- Historical Artifact: This crystal fragment has managed to survive for nearly 5,000 years, despite changing hands numerous times. I am surprised that it has lasted this long, though its continued existence is perhaps a testament to its great historical significance.
- The Exile's Fingerprint: The crystal contains lingering Force energies from its bond with the Jedi Meetra Surik. In a way, it contains a part of her. If one were to find a way to exploit these trace energies, the possible (hypothetical) benefits would include:
- - A charisma boost
- - Heightened Force powers
- - Improved leadership skills
- - An increase in the likelihood of Force bonds forming
- - The ability to feed on death
- - I would even theorize that it might allow the exploiter to sever their bond with the Force without dying, as Surik herself once did.
- Already Chosen: The crystal remains imprinted with the Force energies of Meetra Surik and cannot be bonded in this way to anyone else. It is the Exile’s, now and forever.
- Won't Work in a Lightsaber Anymore: Should you attempt to place this crystal in a lightsaber, the lightsaber will not function due to the bonding.
- Fragile: It is only a crystal, after all. Strike it and it will break.
- Small: It would be easy to lose or misplace it.
- For All Intents and Purposes, Useless: Unless some hotshot alchemist comes along and successfully exploits the energies it contains, the crystal has no benefits to offer anyone other than its long-dead master.

In 3,995 BBY, an exiled Jedi named Meetra Surik paid a visit to Dantooine. In a cave near the Khoonda Plains, she found a crystal which responded to her. She would later make use of this crystal, placing it in her newly constructed lightsaber, where it enhanced her abilities and the attributes of any other crystals she placed in the saber. As the crystal accompanied her in her travels across the galaxy, it became attuned to her to the point where her lightsaber would not function for anyone else but her.
It is unknown what exactly happened to Surik's lightsaber or the crystal upon Surik's death at the hands of Lord Scourge, but at some point the crystal was removed from the saber. Around twenty seven years ago, a retired Jedi Master named Irrylath Rand went in search of relics pertaining to Surik. The old fool was convinced he was a direct descendant of Surik's companion Atton Rand. While this is unlikely (so much time has passed that it is impossible to trace such a complex lineage; my brain hurts just thinking about it), Irrylath apparently did manage to track down a few items which purportedly belonged to either Atton, Surik, or her other companions. Among them was this crystal.
The crystal was kept at Irrylath's home on Naboo until his death, at which point his belongings were distributed among his heirs according to his will. The crystal was sent to Irrylath's grand-nephew, a teenage boy named
Starlin Rand
who was living on Coruscant. Starlin had never met Irrylath and had no idea what the crystal was (the legal papers that came with it did identify the crystal, but the boy didn’t bother to read them—too much legal jargon for a thirteen year old to comprehend). However, the boy was soon approached by sinister figures inquiring about his inheritance. He initially believed these people were members of the criminal underworld, as Starlin had connections with such people, but it soon became apparent that they were actually affiliated with the Sith. As the harassment escalated to threats against Starlin's family, the boy made his escape off-world. The Sith gave chase, and one of his pursuers managed to rip the (limited) information about the crystal's origins from Starlin's mind as he was leaving.Among the Sith's agents was a female Felacatian,
Ladybug
, who was sent to spy on the fleeing Starlin. After contacting the archaeologist Nimdok, Starlin made his way to the planet Jerrilek, where he met with Nimdok and his young daughter, Miri, in Graleca. The group drew the attention of several others, including |The Wayfarer| , who worked on the same ship Starlin had hitchhiked to Jerrilek in and was concerned about the obviously frightened boy, and

, a treasure hunter drawn by rumors of a powerful and sought-after crystal.Returning to Nimdok’s quarters, they were able to identify the original owner of the crystal as Surik, as well as attempting to use it in a lightsaber; the saber would not function regardless of who was wielding it.
