PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Able to disrupt sensor returns, allowing a ship to avoid detection or enemy weapons locks.

 • Able to disguise a sensor signature

 • Able to counter enemy jamming

 • Able to help provide a picture of the battlefield to a commander
Strengths:

 • Able to Jam enemy communications, either through a broad spectrum jamming of all available frequencies, or a targeted jamming of specific frequencies as picked out by the Courier Communications Scanner.

 • Able to crack enemy encryption, allowing a commander access to enemy communications and plans.

 • Able to distort the sensor signature of the ship it is built into, making it harder for enemy missiles, fighters and capital ships to acquire the ship as a target.

 • Able to provide alternate targets through the use of ECM decoys.

 • Able to use the power of the Mathematics droid brain to narrow down the location of enemy jamming, isolating it to an area of space which can then be targeted.
Weaknesses:

 • Jamming works best on passive detection systems, a powerful enough active sensor system will burn through jamming to show the target beneath.

 • Sufficiently capable encryption systems cannot be defeated, or cannot be defeated in time for the battle meaning that even if you know your enemy are talking, you have no idea what it is they’re saying.

 • Reliant on ships systems and power, if the ship is hit by an ion cannon or power systems are damaged the ECM can be knocked offline leaving the ship very visible and vulnerable.

 • Not Stealth: The ECM can distort a sensor signature, making it harder to locate, but it’s not stealth and there will still be a weak return. While many systems would disregard it as a ghost, a sufficiently capable system or operator will be able to spot the return.
DESCRIPTION

Shields and Armour have always been the mainstay of a ship's defences, the stronger your shields, the thicker your armour the less likely you were to die. However, what’s better than that being able to fend off enemy attacks? Never getting hit in the first place. This was the maxim which Locke and Key Mechanic’s engineers settled on when designing the Loki Electronics Warfare System.

While there were a variety of ECM systems available on the market, Locke and Key wanted to introduce their own entry for their future builds of ships by the company. Much like the Freyja Communications System, they went back to basics, to what the system needed to do. Electronics Warfare, at its most basic, is defined as controlling the EM spectrum to deny your opponent information while ensuring your own unimpeded access. To this end, the Loki takes 3 main approaches to Electronics Warfare, Electronic Attack, Electronic Protection and Electronic Warfare Support.

Electronic Attack

Electronic Attack, or ECM, is designed to degrade your opponent’s combat capability. To succeed in this the Loki employs a variety of different jammers, with an ability to jam both communications and sensors. The Loki can employ a wide frequency jamming, or through the use of the Courier Communications Scanner, they can identify the specific communications channels which their opponents were using, jamming their communications while providing others with unimpeded communications. The Jammers built into the Loki weren’t just capable of jamming communications but also featured sensor jammers designed to disrupt an opponent’s sensors. Which this doesn’t allow a ship to disappear like a stealth system would do. Instead, it had the ability to disrupt and disguise sensor returns, making it harder for an enemy ship to see you on their sensors, or to acquire a targeting lock. The Loki also features an EM Emitter which acts to alter the sensor signature of a ship, while this can’t hide you, a warship can be made to look like a freighter to long-range sensors, of course, a closer inspection would reveal discrepancies and a visual inspection would see through it entirely, but warships rarely put that much effort into the activities of a single freighter. The System also comes with a set of 4 decoys, each of which could be launched to provide an alternative sensor ghost of the ship. The Decoys again will not fool a visual inspection or a detailed analytical examination, but for a quick look in the middle of battle, they can be an effective distraction.

Electronic Attack isn’t just focused on disrupting enemy ships, but also the missiles they will be throwing at you. To that end the Loki comes equipped with sensor scramblers, little turrets designed to emit an EM attack designed to specifically jam Enemy Missiles, preventing them from hitting their targets and making it easier for point defences to pick them off.

Electronic Protection

Electronic Protection is described as the means by which you protect your assets from an enemies use of the electromagnetic spectrum, in a word ECCM. This can be accomplished through a series of techniques such as Pulse Compression or chirping where the sensor pulse is modulated to vary the frequency used by the sensor within a single pulse. Since a return generated by an ECM module will not have the chirp, it is a way to distinguish jammed signals from true returns. Another technique used can be frequency hopping, switching from one frequency to another, and only looking for returns on a specific frequency during that window, since a jammer would take a moment to realise the frequency has changed this creates a discrepancy which can alert the user. Polarization filters can also be applied to the sensor signals, which can cause a signal loss if the jamming does not match the polarization applied to the system. The Mathematics Droid Brain integrated into the Loki is responsible for enacting and interpreting the various forms of ECCM as ordered, raising any discrepancies to the attention of the user.

Electronic Warfare Support

The final Pillar of the Loki system wasn’t about directly impacting or protecting yourself from an enemy, but rather about providing information to the commander of a battle. Through a variety of means which have already been mentioned. The Courier Communications Scanner allows the system to determine which frequencies are being used to communicate on, which allows other sensors to attempt to locate nodes on the surface while the mathematics droid brain attempts to crack the encryption being used. If the encryption is broken, the slicer droid can attempt to use the now vulnerable communications channel to send viruses through the communications system, or just listen in on their commands. The various forms of Electronics Protection also allow the system to attempt to localise the source of any jamming to an area, the information to be used by the commanded to make his battle plans. By using the Loki, or a similar system, aboard multiple vessels it is possible to more effectively triangulate sources of ECM and communications, which allows a theatre commander a greater degree of knowledge and control.

Between those three pillars, the engineers at Locke and Key believe they have created an effective and capable Electronics Warfare Package for use by Locke and Key and their affiliates.
