We are young

Two Days Ago:
The delivery man set the package on the frost-dusted doorstep of Chrysa's home on Midvinter, his breath curling in pale clouds as he scanned the label for the third time. Inside lay a meticulously drawn map with inked trails and cryptic markings guiding the bearer toward an unidentified object steeped in darkness.

But the strangest part wasn't the map.

The package wasn't addressed to Chrysa at all.

It bore the name Katarine Ryiah, and in bold, unmistakable script, the sender had added a final instruction:

Signature required, recipient must be Connel Vanagor.

Present Day:
Location: Thyferra -
Xozhixi
Objective: Meet with Connel and learn about package

The noise inside a police station never truly stopped. Comms chirped from cluttered desks, datapads buzzed, caf machines hissed through their eternal brew cycles. Droids rolled past with freshly fingerprinted petty thieves; detectives rubbed at sleepless eyes; lawyers bellowed about civil rights around every corner.

But inside the interrogation room, the soundproofing panels dragged the whole weight of the precinct onto their narrow backs, creating a false pocket of calm. It was the kind of quiet that made the hairs on your neck stand up with an engineered unease meant to knock suspects off balance.

Katarine stood in the middle of that stillness, sharing it with a broad-shouldered detective named Devins. The Xozchixi Police Department had been more willing to tolerate her presence than most, but tension still hung thick. With the Alliance collapsed, there was no true federal authority anymore, and Katarine was left bouncing from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, asking for scraps of cooperation on cold cases. Most officers trusted Jedi the way they trusted a blaster pointed at their spine.

She was used to it. And after months of drifting, she was grateful just to be working again. Thinking had gotten her nowhere; doing, at least, might save lives. Hunting killers was the one thing she'd always been good at.

Devins sat in a hard metal chair across from their suspect who was a large, dark-skinned man with a jagged scar slicing across one eye. Katarine remained standing. At five-foot-two she barely cleared the height of either man even while they sat, but she carried herself like the tallest person in the room. They had been testing the suspect for over an hour: Devins playing reasonable cop, Katarine weaponizing the man's open disdain for women to needle him toward a break.

Beneath Katarine's deep green eyes were shadows of exhaustion which was normal for her. The job consumed her like a wildfire, leaving her nights filled with case files instead of sleep. And this case was particularly brutal: three annihilated families. All trails pointed toward the man in cuffs but only lightly, too lightly for Katarine's taste. Devins insisted they needed a confession for any hope of conviction. So far their suspect wasn't talking about the crime, just everything else.

"I feel shaky," he muttered. "Probably low blood sugar."

Devins straightened and gestured toward the one-way mirror where officers watched. "Can we get him something to eat, please?"

Katarine's palms slammed onto the table before the sentence finished. "You're the reason three grandmothers had to bury their grandchildren this week," she snapped. "You're lucky you're feeling anything below the neck."

His shoulders were as wide as her waist, but Katarine didn't flinch. She leaned in until her nose nearly brushed his, her glare cutting into his bloodshot eyes.

"Ease up," Devins warned. "He can't think straight if he's hungry."

"I don't know what you are on about b!tch."

"Well le tme jog your memory!" She snatched the case file, flipping out the crime scene photos with angles so brutal even seasoned officers hated looking at them. She shoved them toward him.

"Don't show him those!"

"I don't know them people," the suspect muttered.

"You don't recognize your handiwork? Then look closer!" Katarine drove a boot into his chair, shoving him forward, forcing the images into his vision.

"NO!" His cuffed arm swept across the table, sending the photos skittering across the floor. He dropped his head into his hands like a child refusing homework.

Katarine crouched, gathered the photos, and headed for the door. A moment later the lock buzzed open.

"RYIAH!" Devins shot to his feet and followed her into the observation room. "Where the hell are you going? We need him to talk!"

"He didn't do it."

Devins blinked. "What are you talking about?"

"The man we're looking for is a sexual sadist. A man like that would relish looking at these. This guy couldn't even glance at them."

"Listen, Jedi." Devins jabbed a finger her way. "I know how to interrogate a perp. This guy beat three of his ex-girlfriends half to death. He's violent."

"Yes," she agreed calmly. "He's an abusive, biggoted nerf. But he's not a sexual sadist."

"Do you hear how stupid you sound?"

"I can't hear anything over your loud mouth."

"That's enough, both of you."

The chief had arrived, jaw set like durasteel.

"Ryiah, you're off the case. I can't have you upsetting my officers."

"But Chief..."

"I don't want to hear it. Conference room. Now."

