SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Three-Barrel Design

 • Built-in Ionization Field

 • Siaber Power Generator

 • Gauss/Coil Firing Mechanisms, Electromagnetic Rails

 • Automated Reload Assistance Program

 • Rangefinder / Built-in Sensors

 • Target Tracking, Lock-On/Lead System

 • Fast Track Mounting Capable

 • Heuristic Data Processing

 • Internal Temperature Check

 • Incendiary Component Regulator

 • Emergency Failsafe / Containment System

Strengths:

 • Incendiary: Utilizing a shaped-charge round to punch through armor, the incendiary round’s thermite increases the temperature of the already superheated compound. Glop allows the material to stick to whatever surface it lands on - aforementioned thermite keeps the mixture burn after impact.

 • Three Barrels: Capable of shooting three rounds at a time, allowing it a more effective damage output.

 • Double Threat: Built-in ionization fields along with the destructive kinetic power of the mass driver may allow the shells to be that much more potent.
Weaknesses:

 • Void: Given the state of the void surrounding the shells as they travel, incendiary rounds are rendered null and void should they explode prematurely as the vacuum will terminate the mixture quickly.

 • Size: Smaller vessels beneath 100m are more likely to evade the weapon’s shell give their maneuverability and speed.

 • Siaber: Mars is at the mercy of the Siaber Crystal’s stability, should the crystal become unstable the weapon will prove fatal not just to the gun crew, but to the very ship the weapon is mounted on.

 • Range: Effective at long range, Mars is unable to fire effectively at standard turbolaser combat ranges.
DESCRIPTION
The Mars-type Mass Driver Cannon is a variant of the Hailstone. The only thing the two have in common is the 512-millimeter shells that they fire, and are capable of ionizing their shells. Otherwise, Mars is an updated Hailstone that is capable of shooting incendiary rounds. These rounds are mixed and assembled via the gun crew’s ordnance units and are kept under watch through the component regulator.

The Hailstone lacked some of the more automated and computer-oriented features that the Mars now has. From automated reload assistance, target tracking and lock-on lead to the internal temperature check and failsafe components.

Otherwise, the cannon falls to the same drawbacks as the Hailstone. Their inability to fire at smaller vessels, ineffective range beyond that of long-range combat. Finally, utilizing the Siaber Crystal Power Generators means Mars also relies on the very stability of the Siaber Crystal.
