Kailani Orsa
Character
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Exceptionally smooth skin which is grayish white on her front side from her neck down her chest and stomach, and the underside of her tail/flukes, being slate gray otherwise and lacking hair of any kind. Her thick neck supports an elongated head with a beak-like rostrum forming her mouth, large eyes on the sides of her head, and an elongated forehead accounting for the rest of her 'face'. She has a blowhole on the top of her head, through which she breaths, and a dorsal crest and pair of tentacles protruding just behind. A larger dorsal fin extends from the middle of her upper back, and her rather large tail extends from her rear end, tapering off before flattening into a pair of flukes at the end. Otherwise, her appearance is similar to a human female. For clothing, she usually opts for being comfortable, wearing loose-fitting robes or a dress, which are custom-tailored to accommodate her tail. Around her neck, she usually wears a necklace adorned with round turquoise sea shells.

STRENGTHS
+ Bookworm:
Kailani has been described by her friends as an information sponge, or perhaps even a black hole. She spends a lot of her free time studying anything she can get her hands on, from holodiscs to plain old book chips, almost no matter the subject. This has taught her a lot about the rest of the galaxy, and its people. She's even starting to learn how to translate text in some of the more common languages.
+ Mechanically Gifted:
An early priority in Kailani's quest for knowledge was to learn how to repair and even build ships, figuring it was a way she could earn enough credits to live on, and perhaps see some interesting parts of the galaxy as a bonus. Turned out she had a bit of a natural talent for it and has learned a lot while working on and studying ships and other galactic technology over the past five years or so.
+ Passionate Leader:
She may have only been a shipyard foreman rather than something glamorous like a general or an admiral, but anyone who worked under her would tell you that she commanded the respect of everyone on the team. She always led by example and worked just as hard as everyone else. She believes anything worth doing is worth doing well and truly cares about every member of the team.
WEAKNESSES
- Combat Novice:
As a child, Kailani saw little point in learning to fight. She was more interested in going on her exploration quests. In hindsight, she realizes this was rather short-sighted and has begun to study both armed and unarmed combat of various forms. However, she still has no real combat experience and her efforts to study and practice on her own are unlikely to be of much help in a real fight against a more experienced opponent.
- Curious to a Fault:
Having lived most of her life isolated from the rest of the galaxy, the fact that it's now open for her to explore may be a dream come true for her, but she is naïve to the dangers that lurk around every corner. Sooner or later, she is going to learn something she shouldn't know, or wander into a place that is highly dangerous. Either way, she's inevitably headed for trouble.
- Tunnel Vision:
Whether it's her passion for her work or study, often she can get so focused on the task at hand that the rest of the world falls away as she gets lost in the task at hand, forgetting about time and other obligations. This has gotten her into trouble on occasion, but you can't argue with results, and is it really possible to know too much?
- Sensitive Hearing:
Hearing acute enough to allow for the use of echolocation comes along with the drawback of being vulnerable to very loud sounds. Depending on the volume and frequency, such sounds can cause anywhere from an intense headache, to permanent hearing loss. This also brings an obvious susceptibility to sonic weapons.
HISTORY
Kailani's ancestors were among the scarce few uninfected Dolphinarians that were shipped off world during the terrible plague that wiped out most of the species. A small group ended up residing on the mostly aquatic planet of Pria and would remain there in peace and relative isolation for generations. Kailani spent much of her early life listening to stories from the elders about the days when they lived on Mon Cala, how wonderful it was, and how much they lost because of the plague that nearly caused their extinction. After hearing all of their tales, a deep curiosity grew inside her about what lay beyond the oceans of this world that her ancestors had called home for generations. She would often be found on the surface, gazing up at the sky and wondering what secrets each star held hidden in the blackness of space.
With no surviving ships, she couldn't leave the planet, so the next best thing for her was to explore Pria. She spent years wandering the oceans and seeing what she could discover. One such discovery was that there was still some land on the planet, it just wasn't in the same spot that her ancestors had noted generations ago. For a time, she busied herself with mapping the area within a few days swimming from home, and cataloging the various features such as underwater caves, as well as the flora and fauna. One night however, while watching the sky, she noticed a strange light in the sky. The light streaked across the sky toward the only nearby landmass she knew of. She promptly swam over to investigate and discovered that the strange light was a ship. It was piloted by a Twi'lek male and appeared to be damaged.
Kailani introduced herself and offered to help the Twi'lek in any way she could, even if she was unsure what help she could offer. He initially declined, but when she returned the next day and spent hours watching him work on his ship, with rapt curiosity, he finally relented. "Fine, if you're not going to leave me alone, I may as well put you to work." So, she began to help the Twi'lek repair his ship, with the man instructing her every step of the way. She may not have had a clue what she was doing at first, but she was good at following directions, so it mostly worked out fine. Desperately wishing to see the galaxy, Kailani asked her elders if she could go with the off-worlder. They refused, saying that she was too young to be on her own. Ultimately though, she couldn't resist the temptation. When the ship was repaired, she asked the Twi'lek if he would take her with him. He normally was wary of taking on passengers of which he barely knew, but she had proven to be helpful, so he reluctantly agreed.
Kailani traveled with the Twi'lek for about a year after that. From him, she began to learn the common maintenance repairs required to keep a ship running, as well as a little about how to fly one. She began to realize though that there was only so much she could learn from him, and during a stop on Corellia, she decided to go her own way. She began to study starships and galactic technology in general, ultimately finding work in the shipyards. It was not easy work, but her intelligence, attention to detail, and diligence did not go unnoticed. She also earned respect from her fellow workers when even after being promoted, she continued to get her hands dirty helping with the work, rather than just supervising from afar.
Eventually, she earned enough credits and know-how to buy a used light freighter ship and fix it up with the help of some of her friends from work. Finally, Kailani had her own means of galactic transportation and could go anywhere she desired. She stayed in Corellia for a while longer to save up some credits before finally leaving to travel the galaxy. Her first stop was one she had planned for years, Mon Cala, wishing to see her ancestral home world and learn more about herself and her own kind from what few ruins and records remain. After that she traveled much more on a whim, going anywhere that either held remarkable natural beauty, or equally remarkable libraries of knowledge that she could indulge in. In this quest through the galaxy, she is also trying to figure out how she fits in the infinite puzzle of the universe.
