HISTORY & PERSONALITY
Born on Iridonia to a mid-tier military family with a long tradition of service in planetary defense forces and, later, Republic-aligned units. His father was a career non-commissioned officer who emphasized discipline, maintenance of gear, and the idea that order is not a luxury but a survival requirement on a world that has historically produced hard people for hard places. His mother handled logistics and procurement for local defense contracts; both parents are still alive and remain on Iridonia. He has one younger sister who stayed planetary and works in civil administration. Relations with the family are distant but not hostile — they respect his service record even if they do not fully understand (or approve of) his eventual break with the High Republic.

Karanos entered High Republic military service in his late teens through a standard officer-track program. He proved competent rather than brilliant: reliable under pressure, meticulous about logistics and unit readiness, and quietly intolerant of political interference in operational decisions. He spent most of his career in border security, anti-piracy task groups, and rapid-response formations along the more unstable edges of High Republic space. He rose to the equivalent of a senior captain / junior commander rank through steady performance rather than patronage.

In his mid-twenties he married a human logistics officer he met while both were stationed on a forward depot world. The marriage lasted six years. It failed for the usual reasons compounded by the demands of the service: long separations, his increasing emotional rigidity, and her eventual decision that she wanted a life with more warmth and less constant readiness for the next crisis. The divorce was clean on paper and quietly corrosive underneath. He still carries a residual distrust of deep personal entanglement; he will work with people for years and remain professionally excellent while keeping them at a careful distance. He has not remarried and shows no interest in doing so.

Approximately eight years ago, while commanding a small garrison and customs detachment on a minor Mid Rim trade station, Karanos's unit intercepted a pirate cartel moving high-value military-grade components. Intelligence indicated the shipment was destined for a Sith-aligned warlord. Republic higher command ordered a pause for diplomatic review of the station's sovereignty status and possible political fallout with a neutral system that claimed the outpost. The pause lasted forty-one hours. In that window the cartel executed a preemptive strike, overran two of his outlying posts, and took civilian hostages. Karanos eventually received authorization to act and cleared the station with significant casualties among his own people and the hostages. In the fighting, he suffered a deep, irregular scar that runs from the right side of his jaw down across his collarbone and onto his upper chest. It itches on occasion, but most of the pain has dulled with age. Unfortunately, as a byproduct of this snafu, Karanos has a knee-jerk resistance to orders that he views as being 'unnecessarily political', especially when it gives their enemy a chance to escape or regroup.

The following months, and the string of disciplinary infractions that followed (culminating in striking an officer) left a stain on his record and ensured the customs outpost would be both his first and last command; only his otherwise sterling record and a long string of recommendation letters kept him from being removed from service entirely; instead he was attached to the Logistics Corps where his 'meticulous and well-organized' mindset could best serve, keeping him far away from the more hot-tempered line officers at the sharp edge of the Republic.

Karanos was present for part of the High Republic's defense of Thyferra during the Sith Order's invasion (the Bacta War). He watched competent units held in reserve or constrained by cascading political and strategic directives while Sith forces pressed hard. The eventual outcome was a clear Republic loss of the world and a significant blow to medical logistics across their sphere. Concurrently, intelligence reports and personal correspondence from family on Iridonia made it clear that the Sith Covenant was steadily increasing pressure and influence in the surrounding sector. Iridonia itself was not yet under direct assault, but the pattern of encroachment, proxy activity, and lawlessness spreading outward was unmistakable.

The combination crystallized everything he had already come to believe. The Republic was willing to fight, but only within the limits of its political self-image. It would not act with the speed or ruthlessness required to keep chaos from spreading to places like his homeworld. When the United Protectorate of Sovereign Systems began making concrete moves in the wider region (including activity that touched the approaches near Iridonia and neighboring systems), Karanos made his decision.

He formally retired from High Republic service under the cover of accumulated leave and medical review related to old injuries. Quietly, he contacted a small circle of former subordinates and peers who shared his assessment — men and women who had also grown tired of fighting with one hand tied. Together they returned to the Iridonia sector and began organizing local and neighboring resistance networks under the broader umbrella of Protectorate support. Their stated purpose is straightforward: prevent the further spread of lawlessness, Sith influence, and the kind of institutional paralysis that had already cost them too much. Karanos does not frame this as rebellion against the Republic so much as the application of a more effective instrument to the same problem the Republic claims to care about.
