Description:

The Mandal Hypernautics CW05 Deck Cannon is a twin-barreled combination of a mass-driver cannon and an ion cannon that is utilized aboard numerous Mandalorian warships. The Mass Driver component of the Deck Cannon utilizes the rail gun propulsion method to achieve a velocity of 6km a second. When this projectile is fired, it is echoed by the firing of its twin ion cannon.

Ion Cannon Mechanics
An ion cannon is a weapon that fires highly ionized particles or highly ionized plasma, depending on the model of ion cannon.(1) The Mandal Hypernautics brand of Ion Cannon utilizes the ionized particles method. These particles seriously interfered with the operation of electronics and computer systems, shorting circuits and often disabling them outright, in much the same manner as an electromagnetic pulse. (2) There are certain types of ion cannons which are meant to do more physical damage with electrical disruption as a plus. These types of ion cannon, however, have the drawback of low firing rate and are often just replaced with heavy turbolasers. (3) The actual physical damage would sometimes result in fused joints on machines, due to the heat produced. (4)

Each ion cannon emplacement includes an ion tube, ion accu-accelerator, turbine generator, cooling grid, targeting computers, elevation tracking, and maintenance access hatches. Each cannon is controlled by an entire crew of individuals from a gunnery station inside the ship.

When firing, large negative-ion pulses are charged in a turbine generator then channeled into a plasma charge or released as a large pulse towards a target, (5) depending on the model of ion cannon. A volley from these weapons could disable an unshielded ship for several minutes. As a result, ion cannons were the weapon of choice for subduing, rather than destroying, enemy starships, vehicles, shields, or droids. (6)

While ion weaponry at face value seems ideal, the ion cannon is not without its weaknesses. Even though large ion cannons like the V-200 and other planetary ion cannons were capable of temporarily or permanently disabling electrical systems and penetrating shields on capital ships, (1a) ion weaponry is not typically known for tight-beam accuracy. (7) As a typical ion cannon's plasma or particle projection travels, the projection spreads and dissipates as it becomes weaker. This can be exaggerated in ground-based planetary ion cannons and other large cannons when firing at targets beyond the weapons optimal ranges. In these conditions, the weapon could easily hit friendly targets operating near the intended target.

Even when an ion cannon hits its intended target, most capital ships struck by ion weaponry have numerous crewmen on hand to repair damaged and disabled electronics which would allow the vessel to continue fighting,(8) albeit after a few moments of decreased performance.

Mass-Driver Mechanics
“A mass driver is a type of projectile cannon. They inflicted damage by hurling projectiles at high velocities, which impart kinetic energy and force to the target upon impact. Damage was thus a result of the mass of the projectile and its velocity. The velocity the projectile could achieve is limited by the method by which it is initially propelled. For a chemical explosion (how a conventional slugthrower works), the peak velocity was ~1.8 km/s. For a plasma driven round from an electrothermal cannon (an electrical arc vaporizes the propellant into a plasma to create the requisite pressure to propel the slug), the peak was ~2.5 km/s. For a gauss/coil gun (where the mass is accelerated by passing through sequenced electromagnetic fields) the limit was ~2 km/s due to the rate at which the fields can be created and collapse. These speeds are extremely small in comparison to light speed.

For a rail gun (where the slug is accelerated by Lorentz forces and electromagnetism between two parallel rails) there was no real limit (except the speed of light), only a practical one based on rail erosion and, when in atmosphere, ablation of the projectile. Typically this speed was 6 km/s.” - Wookieepedia Page: Mass Drivers

There are two models of Mandal Hypernautics Dack Cannon. The MH-CW05A and the MH-CW05B. The MH-CW05A Deck Cannon utilizes advanced target acquisition hardware and software to plot the intercept trajectory of its 6km/s traveling projectile and the exact time delay between firing and target impact. Once the exact time to impact is determined, the automated systems calculate the time to impact for the charged particles launched from the ion cannon to impact the same target. Using the two time-to-impact calculations, the weapon would then automatically delay the firing of the ion cannon enough so that the two weapons impacted the target near-simultaneously.

