Saddled with an aging starfighter defense fleet, Naboo set about to update and reconfigure its squadrons of elite starfighters in preparation for any need that might arise. Several dozen standard fighters were constructed with the help of Royal Naboo Shipwrights to outfit and replace the N-1 and similar starfighters of old. Highly armed and incredibly maneuverable, they are capable of performing a wide variety of missions, including the disabling of larger enemy craft, should they pose a risk to the population of Naboo. Similarly, they are also equipped with high powered electromagnetic plasma cannons, known for their sheer destructive force, borrowed from Umbaran tech. This unique variant model also includes a reinforced hull impregnated with impervium as well as neutronium and AR-0b to disperse damage. Much of the hyperdrive bay was removed and replaced with a more conservative, less powerful model to further compensate for the additional tech. Because of production limitations, this fighter is unique with respect to its sister model, the N-9 Starfighter.

No, it's just fluff to state that the starfighter is more advanced in its design than a typical run of the mill generic canon fighter.
