The Eclipse Sect was not an organization of friends, nor was it an arena that carried much in the way of political weight within the wider Sith Empire. Still, relationships—whether transactional, personal, political, spiritual, or of wholly different nature—could be cultivated within the bounds of the Sect. In that, Ellissanthia had inadvertently made a connection with Madri Kern, an Eclipse Ascendant of greater stature (both literally and hierarchically) who held a rank within the Sect that the Undine aspired to one day reach.

A number of Ellissanthia’s peers had recognized her as a savant in the area of applying raw telekinetic power. Her reputation within the Sect had grown with her resume and the number of connections she had made with Sith, who carried influence and power beyond that of any Jen’jidai. Thus, she had been given the opportunity to prove to Madri that her reputation was neither false nor unwarranted.

And if her reputation proved true, a relationship could be built in which both Ascendant and Adept would thrive.

Of course, Madri had nothing to prove. Ellissanthia had known of her since her earliest days at the Temple, when she herself was still fresh from the Sith Academy on Dromund Kaas. Madri Kren was a Blade Master—a virtuoso in lightsaber combat who was arguably the best duelist in the Sect, and better than most Sith beyond it.

Now, standing at the center of the training chamber, Ellissanthia waited in reverent silence for the Ascendant’s arrival. The room was awash in a dim crimson glow from the recessed lighting, the blue-hued sheen of the Undine’s skin reflecting the color like porcelain dipped in blood. Her expression was restrained, yet her wide, unblinking eyes betrayed a faint and restless anticipation.

She had just finished her morning conditioning exercises, her breathing still subtly controlled from exertion, but her posture remained composed. Around her, a selection of objects floated in slow, precise orbits—a demonstration of her control and the tools for what was to come. A dense stone slab. A hollow durasteel sphere. A shard of brittle bone. A glass orb so delicate that even the faintest tremor would shatter it.

Everything was ready.

Ellissanthia’s slender, elongated fingers flexed slightly at her sides, not out of nervousness but as an unconscious ritual, a tiny superstition to still her mind. A silent reminder passed in her thoughts then, one that was equal parts demanding and expectant.

Do this well. Do it perfectly. Prove yourself useful.

And so the Undine waited, the silence of the chamber deep and anticipant, ready to receive the one whose approval might shape the future of her place within the Sect.

Madri strode quickly through the hallways of the Temple of the Eclipse Adepts. This was more a product of her long legs than her actually being in any sort of hurry. She and one of the Adepts had made a pact to show each other their expertise in combat. While Madri was always looking for an edge in a fight, she would never believe that the fancy Force stuff was a replacement for whichever blade she chose to employ.

This particular Adept had grown a reputation for an alternative form of combat. Madri wasn’t ignorant enough to think that a blade was the only way to fight. But she rather enjoyed showing that it was the most effective. Ellissanthia was by all accounts a powerful being. But she had failed her combat trials. That triggered this move towards an alternative form of combat. That would sit fine with some. Madri felt that just meant Ellissanthia was not trained properly or hard enough. Still if the Adept was able to impress others in combat without being even a competent bladesman, there was a possibility Madri could better herself by learning these talents from Ellissanthia.

Madri didn’t believe there was anyone who was unable to be dangerous wielding a lightsaber, or some variation thereof. Any student who failed to gain an acceptable prowess with a blade was lazy and/or had a lazy teacher. Madri was happy to let the lazy student falter. Any who were left behind by a master she would make sure became a proper weapon. Ellissanthia had asked for training. Madri would not have turned her down even if the exchange was not offered. But the Sith way was to take when possible.

The training chamber was normally a second home for Kadri. A place where she proved her dominance and shared her talents. The feeling was something different this time. Madri didn’t put much merit in the feel a place gave her. Anything she felt could be conquered by brute force. So she put that feeling aside and proceeded deeper into the training chamber.

Ellissanthia stood in the chamber’s center, Madri gave the adept a long appraising look. It was not the first time they had been in each other’s presence. But this was the first time Madri really took to measure up her teacher and student. She was not looking for whether or not she could make Ellissathia into a proper swordswoman, but rather which lightsaber talents could be used most effectively. The adept was short and not obviously athletic at first glance. Neither would make any difference in Madri’s eyes. Ellissantha’s coloring reminded Madri of water and her ears spoke of an aquatic nature. Again not much that could tell Madri which direction training should take.

Around the adept orbited four vastly different objects. Madri’s interest was piqued. What the small, shapely adept was going to do with those four objects to impress a blade master was out of Madri’s imagination. ”I am here Adept Ellissanthia. Let’s see what you got to offer. When you are done I will show you a better way to fight.”
