BORKEEN BELT
LINA STATION

Calina had been given very specific instructions at the start of her new life. On the off chance that the Sith Empire was watching her assets, she could not set foot on Lina Station again. But it had been sometime since the now hapan noble had been in trouble and her shuttle that approached via carefully calculated vectors, was not carrying Calina Ovmar, but Calina Djo.

Coincidental that the the CEO’s new aide shared the same name as her, this one was rumoured to have an intense dislike for men, time wasters and was exceptionally well informed. Calina smiled to herself as the station came into view.

Rumours were so much more fun when you started them yourself.

She was not alone in her approach, a number of other board members and officials had been coming quietly over the last few days. A risky thing to do, anyone watching this area of space might have noticed the spike in activity, so some came among regular supply drops, or weeks in advance, but all the same they did as they had been instructed by their CEO and converged.

The purpose of the meeting had not been explained, and questions had been raised as to why it could not be done via holocomms. Calina had pointed out the lack of security on such a way of communicating and those who had worked under Anaya Fen, opted not to test her daughters patience.

Apoleia Incorporated board members would meet with her aide, end of discussion.

The boardroom fell silent as Calina entered, sporting a black pant suit, heels and a folder tucked under her arm. “Thank you for coming, Ladies and Gentlemen.” she greeted, not bothering to introduce herself, the tension had risen in the room and that was enough of an indicator for her to know that they recognised their CEO’s new aide. Time to make rumour truth.

She laid the folder on the table and opened it, beginning to pass numerous copies of a single document around the oval table. “Our wonderful Chief Executive passes on her apologies that she could not be here in person, for today will be the beginning of a new era for Lina Industries and Apoleia Inc.”

She took her seat, let them run their eyes over the agenda, watched the differing emotions pass over their faces; surprise, fury, pleasure. Regardless of their opinions, every board member would leave here content with the decisions made, or they would not leave at all.

“This is preposterous!” That was the fifth time those words had fallen out of Veeto’s mouth. Of course, he stood to lose the most by shutting down the smuggling business, but it was an essential action as part of the merger. Those who were employed directly by Apoleia Inc would be redistributed to move supplies to and from Lina Station and also to deliver supplies to the Clubs and Casino’s.

“We’re simply not making enough profit to sustain it as a business aspect, those we employ as contractors can find work elsewhere easy enough, some of our own employees will, of course, have to be let go, the remainder, will be reallocated.”

Veeto’s fist thumped the table. “No!” Calina raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. “You require all of us to agree for this merger to go ahead. I refuse. This is-”

“Preposterous.” Calina finished for him in a bored tone. Her pen tapped idly on the table, turned in her fingers and tapped again. “Much like your skimming of the profits, has been preposterous.” tap, turn, tap, turn.

“I--What--How dare you!?”

Tap turn tap turn.

“Is that your final stance on the matter?” Calina’s expression did not waver before the rodians obvious fury and fear. Tap, turn, tap, turn, faster and faster the pen went, the only outward expression of her own silent and far more deadly rage.

“Yes.”

The pen stopped. “Very well, you may leave.”

“What?”

“You may leave. You have my permission to leave this room and go and do whatever it is you do when you are not employed. You’re fired.”

He was on his feet, the others around the table were opting to avoid looking at him, shrinking in their seats wishing very much they could not hear or see any of this, but equally full of glee that the were. No one liked a smuggler who pretended to be a legitimate businessman.

“You do not have that authority!”

Calina reached into a pocket and placed a small holoprojector on the table and activated it. An image of herself appeared, or rather, and image of Calina Ovmar, prior to the facial reconstruction that strictly speaking, only two people in the galaxy knew about.

“I hereby, give Calina Djo the full authority to do as she see fit in order to preserve the company. HEr authority matches mine in that she can reorganise, recruit and let go of any people within Apoleia In, and Lina Industries as necessary.”

The holorecording fell silent and deactivated. “You may leave, Veeto.” she reiterated into the stunned silence. After a heart beat, he slammed his fist against the table. “I am a member of this board, you cannot and will not fire me.”

Calina cocked her head and reached anhand inside her jacket. In one smooth motion she withdrew a holdout blaster. A flash of red, a scream of pain and Veeto was slumped over the table dead.

“We shall adjourn, for now.” she said the holdout blaster had vanished inside her jacket once more. “Shall we meet again in an hour?”

She visited the Research and Design department while the board members busied themselves with gossip and recovering their nerves. They’d be scheming already working out a way to make this work in their favour, or better still, incriminating this aide to the CEO and ensuring her own removal.

Fools, she thought as she ran her eyes over the latest designs that were waiting for the merger before hitting the production line. She wasn’t really listening to the shipwright, what he said wasn’t important really. Still, she smiled and nodded where appropriate and praised his hard work and dedication to the company.

Had she become like her mother? Wasn’t it she who killed her own staff in rage? No, she told herself as she took the long route round the station back to the board room. Veeto’s death was calculated, she had know how he would react, she had known that in order to secure the remaining votes, she needed for him to die. Her rage had not been a factor in deciding his death, merely a product of his grating personality and it was purely coincidental that it had risen as it had. Calina was in control, Anaya had never been in control.

There was a definitive air of fear when she re-entered the boardroom. Any other day, she would have ignored it, but right now in her brief moment of self doubt it reminded her of the reaction whenever her mother had entered a room on the Femme Fatale.

Veeto had been removed, any mess cleaned up. Calina heaved a sigh and settled back into her chair. “I must offer my apologies for the days events.” she began, resting her elbows on the table and weaving her fingers together. “Veeto’s actions sealed his fate long before his refusal to accept the merger. The rest of you will of course be perfectly safe, for none of you are so foolish as to take what does not belong to you, after all.”

Three people shifted uncomfortably. She expected a sharp spike in their profits over the next few months, otherwise they would meet the same fate as Veeto. She did not need to voice this as her eyes moved from one face to the next, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she noted excessive perspiration.

“Now,” she continued, unclasping her hands and making a point of checking the agenda, “Where were we?”

Clara, cleared her throat and leaned forward. “We were discussing the benefits of the merger.” there was a rapid murmuring of agreement. Calina resisted the triumphant smile.

Two more hours of careful negotiations, of toothy smiles that concealed venomous tongues and it was done, the terms had been agreed. Some of the board members would be taking a step back, retiring almost, thought with a very solid package to lean upon. The rest were given new responsibilities, their power shifted playing to their strengths in a way Anaya had never managed.

She held brief discussions and allowed a little debate over the companies new name and while some liked Apoleia, Miss Djo had made it clear that considering her relation the her mother, Miss Ovmar wanted to erase her as much as possible. So Lina Incorporated was the final decision.

It was so very easy to make them two seperate people. So easy to be someone she wasn’t. Calina waited for the rest of the board members to leave over the coming weeks before boarding her own transport. The pilot greeting her cheerfully as always.

“Time to go home, I think Captain.”

“Certainly, Miss Djo.”