Katarine stormed down the hall, anger simmering under her skin. The moment she crossed into the conference room she pivoted and drove her fist into the wall. Pain flared up her arm and she winced, but she didn't regret it. Unfortunately, the chief hadn't sent her here to cool off alone. Someone was waiting for her.

"Connel?" She turned away from the wall, her deep green eyes widdening in surprise at the sight of him.

Connel was mad, not mad at the delivery guy, not mad at Chrysa, not even mad at Kat for whatever this package addressed to her was supposed to be. He was mad at the person who sent it…

… and he had a strong inkling as to who it was.

Whoever this individual was, they were going to answer for it. For involving his mother? No, no this will not stand. She wanted him to remain calm, and remind him that it was clearly some kind of trap that was being sprung, but she knew he would leave to follow up on this.

Present Day -

He was there, in full gear. None of them knew of his appearance or identity otherwise (like he wanted), in fact once he went into the conference room, only Kat could walk in. Connel also made sure to inform the Chief that he can see through the two-way mirror in that room (he couldn’t, but the Chief didn’t know that), so if anyone entered the conference room, or the viewing area behind that mirror, there would be legal ramifications.

So he was sitting there, his mask sitting on the table next to the package.

Kat…

Slowly, he pushed the package forward. This was delivered to my mother’s house, addressed to you, and I had to be the one to sign for it….

He didn’t ask, but Connel was clearly not happy about this.

He was pissed, she could tell by the look on his face, but when he slid the package toward her she could tell why. Connel had just lost his father and she knew he wouldn’t take kindly to anybody trying to pull his mother into the fire. But a package? A package sent to her? Who even knew the two were dating? It’s not like they had changed their relationship status on Zinder!

She frowned and stepped forward, reaching her quickly bruising hand toward the package. She closed her eyes, trying to get a sense of the sender with psychometry. Suddenly there was a sour taste in her mouth. She opened her eyes and pulled the package open. Inside was a small holoplayer, which when she clicked on showed a detailed map.

“Connel I’m sorry. There is only one person I can think of who even knows about you and me.”

She felt a lump in her throat and tried to swallow. This was probably going to be some kind of record breaking speed for being dumped, not that she could blame him if that’s what it came too. Daxium had caused nothing but problems since the day they “saved” him.

She glanced back at the map, mostly because she didn’t want to see the anger in his eyes.

“I will find out where it leads.”

Yes. he was mad. Fuming about this.

However…

You have nothing to apologize for. You didn’t send this. He did. Exhaling through his flaring nostrils, his eyes never left hers. He wanted to console her, assure her that everything was okay, but this … this… this “person” involved his mother and that will not go unanswered. Make no mistake, Chrysa can handle herself, but still…

Babe… I’m coming with you. Yeah, he said it. Not for me… not for my mother… but because I’m not letting you have to deal with him alone…

His right hand was not on the table, it was hovering over his Lightblaster.

Well on the bright side he wasn’t dumping her. On the bad side he might be making her an only child. Of course they had no proof this was Dax at all, but Kat couldn’t see who else it would be. Either way she had a feeling this was her fault somehow. Connel wouldn’t be in this mess if she hadn’t stepped into his life. It was like a lesson Katarine never seemed to learn.

“Is your mother okay?” She knew he wouldn’t have left without making sure, but she still wanted to ask. So much for making a good impression on the woman.

She’s mad as well. Mad at the same person I am, but she is more worried about you. No, Kat didn’t make a good impression, but considering her own past, she did not judge. Chrysa understood the circumstances and didn’t hold it against her. She recognized that everyone has their struggles and chose to give her the benefit of the doubt. Despite her initial impression, she was more focused on supporting those around her.

She’s worried I’m going to do something regretful. He smirked… well… half-smirked. She knows me well.

Letting out a sigh, he asked simply, yet directly So, when do we leave?

Katarine smirked and shook her head. “She shouldn’t be worried about me. He needs me alive…. “

That was the simple truth. Katarine knew her twin wouldn’t kill her, at least not yet, but she had no doubt he would burn down everyone who stood in the way of whatever he wanted. The problem was she had no idea what that was anymore. The past was centuries ago and even then Daxium was a cold calculating force to be reckoned with. If he wanted her for something why not just take it on Naboo?

She had a feeling Dax might be the second innocent suspect of the day. Well innocent might not be the right word but this certainly didn’t seem like his style. She had a feeling there was someone else pulling the strings.

“Well I just got fired so your timing is good. We can go now.”

She motioned for him to lead the way, either to the Northstar or his own ship. Either way they had a map to follow and Katarine was going to try her best not to let Connel step into regretful actions while they did.

