BIOGRAPHY:

Jonn zok Jievo was born into a darkening era for his people. Kubindi, isolated during the 400-Year Darkness, had finally recovered from the horrific devastation unleashed upon the planet during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion... but its newfound safety and prosperity would not last. Jonn grew up surrounded by whispers of war between the Kubaz hives, a coming conflict fueled by old hatreds and greed for his world's renewed resources. He himself was not a political being, and stayed out of the rallies that stirred up so many of his hive's other inhabitants. Jonn wanted a simple life. More comfortable with machines than with people, and eager to get out and see the galaxy, he studied starship repair at a prominent Kubindi trade school. Soon he had become an adept starship mechanic.

When civil war finally did break out on his homeworld, hive turning against hive, Jonn simply left. He had no desire to see his people killing each other - or what would happen when the Sovereignty, the interplanetary government holding sway in the region at the time, would do when it inevitably took control of the planet. Invited in by Covluz Hive to bring an end to the conflict, they obliterated the forces of hives that resisted them, such as Hive Kadsac - Jonn's own hive. But the mechanic felt little loyalty to the place he'd grown up. He drifted while the war raged, working his way across the Outer Rim, visiting dozens of different worlds. He seldom set down roots anywhere for long, sticking with tramp freighters and providing them on-the-go maintenance so he could keep moving.

When the Sovereignty collapsed, Jonn came home. Despite all the wonders he'd seen, he had found that he missed Kubindi, and he was sure that he could make a comfortable life for himself helping to pick up the pieces after the civil war. For a while, he did just that. Business was good, and so was life. But the Hive Wars had only been a tiny prelude to the disaster to come, a disaster even worse than the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. In the furthest depths of the Galactic Southeast, a monstrous threat was rising: the Bryn'adul, a genocidal alien regime of incredible power and brutality. The Bryn rapidly expanded across Wild Space and the Outer Rim, conquering a vast swath of territory - and ravaging every world they took, utterly annihilating its native life in their "purity" crusade.

It wasn't long before they targeted Kubindi. With a massed orbital bombardment the Bryn'adul glassed the planet's surface, cooking most of the inhabitants of the subterranean hives alive - and deploying their insectoid Kadesh drones to finish off any survivors. The Deep Space Coalition, an organization dedicated to resisting Bryn'adul expansion, managed to save a small number of Kubaz... but it was nothing compared to the billions who perished. Somehow, Jonn managed to be one of the lucky ones. The image of his homeworld burning beyond the escape shuttle's viewport would be seared into his mind forever. He knew that he was one of the last of the Kubaz now, for only the few that that had made it to the evacuation ships and the small Kubazian diaspora had survived.

Jonn and a few other survivors drifted for a while, looking for a place they could settle down and consolidate what was left of their people. They eventually heard rumors of Mek-Sha, the semi-abandoned fueling station turned shadowport on the Parlemian Trade Route. Many refugees had ended up there, hiding from the Bryn'adul's ongoing genocides, and it seemed as good a place as any. Jonn soon arrived on the station. He found it a vibrant and chaotic place, stuffed to the gutters with refugees of countless near-extinct species. The gifted mechanic immediately made himself useful, working hard to keep the station running in spite of its tremendous age and the fact that it was well over capacity. His good works and ability to organize people saw him become well-known.

When the Bryn'adul were finally broken at Danuta and their grim empire collapsed, Mek-Sha began seeing a new kind of traffic: opportunists of all stripes, eager to make their mark on the region now known as the Scar Worlds. On the one hand, these newcomers brought in badly needed credits and supplies. On the other, they brought crime, exploitation, and even worse overcrowding. By this time, Jonn had become known as "Junker Jonn", in imitation of one of Mek-Sha's founders. He led a substantial local crew of scavengers, mechanics, and engineers, and exerted considerable influence on the station. His goal became a simple one: to keep Mek-Sha running as a haven for his people and others like them. If he had to stoop to illegal activity to do it, well, so be it.

TRAITS:

[+]Skilled Mechanic: Jonn went to a good school for starship mechanics, and in the years that followed, he worked on just about everything: bulk freighters, warships, space stations. His experience transferred well to other things, like droids and speeders. He is an expert at fixing whatever needs repairs.

[+]Canny Scavenger: Jonn has a good eye for parts. For most of his adult life he's had to make do with whatever is available on the galactic fringe, and he's gotten skilled at salvaging high-quality scrap and turning it into useful or profitable items. Wrecks and broken equipment are like Life Day presents to him.

[+]Local Leader: Though more at home with machines than with people, Jonn has risen to the challenge of leading a crew and influencing a community. He is well respected by those he works with, and has a powerful presence on Mek-Sha simply through the usefulness of his work and his quiet aura of command.

[-]Traumatized:
Jonn watched his homeworld die up close, and he has never forgotten that experience. The horrors of the genocide at Kubindi often keep him awake at night, leaving him jumpy and exhausted. He drinks to cope, an escalating problem that he is doing his best to keep under wraps for as long as he can.

[-]Noncombatant:
Jonn is good at a lot of things, but fighting isn't one of them. He has never hit someone in anger, let alone gotten into a fight, and his only knowledge of blasters, vibroblades, and slugthrowers relates to how to fix them. In the choice between fight or flight, he will always pick flight.

[-]Callous: As one of the last Kubaz, Jonn feels responsible for keeping his people alive. He can justify a lot of things in the name of preserving his species, and that can lead him into some poor and morally dubious decisions. He is slow to trust, and more than willing to lie, cheat, and steal if he thinks it necessary.
