Funny how you don't think much about who you are or where you came from until somebody tries to take that all away from you.
Kade was just another Kol-Rekali bastard. Mom said she met Rach at a clan get-together. He was charming and handsome. She impressed him with her marskwomanship in the clan contest. The usual story.
Rach died shortly after Kade was born. Tried to stop the Death Watch from nuking the capital of Mandalore. Some big damn hero. Rach probably never knew Kade existed.
Fine by Kade. He grew up in Clan Shardrock on Dathomir. His mom always told him about how brave his father had been. How selfless, to die for the Mando'ade like that.
Sure.
Other people had other stories. Got a few uncles drunk enough around the fire and they'd told him all about the great Rach Kol-Rekali. How he probably had a dozen other bastards just like Kade scattered from Dathomir to the Outer Rim.
Kade came to resent him. Blamed him for his failures. Blamed him for not being there for the small moments, and the big ones. First kill in the hunt. First suit of beskar. First lightsaber.
Then Ra Vizsla came, made himself Mandalore, and started wiping out the ones who set off the supervolcano on Mandalore. Sure, thought Kade, made sense. So he did nothing. What did Clan Shardrock have to do with all that? Best let the Death Watch and those Monroes sort it out.
Then Ra decreed that all Mandalorian force users were to be purged from the planet of Mandalore. And still, Kade did nothing. He felt guilty when relatives fled to Dathomir to escape the purge, or arrived distraught, cut from the Force. But he was just one man. What would he do against an empire?
Then they came for Dathomir.
And Kade could not stop them.