She was reluctant to accept what was going on, not in his eyes at least.

She knows you are important to me, she knew it before I did. So try and stop her. He would not press, but she was getting used by her brother more and more, and he was getting more than tired of it.

He read the file, he read everything. The case she was working on. The guy she was interrogating didn’t do it, no Connel did not know she was interrogating the dirtbag that she was, he knew something else. When she motioned for them to go, Connel put his mask on and clicked it into place and walked out beside her.

The case you were fired from… he’s the one you want. Connel pointed at the cop who was trying to talk her down. The time he’s been on it with no results? He’s dumb, or dirty. He gave some details to helped his case.

Letting out a sigh, he asked simply, yet directly So, when do we leave?

Katarine fished her datapad out of her pocket and pulled up messages. It took her a moment to figure out but eventually she sent the message to the Chief. She might be fired, but she wasn't going to let a family annihilator go unchecked, especially if what Connel thought was true and it was a dirty cop. There was nothing worse than a dirty cop. Okay well maybe Daxium's singing voice but nothing else. The Chief might not like her because she was a Jedi but she knew he'd take her message seriously. For now that was all she could do for this investigation. They had other pressing matters to attend to.

She knows you are important to me, she knew it before I did. So try and stop her.

"I guess that's what they mean when they say a mother knows." She felt her cheeks blush a little as they walked down the hall. Connel was impatient to get started and she couldn't blame him. Hitting his home like that was too close and unacceptable.

Together they left the station and made for the dock where the Northstar waited for them. It was just as baron as last time, though there appeared to be a few more dog toys in the dog bed. Kat hadn't gotten the chance to see Buster in so long. She hopped she could give him these things soon.

She pulled up the map again and studied it. "Dahrtag.... the tomb world. Well that isn't ominous at all." Even as she spoke the ship started to calculate and prepare for lift off. It wouldn't take them long to get there.

"Are you okay?" Now that they were alone her voice was softer and concerned. She could tell he had been mulling over more than just this map for a while. She wouldn't try to force it out of him... but she wanted him to know she was here if he needed her.

They went to her ship “The Northstar”, but amid the walk, he was on comms, contacting his. His astromech droid “BRAD” specifically. He called the droid to lock on to his signal and follow, to which the helpful droid was all too happy to do so.

Set to these coordinates. He offered them, once they were inside. The coordinates would lead them to the "Enterprise" Station Ship. Gaudy, but something he had built a long time ago as a sort of “home away from home away from home”, no that’s not a typo. It literally was a ship that acted like a space station, with several docking ports. Once they locked on, and inside the larger vessel, coordinates for Dahrtag were transferred to the main computer.

Just in time for one of the other residents of the ship.

Buster came running up and doing his happy dance between the two of them. Connel smiled for the first time in days as he crouched down and gave scratches. Hey buddy! Yeah! I missed you too! Yeah! Yeah! Howdy! Look who I brought with me!

She had asked him if he was okay, and at first he didn’t really answer, just nodded. Then once they were comfortable… I’m okay. Just been through a lot lately, and then this package to my mother’s house… Buster checked on him, putting a paw on his knee, to which Caltin massaged the top of his head.

I hope… for your sake… that your brother is not behind this. You don’t need any more crap from him right now. He also did not want to speak of his personal feelings on the matter, because she probably already knew.

Buster was a sight for sore eyes and she lit up entirely when he came running towards them. He seemed genuinely happy to see her as she pet his ears. "I missed you Buster." She laughed as he licked her nose. She made a mental note to make sure she gave the little pup the gifts she got him before this was over, right as Buster put his paw on Connel. He was worried about his friend and Katarine couldn't blame him.

I hope… for your sake… that your brother is not behind this. You don't need any more crap from him right now.

"It doesn't make sense for him to be behind this. If he wanted something from me he would have just taken it on Naboo, and the last thing he'd want is to bring us together again."

She reached for the dyad in the Force, and felt anger, frustration, and her twin pull away, but it wasn't enough to truly tell what was going on. She frowned and shook her head. She knew how Connel felt about Dax, and she could tell that Connel thought she was too easy on Dax but this truly did not feel like her twin.

"We can always track him down and interrogate him, but the map seems to want us to go to Dahrtag."

He couldn’t honestly speak on her observation of who might have sent this. Sure, he DID feel like this was her brother, feeling like brothers don’t act like that, but he was not one, to speak of. He was an only child. Sure, Corazona von Ascania Corazona von Ascania was like a “little sister” to him(that is the only way he could explain why he was protective), and he did have an older sister in Alyscia, but she had passed away over eight hundred years ago(does this really need to be expanded on?), but really, he had only himself. His instincts may have pointed, but his mouth remained closed.

