OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

  • Intent: To provide a modernized Lucerne Labs equivalent of the old Imperial Beam Weapon Module (IBWM) found on Imperial fighters in X-wing Versus Tie Fighter

  • Canon Link: None

  • Restricted Missions: None

  • Primary Source: None
PRODUCTION INFORMATION

  • Manufacturer: Lucerne Labs

  • Model: Modular Auxiliary Systems Turret (MAST)

  • Affiliation: Galactic Alliance, Silver Jedi, Directorate, Closed Market

  • Modularity: Yes, detailed below

  • Production: Mass-Produced.

  • Material: Agrinium frame and casing, electronics
SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Highly Modular: Much like the IBWM, the MAST is a modular fitting with its own dedicated power source that allows the utilizing starfighter or transport to use a variety of small, different electronic systems, such as sensor jammers and tactical tractor beam projectors.

  • Turreted: Like it's name suggests, the MAST is a rotating mount approximately 0.3 meters in diameter, which allows the device(s) to be pointed at different areas and targets.

Strengths:

  • Highly Modular: The basic MAST itself is little more than some circuitry to integrate it to the ship, a turret mount, and a power source. This allows a variety of small, specially designed devices to be fitted to the MAST equipped ship.

  • Directional: MAST devices are quite small, and combined with their turret mount, can rapidly change orientation to point at targets and specific areas of space.
Weaknesses:

  • Limited Duration: MAST's relatively small size means that its independent power supply is also quite small, which in turn means that the attached devices cannot usually be used as frequently as much or often as their permanently powered competitors. While a ship's own power supply can provide power to the MAST, this still must go through the MAST's capacitors, which means that it still has a slow recharge time.

  • Exposed: While the turret mount allows MAST the ability to point at specific areas and targets, it also makes the device relatively exposed to many of its competitors, and thus is more likely to be destroyed or damaged.

DESCRIPTION

The Modular Auxiliary Systems Turret is a modernized version of the Imperial Beam Weapon Module used by the original Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War. At its core, MAST is little more than integration circuitry, a turret mount, and an independent power supply. All of these components are meant to support a modular component, which can be swapped out in under ten minutes by ground crews, astromech droids, and other technologically minded peoples and droids. This integration circuitry is relatively flexible, allowing it to support a variety of technologies, most of which are limited by the MAST's small physical size and limited power source. Currently, there are only four devices available from Lucerne Labs for the MAST, but more may be available in the future (will require future submission).

Sensor Jammer: This unit is a simplified and streamlined version of the Phantom 4-x sensor jammer made famous by the A-wing. Unlike the 4-x, the turret allows this sensor jammer to not only be omnidirectional in a radius around the fighter itself, but it can also be pointed directionally outwards to jam specific areas and vectors much like the massive 220-SIG.

Tactical Tractor Beam Projector: This module is almost identical to its IBWM counterpart, consisting of a relatively small tractor beam projector. While not typically powerful enough to drag around other starfighters, it can hamper their maneuverability and speed, making them easier prey for the MAST using ship or friendly vessels. This device can also be used to snag and pull around small objects, such as warheads, EVA pilots, or small pieces of jettisoned cargo. Some pilots additionally use it to pull their ship closer to other larger objects or to assist in landing/docking their ship.

Directional Particle Shield: This module projects a weak particle shield approximately four meters in diameter up to 20 meters in front of the craft. This typically is not powerful enough to outright stop any impact, but rather acts as spaced armor, causing objects that collide with it to veer offcourse or prematurely detonate much like a Trudo Defense Turret. Almost any impact against this directional shield will overwhelm the shield, causing it to start a recharge cycle that typically takes around thirty seconds for the shield to reappear.

Enhanced Targeting Package: This module consists of a tuned Universal Transceiver package hooked up to a targeting laser. But cross-checking the universal transceiver's feed with that of the ship's main sensors, broad jamming noise can more easily be filtered out by seeing the constant signatures. The targeting laser can be added to this routine to add another point of reference to further screen out sensor jamming noise, as well as to improve the accuracy of friendly weapons.

The Modular Auxiliary Systems Turret is not expected to be a significant game changer on the battlefield. Almost all of its devices are already on the use on the battlefield. However, it does grant some flexibility in outfitting individual craft, which more likely than not, will make it a popular choice for independent starfighter owners and military units that have more leeway in outfitting their units.
