Katarine Ryiah is an ancient Jedi Master, investigator, and survivor whose life has been shaped by loss, resilience, and an unusual vulnerability to the dark side of the Force. Born on Ansion in 200 BBY, she was abducted as an infant by the Dark Jedi Lady Sinistra and subjected to years of experimentation that left her mutation dangerously sensitive to dark-side energy. Rescued by the Jedi and raised within the Order, Katarine eventually became a gifted investigator, spending much of her career undercover in the criminal underworld while training several generations of Padawans. Her long life has been marked by complicated attachments, devastating personal losses, and periods of profound failure, including the death of her former student Mist Mayweather and Katarine's subsequent decision to imprison herself in carbonite as penance. Awakened centuries later in 900 ABY, she entered a galaxy where everything she once knew was gone and was forced to rebuild her identity from the ground up. Despite carrying enormous guilt, lingering cravings for the dark-side exposure that once numbed her pain, and the weight of a life spanning centuries, Katarine continues to serve the Jedi, investigate threats, teach new students, and search for a place where she truly belongs.

Chapter I: The Dark Prophecy

Chapter One : The Dark Prophecy

Katarine Ryiah was born in 200 BBY in the Aviprine region of Ansion, only minutes apart from her twin brother, Daxium. Their parents, Troine and Anastasia Ryiah, were humble tweare farmers who lived a quiet and uncomplicated life. They had little in the way of wealth or status, but they adored their children, and for the first six months of Katarine's life, the twins knew nothing beyond the warmth and safety of their small farming village.

That life ended in blood.

One night, Lady Sinistra, a Dark Jedi obsessed with an ancient prophecy, descended upon the village. Believing the Ryiah twins could somehow play a role in the destiny she envisioned, Sinistra murdered Troine and Anastasia and stole their infant children away. Katarine and Daxium were taken far from Ansion to the frozen world of Carlac, where Sinistra had established herself within a dark, gothic fortress hidden among the snowy mountains.

The twins were not the only children imprisoned there. Sinistra had collected youths from across the galaxy, studying them and subjecting them to experiments in hopes of awakening unusual mutations and abilities. She intended to shape those who survived into weapons, creating an army she believed would one day help her fulfill the ancient prophecy.

Katarine spent the first five years of her childhood within the walls of that fortress. She and Daxium were exposed to cruelty, experimentation, and relentless instruction in the dark side of the Force. Daxium showed promise, but Katarine never possessed the affinity for darkness that Sinistra desired. No matter how often she was frightened, punished, or pushed toward hatred, something within her resisted.

When Sinistra's experiments finally succeeded in awakening Katarine's mutation, that resistance became something far more literal. Rather than strengthening Katarine's connection to the dark side, the mutation made her extraordinarily vulnerable to it. Exposure to concentrated dark-side energy weakened her physically, leaving her dizzy, disoriented, and ill, as though the darkness itself had become kryptonite to her body.

To Lady Sinistra, Katarine had become a failed experiment.

With no place for weakness in the future she envisioned, Sinistra prepared to dispose of the child. Before she could do so, however, the hidden fortress on Carlac was discovered by the Jedi Order. The Jedi assaulted the stronghold and liberated the surviving children.

After five years of captivity, experimentation, and cruelty, Katarine Ryiah was finally free.

Chapter II: Finding Her Place

In 195 BBY, five-year-old Katarine Ryiah was formally accepted into the Jedi Order. Her unusual mutation, one that made her physically vulnerable to the dark side, was a source of concern among the Jedi, but they hoped that proper training would help her understand and control it. Katarine was sent to a Jedi enclave on Naboo, where she eagerly embraced a life surrounded by the light side of the Force. After years of darkness and captivity, the enclave became a place of safety, structure, and belonging.

Katarine trained diligently and proved herself a capable youngling, eventually completing traditional milestones such as the Gathering alongside the other students of the enclave. In time, she was chosen as a Padawan by Jedi Master Jessari Tanelorn, a S'kytri woman renowned for her skill with a lightsaber and steadfast devotion to the guardian path. Under Jessari's guidance, Katarine continued to grow, and when her Master later had two children of her own, Katarine came to regard them almost as younger siblings.

Despite her progress, Katarine's mutation remained a serious limitation. Direct exposure to powerful dark-side energy could leave her weak, dizzy, and unable to function. Recognizing this, Jessari began taking Katarine on assignments that played to her strengths rather than forcing her into situations she was not yet prepared to face. Together they worked alongside law enforcement, investigated criminal syndicates, and traveled through the galactic underworld.