Whatever happens, happens. If he mistreats you again though, brother or not… As the ship jumped to Lightspeed he said this, not in a threatening manner, but in the manner of a man looking out for the welfare of someone he cared about.

Then he hopped up. I’m hungry, you hungry? He was looking at Kat, but Buster knew those words too and hopped up.

Bark

You’re always hungry… grrr Yes you are! He smirked, as this was their thing. Then he looked back at Kat. Meal? Sandwich? Bark Connel looked back down at Buster with faux exasperation. YES![/I][/I]

"Dax is always going to mistreat me. It's how he is. As long as he stays away from everybody else it's fine."

Katarine wasn't sure what to say to Connel to convince him this wasn't Dax because truthfully she didn't know if it was. All she knew were her own investigative instincts and they were screaming that this was someone else. Maybe whey they followed the map they would find more answers? Or more likely it was a trap and they were headed for trouble.

Bark

Katarine grinned at Buster. "Okay lets get food." She laughed at hos happy that made Buster.

Clearly not buying what she was selling, Connel did not press, he just let out a sigh as he went into the kitchen and started putting things together. He grabbed a few ingredients from the fridge and began chopping vegetables, his mind racing with thoughts. The tension in the air was palpable, but he chose to focus on the task at hand, letting the rhythmic sound of the knife on the cutting board drown out his frustration.

All, I will say is that if he does so around me, I will be standing between the two of you. If you don’t want me to, just say so, that’s fine, but… I’m not going to just watch that anymore. If he’s going to mistreat you, he can’t do it around me… and if I see you after him and you’re scarred? He shrugged, and let the rest go, having said his peace and, not really pushing the matter further. If there was any question about "what" she was to him, that would answer it. Buster was normally right next to him, waiting for whatever dropped on the floor, but he was happy to be around Kat right now. This let Connel do his thing with preparing a meal, and of course tossing a piece of meat or cheese to the pup once in awhile.

What are you expecting we’ll experience?

The atmosphere was thick and a little worrying. It was as if they were in a fight but not really in one. Connel was clearly upset, and she didn’t know what to do to help that. Buster was the only one who seemed at ease. He was circling her feet until she picked him up and kissed on him, then let him down so he could go scoop up dropped food.

As she watched Connel she realized that cooking seemed to relax him. Maybe that’s why he suggested they do it. He still sounded gruff and tense but the chopping and measuring was helping.

Filing that thought away for another day she took a seat on the stool across from where he was working.

“Truthfully I doubt we will see Daxium again. Unless he wants something we don’t exactly keep in touch.” She felt a pang as she said that but brushed it off. At least he was alive so there was still a chance at a family relationship. Sure.

“As for the map… I don’t know. The only people who know me in this galaxy are you and Buster and a few odd Jedi. Unless….”

She bit her lip, lost in thought for a moment. “Well the prison I was in on Naboo… Black Mire. There were other prisoners frozen down there as well. Many were put away by me so I guess some of them would know me…. “

She sounded skeptical. In her experience criminals tended to avoid cops, not string them along on a treasure hunt.

“Is there anybody in your life that might pull a stunt like this?”

When she mentioned being in prison, he stopped, clearly shocked at her statement, but just as quickly he shrugged it off. Perhaps she was undercover. Perhaps it was related to her work, and thus she was put in there for something. Besides, she was an adult, and a Jedi Master, if he wanted her to trust in who he was, he had to do the same.

When she asked him if anyone was on his side, Connel shook his head.

No one that would know my connection to you There was more than one reason he wore the mask, and the different gear. There was the need to keep others around him safe, not to mention himself when around other Jedi. It was a way to protect his identity and maintain the secrecy of his mission. The mask also served as a constant reminder of his duty, shielding him from distractions and ensuring his focus remained on the task at hand.[/COLOR]

The only ones who can connect the dots, are my mother, and your brother.

He went back to cooking.

Katarine caught his slight surprise as she mentioned the prison. They had discussed her past before but she hadn’t mentioned that Black Mire was a prison. She mentally kicked herself for leaving that part out.

He seemed confident nobody in his past was connected to this and Katarine sighed. Of course it was her. She wasn’t good for anybody she was around and here already history was repeating itself. She felt her shoulders sag and ran her fingers through her hair.

“The only way I know to contact Dax is through the Force. I can give it a shot if you want.”

