OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Kamar Taj
  • Classification: Urban Center
  • Location: Alaris Prime
  • Affiliation: Silver Jedi Concord, Witches of Dathomir (Mistwalker Clan)
  • Population: Moderate
  • Demographics:
  • Wealth: Low. The Mistwalker Clan lives according to traditional Dathomirian custom, conducting themselves as subsistence farmers and fishermen while maintaining their shamanistic rituals, animism, and ancestor worship. They eschew technology or most modern conveniences and reject the accumulation of wealth as the driving force of society, instead operating as a shared commune. Bartering remains the dominant means of economy, though Galactic Credits are not unheard of as their proximity to Kashyyyk has introduced the Mistwalkers to tourism -- something they had not experienced on Talay.
  • Stability: High. The Mistwalkers are led by the Shaol'maka, who is vested with both religious authority and political power to direct the members of the commune. For both religious and secular members of the Mistwalker Clan, this form of governance is central to their cultural identity and, thus, for so long as the Shaol'maka is there to guide them and interpret for the spirits, the Mistwalkers have a recognizable connection and a functional society to latch onto. Tribal disputes are handled among the families in large part, with the Shaol'maka addressing any dispute that cannot be mediated otherwise. Any major crimes or external diplomatic relations are handled by the Wookiees, as Alaris Prime falls under the jurisdiction of Kashyyyk.
  • Freedom & Oppression: The Dathomirians of the Mistwalker Clan practice their religion openly and without prejudice or imposition by the Silver Jedi. Use of the Dark Side may draw the attention of the Jedi, but it also draws the attention of the clan elders for the same reasons. Reliance by a witch on either the Fanged God (Dark Side) or Winged Goddess (Light) alone is discouraged, with balance and harmony of the spirit realm being the focus of this Grey Force Cult, enabling them to coexist peacefully within the greater Jedi community surrounding them.
  • Description: A city founded on temporary shelters and modular buildings, over the past several decades this once shanty-town, propped up beside the ruins of a forgotten Jedi Temple, has become a thriving commune of Dathomirian expats. More diverse than any time in their storied history, today the Mistwalker village features both Nightsister and Jedi, Dathomirian and Wookiee. Signs and menus are often presented in Paecian, Basic, and Shyriiwook, a visual testament to the blending of both Allyan and Concord cultures.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • The Altar of Mists. The heart of the settlement, built from the ruins of a forgotten Jedi Temple dating back to before the High Republic era. Reconstructed, today the temple honors both the Jedi and the Daighters of Allya -- bringing new attention to the fact that Allya had been a Jedi Knight herself. The temple serves as both the seat of the moon's governance and the Mistwalker religion, as the Shaol'ma'ka speaks for both. Thus, the temple is the governor's palace for the forest moon.
  • The Temple Steps. The approach to the temple from the ground is easily missed, with the ancient stone steps well covered by moss and vegetation. Winding up to the first gate, as one passed through the entry it is as though the world suddenly opens up. And there, before them, is a temple they had no idea they'd been passing by.
  • Public Houses. Similar to cantinas, these serve as both hostels and dining establishments, but take on a more communal aspect due to the Mistwalker cultural practice of the tira -- that is, the shared preparation and break fast of the community or extended family.
  • Zhaboka Arena: Similar in construction to the Nightbrother Arena on Dathomir, this was an open air, gladiatorial amphitheater where traditional K'thri martial arts were practiced alongside cultural dances and rituals important to the Mistwalker's ancestor worship.
  • The Alaris River. The temple complex and village are bordered to one side by a river flowing down from the mountains, and which supplies the principle means of subsistence for the fishermen of the Mistwalker Clan.
SECURITY
Low
. There is little in the way of technology and the Dathomirians provide for their own home defense using energy bows and zhaboka. There is a detachment of Antarian Rangers, but only a handful and these are dedicated to Aerospace Traffic Control rather than guard duty or planetary defense. There are a few of Jedi Architect Droids that can provide physical security if required, but are intended for use in maintaining and repairing the temple ruins that comprise the lynchpin of the commune's facilities and shelter.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The Mistwalkers arrived on Alaris Prime in 860 ABY, receiving asylum from the Silver Jedi Concord after the Dathomirian expats had fled their village on Talay in the wake of a planetary invasion. Initially, they were provided temporary shelters and modular housing, with their refugee camp established at the base of a forgotten Jedi Temple that had been left in ruin and disuse since before the Clone Wars. A decade later, the Mistwalkers had established a more permanent community -- one that focused itself on restoring the Jedi Temple as well as their own culture and society. Fields were tilled to create farmland, a fishery and docks were constructed on the Alaris River, and public houses were organized to provide food and a sense of community as the Mistwalkers turned their asylum into a home.

Today, Kamar Taj is everything that the Mistwalkers left behind on Talay and more. They practice their religion without fear or fetter. They practice their native customs and rituals. And they share their culture with those visiting from Kashyyyk or the Concord, which has re-connected these Nightsisters with the Jedi roots of the All-Mother. By galactic standards, it is a poor village. There is little to no technology present here. But it remains a tightly-knit coven of Dathomirians, even as they learn to adapt to their Wookiee hosts or their Concord friends.
