"Keep talking,
we all know you'll fly like a manta the minute things get physical."

GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Manta Fish
  • Designation: Non-sentient
  • Origins: Pamarthe
  • Average Lifespan: 45 Years
  • Estimated Population: Planetary
  • Description: The manta fish was a ray-type fish native to Pamarthe. It was large in size and shaped like an arrowhead. White spots across its body glowed in the light of the full moon and in the deepest depths of Pamarthen seas. Despite its aggressive appearance the Manta Fish was not aggressive and had little to defend itself against predators outside of flashing its spots and its incredible speed. It was a popular fish on Pamarthe with its fins held up as a delicacy. Manta Fish Fin Soup was a common dish on the more developed islands of Pamarthe despite its difficulty to catch.

Weaknesses:
  • Gills Life: Manta Fish can't breathe outside of water.
  • Delicious: Overfishing has reduced their numbers significantly in the wild.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivore
  • Communication: Flashing spots
  • Technology level: N/A
  • Religion/Beliefs: In Pamarthen culture, Manta Fish were seen as cowardly and it was considered an insult to be called a "Manta". To be called a "Flying Manta" was akin to being called not only a coward, but a coward who will run out on you at the slightest hint of discomfort.
  • General behavior: Manta Fish were typically docile creatures, content with feeding on cephalopods, crustaceans, and other bottom-feeding fish. They could be found along the coasts on beaches or around docks, attracted by rotten fish and scraps tossed into the water. They laid clutches of eggs, typically 8 to 12 at a time. However due to their lack of any real natural weapons they typically left the eggs to their own devices. As a result, they had no set breeding season and bred whenever the opportunity arose. To escape from predators they relied on their incredible speed, sometimes swimming up to supersonic speeds to escape the faster predators of Pamarthe's deep sea. Away from the coast they could often be found in groups close to the surface, 'flying' over the waves. These flying manta fish were often found on the shore, beached, after attempting to fly in a storm and being subsequently tossed hundreds of kilometers away from home and stranded on dry land.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Manta fish were historically a staple of Pamarthen fine dining. Due to their tendency to panic and swim off at full speed, it took a team of skilled sailors and fishermen to capture the manta fish, thus making it one of the more expensive meats sold at market alongside Greater Skyeel and shark. Their glowing spots made them popular creatures off-world as well, especially for fish collectors and aquariums. Overfishing has brought their population down and raised prices on the fish in recent years.