Now it was Connel’s turn to notice her shift in personality. The sagging shoulders, the nerves, all of it. He didn’t need to sense it, and while he was NO expert in the feelings of women, a Miraluka cut off from the Force could see this. Panting his hands on the counter, and squaring his shoulders, he looked at her for a moment, then put what he was making in the oven.

Then he went back to his stance.

Whatcha drinkin’? Hopefully she wasn’t looking for alcohol, he didn’t have any, never does. Of course, Buster was bugging him for scraps, so he looked down with an eyebrow up… this his routine.

Bark

You’re still here?

Leg bat and a “kiss” Of course the scraps went onto the small footpad on the floor. This was their thing after all, and he looked back at Kat.

I’m angry about what happened. Fuming, but this has no bearing on you, as far as I’m concerned, we’re good. That never changed. I’m angry because my mother was involved in this. Most of all, I’m angry for you. You don’t deserve any of this, and it bothers me that you seem to feel like you deserve it all. Don’t bother with contacting him. Whatcha drinkin'?

"Just water, thanks." She watched with an amused expression as he pretended to be surprised that Buster was still begging, before dropping more food for the puppy.

I'm angry about what happened. Fuming, but this has no bearing on you, as far as I'm concerned, we're good. That never changed. I'm angry because my mother was involved in this. Most of all, I'm angry for you. You don't deserve any of this, and it bothers me that you seem to feel like you deserve it all. Don't bother with contacting him. We'll find out what we find out when we find out and do it together.

Katarine nodded, offering a subdued and sympathetic smile.

"I'm sorry your mother was dragged into this. And if this isn't my brother… then whoever it is must have gotten information from Dax that we were together. But…" Her face tightened into a small frown and she lifted a shoulder in a helpless shrug. "That doesn't sound like him either. Daxium has never had a friend in his life. He's never been the type to confide in anyone. I can't imagine him… gossiping."

She tried to conjure the image in her mind, but it felt wrong, forced, like a misdrawn memory. Yes, he could have changed. Stasis had changed her, though slowly. It had taken her more than a year to fully recover from hibernation sickness, while her brother had fought his way back in barely ten months. Physically, he had always been powerful. But mentally? Daxium had never been someone surrounded by allies or confidants. He was a loner, shaped by both circumstance and destiny. His mutation made him dangerous or at least that was the justification he always used to keep others at arm's length.

The only reason either of them had escaped that hospital at all was the Force. Without it…

Her breath caught as a sudden realization hit her. If her body had been discovered on Naboo after the prison fell, then surely other prisoners had been found as well. Not all of them had been Jedi or even Force-sensitive. Many would have been fighting hibernation sickness just as she had, perhaps in the same wards, perhaps even at the same time as Daxium. She hadn't checked patient logs or tracked down the inmates who vanished after the collapse of the New Jedi Order. There had been no sightings. No whispers. Nothing to suggest their survival.

But what if…

"It must be another former inmate," she murmured, voice sharpening with clarity. "No one else would know who I am. I'll request the patient records from the hospital. Maybe something, or someone, will turn up."

She pulled her datapad out of her pocket again and started the tedious process of finding her messages. Really what had been so bad about the old technology? Why all the new apps and interfaces and complete time wasting garbage?

As she typed she eyed Connel over her datapad, a slight relief on her face that he wasn't upset with her. Her shoulders were still tense however and that was because she was starting to put the clues together. If any of the inmates from Black Mire survived she would have to track them down. They were some of the galaxies most dangerous prisoners, at least in her day, and she didn't want to think what trouble they could get up to now.

"So you like to cook?" The attempt to brighten the conversation fell flat, but at least she was trying. Buster tilted his head quizzically at her, as if saying wow lame comment. Katarine felt her lip twitch upwards into a smile.

He wasn’t going to apologize for being angry about this, but Connel did feel bad that Jedi standing across from him was feeling responsible. As he went and grabbed her a bottle of Elba Water, Connel grabbed a glass and filled it with ice, putting the two together in front of her, he grabbed Buster’s water dish (one of many) and filled it as well.

Buster had a curious look at first, but dove in and grabbed a piece, crunching on it. The look lightened the mood better than any attempt either of them made.

He let her theorize about who might be behind this intently, sipping on his blue milk nodding. Things were still tense, but at least she was investigating, it was what she does best. There was really nothing else that could be said there.

We’ll figure it out. There wasn’t much else, as his dish he was making would not be ready for a little bit. So there was the odd tension still, then she asked.

Father taught me. It was one of the things he liked to do when not “Jedi”ing, for lack of a better term. Taught also as a way to make friends. Not because we couldn’t, or that people would only like us for that, but there was something about gathering around a kitchen.