It was there that Katarine discovered an unexpected talent. She proved remarkably gifted at investigation, observant, persistent, and skilled at uncovering connections others overlooked. Though she struggled to see herself as a proper Jedi because she could not easily stand on the front lines against the dark side, she was becoming valuable to the Order in an entirely different way.

That insecurity deepened when Jessari was eventually called away to confront a dangerous dark-side threat and Katarine was ordered to remain behind. Unable to accompany her Master, Katarine saw the decision as proof of her own failure.

It was Master Spark Vallen, a Jedi remembered as much for her devotion to caf and disastrous piloting as for her wisdom, who helped Katarine understand that there was no single way to serve as a Jedi. Her limitations did not make her lesser, and her strengths could serve the Order just as meaningfully as a lightsaber on the battlefield.

Jessari Tanelorn never returned from the conflict.

With Spark Vallen guiding her through the grief that followed, Katarine completed her remaining training and faced the Jedi Trials. In time, the frightened child who had once been rescued from a dark fortress on Carlac earned the rank of Jedi Knight, not by becoming the Jedi she thought she was supposed to be, but by beginning to understand the Jedi she was capable of becoming.

Katarine now walked the path of a Jedi Sentinel.

Chapter III: Jedi Master & Heartache

Now a fully-fledged Jedi Knight, Katarine Ryiah found her place among the Jedi Investigators, a specialized branch of the Order that operated within the criminal underworld. The work suited her talents perfectly. Katarine spent long stretches of time undercover, infiltrating criminal organizations, assisting local authorities, and uncovering threats that could not always be solved with a lightsaber. She became diligent and highly capable in the field, but the deeper she disappeared into her assignments, the more distant she began to feel from the Jedi Order itself.

Hoping to restore some of that connection, Katarine eventually returned to Coruscant and petitioned the Jedi Council for permission to take a Padawan.

Her first apprentice was Mist Mayweather, a spirited young Corellian with considerable talent and very little respect for authority. Mist was impulsive, stubborn, and quick with a lightsaber, but Katarine saw potential beneath her rebellious nature. She took the girl across the galaxy on missions, teaching her not only how to fight, but how to investigate, observe, and serve the wider needs of the Jedi.

Over time, however, Mist's attachment to Katarine began to concern both her Master and the Council. Mist increasingly regarded Katarine less as a teacher and more as a mother, placing an emotional weight on their bond that Katarine did not know how to carry. When Mist eventually became ready for the Jedi Trials, she refused to take them. Becoming a Knight would mean leaving Katarine's side, and Mist was unwilling to do so.

Katarine continued to train other students while attempting to encourage Mist toward independence. Among them were Zana Manto, the Thisspiasian daughter of revered Jedi Master Mak Manto; Aiden Lothiar, a human fascinated by advanced technology and genetics; and Koga, a Twi'lek woman who also studied under Katarine's guidance. Each eventually completed their training and faced the Trials before Mist, something that only fueled the Corellian's jealousy and rebelliousness.

Eventually, Katarine convinced Mist that remaining a Padawan was no longer protecting their relationship, it was preventing her from becoming the Jedi she was meant to be. Mist finally agreed to face the Trials and excelled, proving that she had been ready for far longer than she was willing to admit.

With several successful apprentices now behind her, the Jedi Council granted Katarine the rank of Jedi Master. Rather than remain close to Mist afterward, Katarine returned to investigative work. The distance was intentional. She hoped that by stepping away, Mist would finally be forced to establish an identity and career of her own as a Jedi Knight.

It was during one of these assignments that Katarine's carefully ordered life changed again.

While interrupting a robbery, she encountered a young pirate named James Terran. Rather than being frightened away by the Jedi who had ruined the crime, James became immediately fascinated with her. He sought Katarine out afterward and surprised her by asking to be trained in the ways of the Jedi.

The request was highly unconventional. James had never followed the traditional path of a Jedi initiate, but his strength in the Force was undeniable. Against convention, Katarine agreed to teach him.

What began as training slowly became something far more personal. James was unlike the students Katarine had known before, and their

relationship gradually crossed the boundaries between Master and student. The two became deeply attached, eventually falling in love and marrying.

For Katarine, who had spent much of her life struggling with belonging, James represented something she had rarely allowed herself to imagine: a family and a life that belonged to her rather than to the Order.

It lasted only one night.

