STRENGTHS
- Heavy Firepower: While not an exceptionally overarmed ship, the Liberty Kai supports a hefty battery of weapons, which are backed up with the advanced z84 Solar Ionization Reactor, giving them a higher rate of fire than most guns of a similar size. Combined with a large array of strategic-scale missile tubes, this cruiser packs a punch.
- Excellent Defense: As with the classic Mon Calamari design, the Liberty Kai features three times as many shield generators as is typical for a ship its size, arranged in recessed banks that appear like blisters. Though each individual generator is weaker than the large ones used on many Imperial vessels and other capital ships, the shielding system is designed to re-route power as units are overloaded, giving the ship overall a much faster regeneration rate and significantly better overall protection.
WEAKNESSES
- Weaker Kinetic defense: Weak armor and hull mean the ship is mostly dependent on shields for kinetic protection.
- Hunter-Killer: The Liberty Kai is designed as a pure battleship, to engage other destroyers and larger vessels in long-and-close range combat. It has only a limited hanger with a few squadrons, and while it has a very effective point defense suite it does not perform terribly well with area defense.
DESCRIPTION
The MC81k is, put simply, a modernized variant of the Liberty type Cruiser of yore. Designed by Mon Calamari exiles who fled the Sith, it is a warship through-and-through, supporting all the advanced technology that has become more common place in the galaxy today. It features a similar, but dramatically upgraded armament to the original MC80, with a primary battery of Dual Heavy Turbolasers and a first-strike component of nine long-range Turbolasers of considerable power. A secondary battery of Ion Cannon and Turbolaser blisters acts as both an offensive and defensive component, as the advanced fire control systems featured on the destroyer are more than capable of targeting strike craft as well as larger vessels and capital ships.
Defenses are likewise fairly traditional, with a heavy emphasis on shielding over armor. In a nod to the use of Vong-Tech in the past by the Sith, the Liberty Kai also mounts a GAM, which is not terribly useful for fleet utility but does help the ship combat some Sith biotech. While the Liberty Kai is not a retrofitted civilian liner like its predecessor, it still sacrifices much of its internal space and mass for power generators, relays, and other systems designed to ensure its power-hungry systems work. This gives it a weaker hull and armor than most similarly sized ships, which is not inherently problematic given the heavy shielding, but does leave the ship more vulnerable to Spatter Breach and dedicated Kinetic weapons if the shields fail.
The Liberty Kai is also no carrier vessel, and basically dependent on external strikecraft support. While this meshes well with the Galactic Alliance's Carrier Strike Group/Destroyer Battle Group formations, it does leave the ship vulnerable to more balanced destroyers in a one-on-one fight, assuming they outmaneuver it and stay at range. Finally, though not handcrafted like the ancient Mon Calamari vessels, the Liberty Kai class is expensive to produce, largely due to its internal complexity and its large reactor, and it is not exactly a common ship across GADP fleets, though it is certainly well respected by those who have commanded or faced one in battle.
