860 ABY Interview with Max Devern for The Gent magazine, Metellos.

Interviewer: Welcome Mr. Devern. The whole of Metellos is asking questions about you today. Today marks your company's 3rd anniversary, and the opening of a brand new factory on Corulag. Many are speculating about what this could mean for the future of Devern Robotics and our planet's golden boy.

Max: Well I don't know about golden boy, but I do know that the future of this company is bright. I won't bore you with the business details, but my excellent board of directors pitched to me the idea of expanding into the Galactic Alliance. The time is right and the good work those lads on Coruscant are doing means there's gonna be boom in business. The young alliance has to build itself on something, and I'd like for it to be built on the backs of my droids.

I: That sounds very exciting! Now, it's no secret you have a lot of skeptics after you. You're one of the few people here on Metellos that has broken the mold and made yourself one of the gentry based on merit. The newest issue for your skeptics seems to be your company's relationship to the Corporate Authorities of Denon. What do you think about this?

M: I'll be honest, I have had a good relationship with Denon in the past. Both my parents came from here from Denon working for the companies that now rule a number of star systems. I know its no secret that I built my company with their loans, but I want them and my skeptics to know that we are no longer beholden to them and we are not one of their companies. I hope they can see our expansion as a positive, because I believe the galaxy is big enough for everyone's business.

I: That's a very interesting take Mr. Devern and I hope the readers agree. Alright I'd like to take a step back for those who may not know you. You're the talk of the town, but after many years people still consider you an up-and-comer. Could you tell us how you got your start in the droid industry?

M: Absolutely. I've always been a mechanic at heart. My parents work long hours and what little attention they gave to the family was to my older siblings. I'm the youngest of 3. Naturally I found friends in droids. A lot of people nowadays sneer when I tell them that but things were different for the ground pounders down there. Still are I guess. It was only a matter of time before I took my droids into sports. Pretty common stuff down there. The best was the fighting. You get your droid and you make it fight another. Kinda barbaric now that I look back, but it was there that I began to develop the droids that my company has sold to protect billions of customers. I got pretty good at it, and when I wasn't working on droids or entering them in fights I was betting. Made a big bunch of cash off that.

I: Such an unorthodox start, but you truly are an unorthodox man. Do you think your success is a sign of change? Do you expect to see more people buying their way to the top in coming years?

M: I can't say. I'd certainly like to see that but I don't think many can follow in my footsteps. Not every poor boy can do what I did, but I think they can all try. And there's no harm in that.

I: Inspiring words. With your name in lights around the world your family must be very proud. Do they share in your success?

M: Unfortunately not all of them. My parents passed some years ago, and my sister sacrificed herself for the Alliance in the Great War. I maintain a good relationship with my brother, and as always I'll be celebrating today's event with my lovely girlfriend. She's been a great part of my success.

  • Strengths and Weaknesses

+Rich: Having wealth and status on a heavily stratified world has made Max's life so far a breeze. There is no problem on Metellos that can't disappear when Max flashes his credits.
+Determined Visionary: Max's visionary way of thinking allowed him to make the near-impossible rise through the rigid class structure of Metellos.
-Spice Addict: Max is addicted to the drug spice. His favourite spice is that made of the millaflower
-Gambler: Although a key factor to his wealth and success, gambling has become an unshakeable habit for Max.
