- Description -
The monosaber is a unique melee weapon designed and built by Triter Zone for his own use. Small, compact and incredibly sharp, this weapon was inspired by Jedi and Sith lightsabers, though unlike them, it does not use an energy blade. The Monosaber was developed by Triter in order to give himself a melee weapon, similar in both cutting power and quickness to his molecular stiletto, but possessing better reach with a longer blade. This, he reasoned, would give him better standoff capability in a close-in fight, and keep him nominally safer from grappling by larger opponents.
The solution the young Amaran space pirate arrived at was unique.
Triter's monosaber resembles the hilt of a deactivated lightsaber. Rather than a plasma blade, however, its cutting power comes from a length of monofilament wire, a molecule-wide strand which can cleave through flesh, bone, and even many types of body armor. The normally flexible wire - once unreeled from the hilt - stands rigid in a static field projected around it, and is nearly invisible except to beings with extremely good vision or Force sensitivity. When first activated, the blade produces a brief crackling sound, and becomes briefly visible when striking due to the contact discharges of its electrostatic field.
Though its molecule-wide edge can slice through nearly any substance, cleaving through flesh and metal alike, it does have its disadvantages. Like a vibroblade, the monosaber is dangerous to wield against electrified weapons; interaction with a stronger electrical field can short its own, causing the blade to lose its rigidity and potentially collapse back onto the wielder, which can lead to gruesome wounds. The blade is also invisible to the naked eye, which means that the user must calculate the position of the blade in their head, lest they injure themselves with their own weapon. Finally, unlike a lightsaber, the monosaber cannot parry energy weapons, and in fact is too light to effectively parry heavier edged weapons made of resistant materials, typically ultra-dense metals and other materials with tightly packed molecular structures. Typically, the monosaber can be relied upon to cut through moderate body armor, most plastics and common metals, such as durasteel, but can be defeated by heavy armor materials such as duranium, impervium and so-forth.
The weapon's hilt is also similar to a lightsaber, and though Triter is not force-sensitive, the presence of the weapon when displayed can cause him to be mistaken for a Jedi or Sith, sometimes advantageous but generally a bad thing when surrounded by the kind of company Triter tends to keep.
Otherwise, the monosaber is an excellent melee weapon which has gotten Triter out of many a tight spot.
