began working on adapting Adegan crystals for use in a cloaking device.

While the original blueprints didn’t survive Darth Malgus’s death, Taeli and her company were able to develop the Nebulous Cloaking Device, using mephite Adegan crystals as the main component. It was discovered that if mephite crystals were attuned to the proper harmonics and focused with the right intensity of energy, they could produce a field on par with a stygium cloaking device (however lesser crystals, such as danite could not produce a powerful enough effect to create a stable field and pontite would actually overload and destroy the device outright).

While the field is on par with a stygium cloak, evading most sensors and scanners and the naked eye, an equipped ship can still be detected by grav traps or magnetic sensors. However, that trade-off was something Taeli was comfortable with considering the other challenge she gave her engineers when designing the device. Similar to power cells, the Nebulous cloaking device can link together with other devices to produce a larger cloaking field that can be used for larger ships such as capital ships. However, the cloak is not instantaneous as it begins where the bank of devices is located and then spreads outwards to cover the rest of the ship (with a similar effect when de-cloaking). Like the Phantasm cloaking devices, the Nebulous also deactivates when a ship uses its weapon systems due to the power constraints on lesser ships. An oddity for this case is that larger ships do not fully de-cloak, but the individual weapon emplacements that are firing are revealed so it appears as though a turbolaser or mass driver or ion cannon is floating in space.

Smaller ships also have their communications completely disabled when the cloak is engaged, and at high speeds the cloaking device will be intermittent, cutting in and out of use and revealing the ship sporadically. As a final note, the Nebulous is equipped with an anti-tampering device that will cause the device to self-destruct if attempts at reverse engineering are detected by the embedded sensors and trip wires.

OOC Caveat: Would still require a development for actual installation on a ship, the purchase of a device does not mean it is instantly equipped.
