The two brothers attacked their uncle. During the chaotic battle, Nemesis overwhelmed Derek and cruelly forced Muad into an ultimatum: save his brother Derek, or stop his uncle. Muad chose family, allowing Rhaegar to temporarily escape.
Despite their violent past, the ultimate proof of their bond came when Rhaegar was tragically killed, tearing apart House Dib—particularly Rhaegar's partner and Muad's sister, Ginnie Dib.

At one point, Muad explains that he has traveled through other realms where the normal passage of time does not affect him in the same way.
His physical aging becomes effectively frozen while the galaxy continues aging.
This provides an explanation for the enormous span of his apparent history without corresponding physical aging.
Combined with his Doashim connection, it makes Muad unusually difficult to classify as simply a conventional Force-sensitive human.
XXII. PHILOSOPHY
Muad's philosophy ultimately evolves from:
"I am powerful because I embrace darkness."

"I am powerful because I choose who I belong to."
His relationship with Mandalorian culture gives him something the Sith never truly provided:

That is why the image of Muad standing on Thyferra, putting his beskar-clad body between blaster fire and a family, is arguably more important to his character than any of his Sith feats.
