Intent: An aid to astrogation, good for rediscovering lost planets.
Development Thread: None
Manufacturer: Mara D'Lessio Merrill, Stargo Forge Works
Model: Lifeweb Spyglass
Affiliation: Personal; select contacts and customers
Modularity: No
Production: Semi-Unique
Material: Bronzium, nullification resin, thaissen crystal lenses

Strengths:
  • If pointed at a starfield and fully extended, the spyglass can determine which stars harbor life
  • If pointed at a star system and partially extended, the spyglass can determine which planets or moons harbor life
  • If pointed at a planet and fully collapsed, the spyglass can determine which portions of the surface harbor life
Weaknesses:
  • The spyglass can only be used in space, or on a totally uninhabited planet
  • Nearby, significant Force use can cause interference, despite the nullification resin tube lining
  • Useless for detail work or anything nearby; absolutely irrelevant to spotting Force anything other than large amounts of life at long ranges

Description: To use a Lifeweb Spyglass, go into space and point it at a starfield, then concentrate on the Force, ideally through paths of instinctive astrogation. Faint blue sparks will mark the stars that harbor life in significant quantities. Go to a star in question and examine the system's planets and moons; the spyglass will reveal which planetary bodies have an ecosystem. Orbit a planet in question and the spyglass will show a faint blue sheen over the portions of the planet that have significant amounts of life.

The spyglass functions due to an extrapolation of thaissen crystal's ability to glow when in the presence of the Force. Inside the bronzium telescope, a sheath of nullification resin insulates the crystals from most Force disturbances and presences. Ideally, the crystals are then disproportionately influenced by the viewer, the distant stars, and the instinctive astrogation that connects them.

The spyglass's effect is comparable in some ways to the technique known as Life Web, which involves detection of large concentrations of certain species from immense distances. However, the spyglass is far less specific; it can't even distinguish between an ecumenopolis and a planet covered in algae. To the spyglass, an ecosystem is an ecosystem; life is life.

Note that, if used by a Darksider, the image overlay tends to shift red due to the specific properties of thaissen crystal.