The morning after their wedding, James Terran disappeared without explanation.

He left no answers, no reassurance, and no understanding of why he had gone. After years spent teaching others to let go of unhealthy attachments, Katarine found herself devastated by one of her own. The Jedi Master who had survived Lady Sinistra, loss, isolation, and years within the criminal underworld was left shattered by something far simpler.

Someone she loved had chosen to leave.

The disappearance of James Terran broke something in Katarine Ryiah.

Unable to understand why he had abandoned her so suddenly, Katarine withdrew from the Jedi Order and traveled to Zeltros, where distraction was easy to find and responsibility easier to ignore. For most of her life, Katarine had treated her mutation as something to control, a dangerous weakness that left her vulnerable in the presence of the dark side. On Zeltros, however, she stopped resisting it.

There she encountered Christian Draclau, a powerful Dark Jedi Master whose presence overwhelmed Katarine's unusual sensitivity. Rather than flee from the dizziness and disorientation his darkness caused, Katarine embraced it. The clouded feeling allowed her to numb the pain of James's abandonment, and for the first time she deliberately used her own weakness as an escape and a drug.

Days blurred together as Katarine surrendered herself to the pleasures of Zeltros and to Christian's company. She abandoned her assignments, ignored messages from the Order, and pushed aside the responsibilities she had sworn to uphold as a Jedi Master. For Katarine, Christian was never meant to be anything more than a way to forget. To Christian, however, their relationship became something far more serious.

Katarine's prolonged absence eventually drew the attention of Mist Mayweather.

Concerned for her former Master, Mist began searching for Katarine and eventually tracked her to Zeltros. Her arrival threatened the fragile world Katarine had created for herself. Mist wanted to bring her home, but Christian feared that if Katarine returned to the Jedi, he would lose her forever.

Acting out of jealousy and obsession, Christian murdered Mist.

The loss shattered what was left of Katarine.

Mist had come looking for her because she cared, and Katarine could not escape the knowledge that her own choices had placed her former Padawan in Christian's path. The woman she had once struggled to push toward independence was now dead because Katarine had abandoned her own responsibilities and allowed herself to remain beside a Dark Jedi she knew was dangerous.

Overcome with guilt, Katarine left Zeltros behind.

She traveled alone to Black Mire Prison, a secret underwater facility built to contain some of the most dangerous criminals in the galaxy. There, deep beneath the water and far removed from the Jedi Order she believed she had betrayed, Katarine imposed a sentence upon herself.

She entered a carbon-freezing chamber willingly.

Katarine Ryiah disappeared into frozen stasis, entombed beneath the waters of Black Mire. She did not know when, or whether, she would ever be awakened.

Centuries would pass before Katarine saw the galaxy again.

For her, the long sleep was not an escape.

It was penance.

Chapter V: A New Era

In 900 ABY, a devastating cataclysm struck Naboo and destroyed Black Mire Prison, tearing open the secret underwater facility that had held Katarine Ryiah in carbonite for centuries.

Katarine was recovered from the ruins and transported to Theed Hospital, but awakening was only the beginning of her struggle. Centuries in frozen stasis had ravaged her body. Severe hibernation sickness left her weak, disoriented, and barely able to move. Her muscles had deteriorated so badly that survival itself became uncertain.

For the next three years, Katarine focused on one simple task: learning how to live again.

She relearned how to stand, how to walk, and how to trust a body that no longer felt like her own. By the time she was strong enough to leave the hospital, she faced a realization almost as painful as her recovery.

The galaxy she had known was gone.

Everyone she had loved was dead. The Jedi Order she remembered had changed beyond recognition. Nations had risen and fallen, worlds had transformed, and centuries of history had passed while Katarine remained frozen beneath the waters of Naboo. For the first time in her life, she truly had no home to return to.

Katarine began traveling in search of the Jedi, hoping that somewhere within the unfamiliar galaxy she might find something that still felt recognizable. Her search eventually brought her to Valery Noble, a Jedi Master who understood Katarine's displacement in a way few others could. Valery had once experienced a similar separation from her own time, and she helped Katarine begin adjusting to a galaxy that had moved on without her.

Through Valery, Katarine found a place within the New Jedi Order.

Returning to active duty gave Katarine something she desperately needed: purpose. She resumed the investigative work that had once defined her career and began hunting the dangerous prisoners who had escaped Black Mire during its destruction. Many of them had disappeared into the criminal underworld, and Katarine threw herself wholeheartedly into tracking them down.