The MH-CW05A is timed specifically so that the ion cannon impacts the intended target a fraction of a second before the mass-driver projectile impacts the target. This split second delay enables the effects of the ion weapon to weaken that precise section of shielding long enough for the projectile to, theoretically, punch through the shield and impact against the hull of the targeted ship.

The MH-CE05B uses a different method of achieving the same goal as the MH-CE05A. This variation of the Deck Cannon sought to increase the accuracy of the weapon and increase the efficiency of the design by abandoning the delayed firing technique in favor of adopting technology commonly seen in rifles and other large caliber personal weaponry throughout the galaxy. The MH-CE05B utilizes an enveloping technology similar to that used in Tuskan Raider rifles and in Tenloss's Ambassador Revolver (of which Rygel Larraq, CEO of Mandal Hypernautics, is a fan).

In the B variant of the Deck Cannon, a large negative-ion pulse is charged in a turbine generator then channeled into a solid projectile in an elongated barrel after it has already been accelerated by the mass-driver. This method ensures that the ion charge and projectile impact the intended target at the same time but without requiring the advanced targeting computers of the A variant.

Just like the A variant, the ion charge of the B variant allows the projectile, in theory, to bypass the shielding of a capital ship and to impact directly against the hull of its target. In the B variant, this is achieved by the enveloped projectile's charged ions being transferred into the protective shielding of a target ship as the projectile passes. This transfer bleeds off the envelopment and leaves only the solid shot to impact the weakened shields and, hopefully, pierce them with enough force to impact and damage the hull of the ship.

Limitations
While the force of a kinetic strike against a point of shielding momentarily weakened by the impact of an ion charge is highly taxing to the shield systems of any ship, it is rarely enough to allow the slug to completely bypass a target ship's energy shielding unless said ship is already on the verge of shield failure. And while small ships or ships sporting under-powered deflector shielding may find themselves particularly vulnerable to this weapon, ships with advanced, heavy, or redundant shields are often not at risk to the penetrating effects of this weapon unless they have already sustained significant damage. More over, the weapon appears to have no special effect against a ship which utilize separate ray and particle shields instead of unified deflector shielding, as the ion charge and solid slug impact the respective shield systems seperately.

Classification: Capital Weapon
Size: Ship-Mounted
Status: Military
Models: Deck Cannon, Heavy Deck Cannon, Long Range Deck Cannon, Heavy Long Range Deck Cannon
Effective Range: Long Range, Long Range, Very Long Range, Extended Range,
Value: 3 Capital Weapons, 6 Capital Weapons, 15 Capital Weapons, 30 Capital Weapons,

Special Effect: Does extra damage to deflector shields and has a chance to penetrate deflector shielding that increases in likelihood as the strength of the target's shields decrease. Shield penetration unlikely on targets with shields at >50% of normal shield levels for a ship of their size. As a target's shields weaken to below 50%, the chance of shield penetration increases proportionally until a maximum likelihood of 80% is reached against targets with only 10% shield strength remaining.

I've made the first wave of edits to the submission. Quotation, Citation, and appropriate credit has been added to sections of the submission that are drawn from Wookieepedia entries.

The weapon has been made to do extra damage to deflector shielding, but does normal damage to ray/particle shielding and does normal damage to the hull of the ship itself. Instead of bypassing deflector shielding entirely, the weapon now has a chance to pierce the deflector shielding of ships that have already sustained serious damage... with more seriously damaged ships suffering a greater chance of having a slug pierce their shields.

I feel this is a much more fair and friendly submission, as it gives the defending writer the choice of when to take extra damage from these weapons and how much extra damage to take, in addition to not having a chance to "alpha" an opposing ship by completely ignoring full strength shields.

Due to the extra damage to deflector shielding and the chance to penetrate weakened shielding, I've valued the weapon at 3x normal... where the standard deck cannon used from canon sources is valued at 2x normal.

Apologies for the wait.

I looked this over as well as all the source material. I realized that I am okay with this weapon existing, especially because such a weapon already exist in the factory as approved. However that weapon has 50+ posts of dev behind it. As such i would like you to do a Dev thread of 15-20 Quality posts to this this passed through.
