DESCRIPTION
It was decided during the second Wolf Moot that the bearer of the title of Great Wolf should be granted a token of his office, that none may dispute his authority or status as leader of the pack. Able to secure enough phrik, known as starmetal to the people of Midvinter, and brought to one of the few blacksmiths skilled enough to work such a rare material, they presented the completed sword Krakenmaw — named such on account of its maw-like crossguard — to Thirdas at the subsequent Moot in an elaborate ceremony.

The Son of the Lion took up the sword, and as such cemented his role as the first Great Wolf, becoming a unifying force to the burgeoning warrior order. It was while holding Krakenmaw aloft that Thirdas declared the formation of the Great Companies, each to be led by a chosen Wolf Lord with deep knowledge of their respective home province. Northerners, Southerners, and Easterners elected their own, and thus three men knelt before him to be knighted by the very blade they'd had forged, with the Great Wolf himself taking command of the West.

As a gesture of humility, Thirdas also declared that any man or woman might issue a challenge at any time for the right to wield Krakenmaw, and with it the authority of Great Wolf. He did not consider the sword his property, but that it belongs to the Ulfhednar as a whole, and should pass on to a worthy successor among their ranks upon his death.

Though he favours the use of his mighty greataxe Helwinter, Thirdas bears Krakenmaw as a worthy alternative into every fray, and is never seen without it when appearing as the Great Wolf.
