Description:

The MH-SC06 Shield Leech Weapon is an electronic warfare weapon with an extremely short range. The weapon requires the ship to reach close range with a ship of equal or greater size. The weapon draws in the energy of a nearby starship's energy shielding, causing roughly the same amount of damage that 20 Ion Cannons would do. The weapon routes the majority of the energy absorbed in this way back into the weapon, continuing the power the drain effect. The remaining 30% gets applied to the host ship's shielding. This effect can only restore shield strength lost while in combat and cannot charge the ship's shielding beyond standard levels. This effect can remain in effect for so long as the ship and her prey stay within 'close' ranges of each other. However, extended use of this sensitive weapon system comes with increased risk of the weapon overloading or suffering an electrical malfunction.

Should the host ship attempt to use this weapon while at full shield strength or attempt to restore more shielding than it can maintain, the weapon will overload and become inoperable, potentially damaging nearby subsystems. However, if used when the host ship's shields are dangerously low and at risk of failing, and the target ship's shields are still functioning strongly, the effectiveness of this weapon increases and a return of as much as 60% can be obtained in some instances. This effect is rare and only temporary. Once the overall shield strength of the two ships begins to equalize, the gain of this weapon returns to the standard 30% values.

The Shield Leech Weapon is intended to be used on Cruisers and Heavy Cruisers. This weapon is typically ineffective against ships of frigate size or smaller due to the vast differences in total available power and shielding between the target vessel and the host ship. While smaller ships are easily overwhelmed by the effects of a Shield Leech Weapon, there is only enough return energy to keep the weapon powered, leaving little to no gain in shield strength.

When used against Star Destroyer sized ships, the effect of this weapon upon overall shield strength is negligible, but the return in energy and shield strength is significant to the host vessel. As much as 40 to 50% return ratings can be obtained by the host vessel's shields when used against a Star Destroyer sized ship.




MH-SC06-B 'Heavy' Shield Leech Weapon

The MH-SC06-B 'Heavy' Shield Leech Weapon is a significantly larger variant of the weapon designed to be used on Star Destroyers. The weapon only functions at close range and has a damaging effect on a target's energy shields that is roughly equivalent to the effect 40 Heavy Ion Cannons would have. Just like the standard variant used on Cruisers, the weapon routes the majority of the energy absorbed in this way back into the weapon, continuing the power the drain effect. The remaining 30% gets applied to the host ship's shielding.

This weapon is typically ineffective against ships of cruiser size or smaller due to the vast differences in total available power and shielding between the target vessel and the host ship. While smaller ships are easily overwhelmed by the effects of a Heavy Shield Leech Weapon, there is only enough return energy to keep the weapon powered, leaving little to no gain in shield strength.


All other aspects of the standard variant apply to the Heavy Shield Leech Weapon, including risks and benefits regarding the shield strength of the host ship when using this weapon system.

FYI; I wasn't sure where to mention it, but the basis of this system was approved aboard the Type 2 Keldabe-class Battleship. The canon ship (admittedly, from a game) is one of the very few Canon ships to specifically mention being made by Mandal Hypernautics but was equipped with a weapon that sucked up shields and increased weapon rate of fire... Which... was funky, but I wanted to include in the end design for completeness. *shrug* We ended up finding a way to balance it out to work for that design. I was wanting to sub an actual Tech submission for the weapon to A- Expand upon the capabilities and limitations of the weapon system. B- Give myself the ability to use it on future designs. C- Do some IC copyrighting to keep the weapon from being subbed by anyone not affiliated with the Mandal Hypernautics.

As far as the dev thread goes... It's a fair request. I'll get on that.
