There, he developed an interest in machinery and military vehicles as a young man, finding comfort in machines that operated according to predictable rules. People were complicated. Machines were not. Following the rise of the Empire, Lothar found himself drawn toward Imperial military service. The Empire's emphasis on order and structure appealed strongly to his worldview, and he eventually enlisted. Lothar proved himself particularly capable with heavy machinery and was selected for specialised training as an AT-AT pilot.
Operating an AT-AT suited him almost perfectly. The machine required discipline, patience and an understanding of its considerable weight and power.
