Learning Compassion (Matsu, Tahira)

A heavily reinforced building protruded from the surface of Mundas' moon, and a small landing bay barely fit the Oneiromancer. Two lonely old X-Wings crammed up against the side wall. Je'gan's starship looked, on the surface, like it cost more than anything in about a parsec, but the arrangements belowground gave that the lie.

"This is the place," he said, settling his hat on his head. "Time to learn some compassion for your fellow sentient."

To a sensitive, to a Master, this barren region felt like a small and angry town. In point of fact, the small and angry town was belowground. Armed guards waited for them at the top of a turbolift.

"Shall we?"

Matsu stood with her hands behind her back as she walked down the ramp of the ship. She wasn't going to question where they were, or fully dismiss it. She let her eyes flick around the area feeling the anger, her face remained passive but only because she didn't know what he was hoping for. Her brow did burrow while her senses flared in the force to search and feel more of it. A simple ball of anger wasn't surprising it was the deeper emotions and her words came out.

"Lets proceed then Master Je'gan, Master Solo."

She hair was up in a top knot letting her neck be exposed with the robes. She didn't need any of her weapons and hadn't been allowed to bring them. Which made sense she was the one in rehab. Why give them to her, she would have liked to keep her parasol minus the sword in the handle though... "May I ask where we are, I do not think I have been here before."

She was more worried about her husband than she was their prisoner. Keen eyes snuck a glance at Je’gan as they walked down the ramp to the guards. She felt it all on the battlefield: his anger, the sudden loss of life, and the smugness in the sith they fought. Many of those reactions were thanks to the woman in their current custody.

She had missed the trial but here she was.

Walking close to him, she kept her voice for his ears only. “I’m surprised you haven’t force stripped her already. What are your plans here...”

Sentence was cut short as she turned her eyes to Matsu.

I'm going to show her a mirror, he replied grimly, as the armed escort surrounded them. The repulsor platform began to descend past the floor, revealing an immense, dark pit. Tunnels and caverns had been chopped out of the walls of the pit, and crude rope ladders and wooden platforms made connections. The anger swelled around him, but he kept it out with an icy calm.

Above them, a blast door closed. The platform continued to descend.

"By your actions and your words before the Council at your hearing, Master Ike, you displayed no evidence of repentance for your war crimes. I brought you here to show you yourself in a mirror -- stretch out, sense these prisoners, their unrepentant minds. If you are to be executed or stripped of the Force, it will most likely be after you have been brought to a point where you can take responsibility for your actions and feel guilt over them. It will most likely be after you stop making rationalizations, even to yourself.

"No war crimes tribunal ever convened ended with 'That's all right, so long as you promise never to do it again.' Welcome to the consequences of your actions, Master Ike. Welcome to the Pit."

The feeling when the doors opened added to her and Matsu visibly showed more reactions. Her body stiffened before the doors closed and she spoke after the jedi master. "Prison is not a mirror to me Master Je'gan, I was born in a prison while the systems sky painted the swirling snow red." She still showed fear, it was far more oppressive then Prison 41 and her hands fidgeted behind her back. She hated it there when she had gone back, she had been alone sent on a mission and then Chora had been brought into her cell and tossed in as well, her friend and former master had decided to follow her into that place as a show of support.

As Je'gan's actions brought her into another prisoner she darted her eyes back and forth looking for that smile if only for comfort while her hands had drifted to the crystal that wasn't there. Her navel piercing was with her other stuff at his discretion to return. "Last time I was sent into a prison it was for a mission, the force has a strange sense a humor."

Je'gan nodded to the leader of the guards, and the hovering platform paused, suspended maybe thirty metres above the floor and the prisoners. The horizontal blast doors were shut, maybe a hundred metres overhead.

"Born in prison? Well, if the Republic's justice has its way, you're probably going to die in one, too. Convenient. Do tell her the story of how you deliberately murdered roughly three thousand seven hundred civilians with the Force, and then showed no remorse to the Council when brought to trial. I'd love to see how the story goes."

That was an approximate count, and the real number was anyone's guess. Between the prisoners killed by her earthquakes, and the death toll of the tornados, thousands had died; another million or so had been enraged by her natural disasters and the deaths of their friends, and had assaulted everything and anything, including heavily armed emplacements.

Many, many more than 3700 had died that day.

