Knowing one's place

(OOC: Woah... deep o.o)

Luke had been having his own nightmare, one that had frequented his dreams ever since the incident. It wasn't a scene, per se, but rather a collection of thoughts, feelings, and images. Fire. It always started with fire. The crackling sound of flame against wood. Screaming echoe though his head. A boy's voice.

"Get her out of here!"
"Emily!"

His vision flashed red, and he was faced with the burning husk of his house, him on his knees with no family to turn to. Only the echoing screams of his sister when she was pulled out of the flames, and silence when he found out she was gone. Even more so when his mother was pronounced dead. He woke up instantaneously, tears streaking his already wet cheeks. Looking up where he expected to see Katar asleep, he instead saw her by the window, shivering. Getting up silently, he walked closer to her, only to realize that she was in fact crying. Wrapping his arms around her, he began stroking her head softly like she had done to him earlier. "Shh... It's okay", he whispered softly. "It's okay, I'm here. It's okay." He continued to repeat th words over and over again, hoping to calm her down.

Katar was too distraught to care when Luke embraced her. She buried her head into his chest, wrapping her arms around his back. As he stroked her hair and whispered soothing words to her, she began to feel an odd calmness fall over her. It wasn't like the calmness of the wild that she was accustomed to feeling. This was different. It was more....... Human. Though it was strange to her, she accepted it. Katar could feel the tears falling to Luke's shirt collar. He was crying, too. So, she began to mimic his movement, stroking his back as he did her head. She made small shushing noises to him as he did to her. They stood at the window for a long time, just crying and comforting one another.

Luke sniffles softly as he stopped himself from crying. He wanted to comfort Katar, and knew he couldn't very well do that if he was crying too. Still, she began to mimic him, hugging and stroking his head. Pulling her closer, he realized that they now shared a bond; one that would not easily be broken. Pulling away, he softly brought his thumb to her cheek where he wiped her tears away. "It's okay, you're safe now."

Katar closed her eyes and nodded as he wiped away her tears. She then pointed at his chest with her index finger and looked into his eyes, as if she were saying, "You're safe now, too..."

Smiling, Luke ruffled her hair and hugged her again. It was like he had a new sister. Katar would never replace Emily, but the girl had found a place in his heart. Returning to his bed, he looked over at Katar. "I'm going back to sleep now, okay? I'm really tired." He began shuffling under the covers for a few seconds, then sighed softly. "Unless... You want me to stay up with you? I could do that too, if you like." He offered a small smile.

Katar shook her head. She wasn't tired anymore. He, at least, could get some rest. She pointed at the ceiling, signaling that she was going to the roof for a while. With that, she left the room.

Understanding, Luke nodded and turned under his covers, falling fast asleep. He would dream of Emily for the rest of the night, though this time they were pleasant dreams. Smiling in his slumber, he slept soundly. Maybe there was comfort in the days to come. He couldn't be sure, but he did know one thing: No matter what, there was someone he could rely on.

Katar perched on the edge of the building, looking down on the city below her. The night was still. She let the stillness slow her heartbeat, and clear her mind. She sat like this for hours. Finally, when the sun began to rise, she retreated into the building. Back in their room, Katar busied herself with looking for something to eat. She dug through the drawers and the cabinets she found. Eventually, she managed to uncover a pack of crackers and began to separate them so Luke could eat some when he woke up.

"Emily..."

Morning came. Though the curtains were closed and no light shone through, Luke had always been somewhat of a human clock. He often found himself waking up at exactly six o'clock, much to his displeasure. So, when the day struck six, he was wide awake. Looking around him, he noticed Katar back in the room, and a small pile of crackers on the table. She seemed to be munching on some. Getting up, he walked over and took a few in his hand. "Morning." He shoved a cracker in his mouth before ruffling her hair. It seemed to be a common habit for him, only because he would always do the same with his little sister. Plopping down next to the girl, he continued to snack.

Katar squeezed her eyes shut and smiled when Luke ruffled her hair. She nibbled on her crackers, as it was an instinct for her to eat food slowly when she had any. She never knew when she might have more again. When she was done with her crackers, she stretched and stood up. What to do today........

When he finished his own crackers, Luke got up and walked to the window. Looking outside, he stared at the place where his house once stood. Sighing softly, he moved away and turned around to look at Katar. "Any ideas of what we could do today? I'd rather not have to run again." He chuckled a little, making sure she knew it was a joke.

Katar nodded in agreement. They couldn't stay. They might be found. They'd have to find another hideout. She began thinking quietly for a while, occasionally looking out the window to map out a route to a new location.

As Katar looked out the window, Luke recalled him using his powers the day before. It had certainly surprised him, and by her reaction, it surprised Katar as well. It was like he could control magic. Even the girl herself seemed to possess some ability, using strength and speed along with her natural cunning. "Katar... Do you know anything about what happened yesterday? You know, like when I pushed that man back?"
