OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a field defense module for the closed market.
  • Canon Link: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Projects currently-existing defensive systems to a minimum defensive field of ten kilometers in diameter, scaling depending on the size of projecting ship.
STRENGTHS
  • Team Player: Able to project a defensive field with a mimum of ten kilometers in diameter, the Aergard can be used not to just shield the ship it's projecting from but others around it.
  • Add-On: The Aergard is an add-on module, meaning that it can function with any type of pre-existing shield system.
WEAKNESSES
  • Size Requirements: The Aergard can only be mounted on ships of battlecruiser or larger.
  • Friendly Fire: The polarized-magnetic and neutron-positive fields of the Aergard affect the capabilities and effectiveness of friendly weapons as well.
  • Within the Shield: With any shield or defensive barrier projected beyond the limits of a ship, it opens up the vulnerability of ships drawing into close-range -- inside the shield bubble -- and being able to attack the ship on which the Aergard is projecting from without the shield generator protecting the ship in question.
DESCRIPTION
The next development in Roble Manufacturing's extensive line of ship and defensive technology, the MRS-03X Aergard Field Defense Module is designed to take shield systems and defenses to the next level. It is not a comprehensive shielding system by itself, but instead a module that extends the capability of any defensive system already present on a ship.

What gives it's unique property is the ability to project the shields over a radius larger than just the size of the own ship. Although only ships of battlecruiser size or larger have enough power supply to feasibly support such a feat, this allows small battlecruisers to project any or all of the Aergard's defensive systems in a defensive sphere at maximum ten kilometers in diameter. This maximum sphere grows with size of ship, with the largest conventional star dreadnaughts being able to potentially project up to five times that amount, and larger space stations even more.

However, projecting in a field does present drawbacks, as the shielding is no longer protecting the ship itself which allows enemies to take advantage of that fact and move in close, within the limits of the shield bubble, for an easy kill. In addition to that, the various fields produced by the Aergard affect the effectiveness of incoming and outgoing fire, meaning that a netron-positive or polarized-magnetic field will affect friendly weapons as well.

However, despite that, the Aergard is still an extremely useful and capable piece of technology that will no doubt reshape naval engagements to come.