The work gave her focus, but it could not erase everything she had carried out of the past.

Her time with Christian Draclau had left behind more than guilt. Katarine continued to experience cravings for the dark-side exposure she had once used to numb herself. Even centuries later, she remembered the dizziness, the clouded thoughts, and the temporary relief that surrendering to her mutation had provided. She resisted those urges, burying them beneath duty and constant work.

Then the galaxy changed again.

When the Galactic Empire attacked the Core and the Galactic Alliance collapsed, Katarine fled Coruscant alongside many other Jedi. Valery Noble, once Grandmaster of the New Jedi Order and one of Katarine's strongest connections to her new life, was nowhere to be found.

In the upheaval that followed, many survivors of the New Jedi Order joined the High Republic, Katarine among them.

Once again serving beneath a new Jedi Council, Katarine returned to the only life she truly understood. She continued working undercover, investigating threats and navigating the galactic underworld while slowly attempting to build relationships with the Jedi of this unfamiliar age.

Eventually, she took another step toward rebuilding the part of herself she had lost.

On Chalacta, Katarine established a school and once more began training students. Teaching gave her a sense of belonging she had not experienced since her first life, and for a time it seemed possible that Katarine might finally build something lasting in the future.

Yet beneath all of that progress remained a problem she could not outrun.

The cravings had never disappeared.

No matter how much she worked, taught, or surrounded herself with the light, some part of Katarine still remembered what it felt like to surrender to the darkness and let it take the pain away.

With each passing year, resisting that temptation became a little harder.

Valery Noble​

The former grandmaster of the New Jedi Order, and a dear friend of Katarine. Valery helped Kat find her place after stasis and has proved herself a valuable mentor and friend. Kat views the woman as an epitome of Jedi skill and bravery.

Connel Vanagor​

Connel Vanagor is a Jedi whom Katarine Ryiah met during her service to The New Jedi Order. He is an ex-boyfriend and their relationship remains strained and awkward after the breakup. Despite the awkwardness, Connel is one of the few Jedi Katarine feels she truly knows, and he serves as a reminder that she just may have a place in this galaxy after all. His dog Buster is beloved by Katarine and thought of often.

Dean Walker​

A former SIA agent for The Galactic Alliance, Dean is a capable investigator and a former partner on the Black Mire Case. Katarine is attracted to the man, and the two had a brief romantic moment on an assignment. After the Core Worlds fell to the Empire, Dean went underground like most of the SIA. Katarine does not know where he is but she hopes he is safe and that she can see him again someday.

Mikhail Shorn

Mikhail is a darksider whom Katarine had a brief affair with. She is extremely attracted to the man, and deep down she loves him, though his own self-loathing and destructive behavior make him a volatile romantic match. The two parted on good terms, agreeing to see each other again one day.

Aiden Porte
​

Aiden is a wise and helpful Jedi who clings to the light. He is a member of the Jedi Order and proudly serves the Naboo people. He has helped Kat many times during her adventures. She considers him to be a friend and someone she can count on.

Acier Moonbound​

Katarine met Acier on Lothal when the young warrior helped her out of a tight spot. Since meeting him, she has known Acier to travel between dark and light in service to the galaxy. He is a strong and kind young man with a great future ahead of him.

Lily Decoria
​

Lily is a gifted Jedi and a true warrior of the light. Katarine met the woman while on an assignment once, and she seemed nice. Kat has followed Lily's Jedi career with interest and believes there is promising talent there that may change the fate of the galaxy. Despite the positive vibes Katarine would prefer if the woman kept her hands off of Dean Walker.

Jonyna Si​

The Carthar Jedi Master is a skilled duelist and was highly committed to the New Jedi Order. Katarine knows her as a talented cook with the true heart of a rebel.

Enemies & Rivals

Darth Carnifex​

The Dark Lord of the Sith and one of the most evil men in the galaxy, is also the creator of a sire bond with Katarine. After capturing the Jedi Master, Carnifex implanted a Vong biot that makes Katarine dependent on his blood to control her mutation. While Katarine is trying to break the bond, and views Carnifex as the true face of evil, their relationship remains complicated, since he is the one who has helped her control her mutation and free her from the darksides crippling effects on her.

Muad Dib ​

Muad is a blast from Katarine's past whom she believes is responsible for the death of Elion Corsair, a beloved individual from her past. Maud displayed extreme cruelty in the past and hurt a children's orphanage to teach Kat a lesson. He remains a source of anger for the woman.