Matsu stayed quiet while both of them spoke their peace and she moved to look over the platform. To peer down and she spoke turning her eyes to look upon them both. "I also made love to my fellow jedi in it but no remorse? Is that what you believe? That I do not mourn their deaths. That I do not feel the lose of life? We all grieve in different ways Master je'gan, I will carry that pain with me and it will become my burden to take. To hold and to have weigh me down but it is mine. I caused it, I have not been one for sharing my troubles, I do not burden others. I will hopefully at the end of all this be able to seek my own atonement for their deaths."

Focus was on Matsu as she spoke. She didn’t really understand what making love to someone had to do with the context of the question. But she let it go. The rest of the woman’s response was by far, the most important thing she had said since meeting.

The echo of the closing blast doors above was daunting, even to a free woman.

How did her husband even know about places like these? She found herself shooting Je’gan another sideways glance, as if meeting a part of him for the first time.

“Do you have any last wishes?” Gaze returned to Master Ike, sparing the woman the title of master in case the other prisoners heard them from below. Being known as a jedi in these bowls would likely be a quick death sentence.

He'd caught Tahira's look. In point of fact, he knew this place...professionally. A decent chunk of his last five hundred years had been spent as guardian of the rebuilt Prism. Je'gan cleared his throat.

"If you meant that, I suspect it would have come up at your hearing instead of endless justifications. I'm not an unmerciful man, Master Ike. The choice is yours. You can go into general population, or we can take you into the section designed for Force-users. Umak Leth-model Universal Energy Cage inside a cell, with a stasis field. You'll remain conscious, immobile, and cut off from the Force -- basically, carbon-freeze. Some would consider it torturous; others would consider it meditative."

"You saw the trial Master je'gan, Councilor Dragonsflame is... Young and I fear for his view in the jedi. His disgust at the notion of jedi killing was what I expected. I will take your kindness of a force cage, perhaps meditation is needed in this situation. Just please make sure my daughters are safe, they already lost one mother I do not intend to fail and leave them alone." Her face looked around and then to Tahira. "That is my request, watch them until I return."

Until I return.

She kept her mouth shut. Would she return? An internal shiver ran down her spine. She’d almost rather be fighting the sith lord, Kaine, again, than linger in a place like this, knowing what they were about to do to Matsu. Even if it was justice.

Her children were now orphans.

“The council will look after them as long as they stay within the council’s custody.” Her voice was surprisingly gentle as the platform shifted to the force-sensitive holding area. Those kids had a hard road ahead of them. She looked at Je’gan, clearly uncomfortable. But she didn’t say a word. She was here to support him.

There were some who would call this punishment too kind for the deaths of thousands of innocents. Je'gan wasn't sure whether he was one of them. Either way, he nodded to the guards, and the platform descended to the floor. Their weapons warded back the inmates, and while half the guards held the platform, the other half escorted Matsu to an immense turadium blast door. It opened at a signal from the command station above, revealing rows upon rows of cells. Each held an energy cage; each active energy cage, some but not all of the Pit's complement, held a paralyzed Forcer. The guards stopped before a cell. Its bars opened, then the cage energized and opened, ready to receive her. Once she entered, the stasis field would take hold.

"Last words?" Je'gan said.

Matsu looked at the area around her continuing forward to the cell while she undid the kimono and stood with the sarashi around her chest. Her look back at Je'gan while straightening herself was still neutral, she was scared but he wasn't here for her fear. The idea of the force leaving her body was scary as she used it to support herself more then most realized. Her muscles were thrashed and body a wreck from when she fought last time. Now she just moved to the center of the room and breathed deeply letting her mind empty of the emotions she felt from the other prisoners. "Only that I hope you will stay with the jedi and help them learn, even if you dislike me they will need someone with your eyes to point out. The council will need a voice of perspective."

Je'gan gave a sharp nod, and the guards stepped forward to usher her into the energy cage. The stasis field would sustain her indefinitely, regardless of the Force she had used to keep herself well. There would be no repeat of the time when he had found himself carbon-frozen while using the Force to bind his spirit to his body. He'd very quickly found himself unconscious and then dead, in that order. A long story.

"Ponder well, Master Ike," he said as the guards made ready to shut her in. "I'll be back in due course to see how far you've come."

If she felt anything, it didn’t show on her face. But inside, there was a turmoil of emotions. Giving a curt-nod to Matsu, she left the way she came in, with Je’gan.

Je’gan was a far better person to follow-up with Ike.

Leaning into her husband, she finally broke the silence between them. “I never want to come back here, again.” It was a simple realization. She was glad they had a long flight back. It would give her time to mull over some thoughts.
