FOr security purposes this can prevent quick access by slicers, for practical purposes using the crawlspaces is possible while the ship is in lockdown with the manual release. With security lock plates in place to be used and heavy access doors that are on systems within the spaces. It won't trap someone for long if they want to get out but in the case of an attack it can be used to severely narrow down the number of enemies by sealing the hatches and trapping them inside. Security remotes and droids can move quickly between levels of the ship and help defend the spaces.
